Hey In. Go at your own pace. It is a process, and it sounds like you have a lot that you don't want to throw away. Keep your mind open and your education going! I wish you the best.

For non theists: Stages of evolution, can we develop wings?
by cyberjesus inif the evolution of life is defined by adapting to a need and life develops as it is needed.
what if decide to live in trees and jumping from them everytime.
does it mean that we could eventually develop wings?

ATJ: I mean, evolution has happened naturally without conscious thought. We didnt need to know or understand it and we got now where we are. But now we understand that it happens due to adaptation. So in a way we could put ourselves in an environment where we can control evolution to whatever we want to.
Thats an interesting theory. I am positive that there isn't enough data to do more then speculate wildly on that question
(i personally would like to surgically modify womans vaginas and make them deeper and wider, maybe then evolution will take of the rest)
LOL! Wouldn't you rather take an herbal remedy from a whistling libido provider?

Do Most Pedophiles Use Religion as Their Cover?
by cameo-d inas children, we were always taught not to accept candy from strangers and not to ride with strangers.
however, it seems that the danger most always comes, not from a stranger, but from someone the child knows.. one day we headed to the school bus stop knowing we were 'almost' late.
we waited and waited.

I think it behooves all religions to pay attention to how their insular structure can be manipulated by predators where children are concerned.
I see no issue whatsoever for a requirement of a criminal background check for any religion's leaders that would have access to children alone.
Regardless of where one stands on the theist/atheist debate, we know that religion isn't going away. It would be good for all religions to not be naive to the fact that religions offer unique opportunities to exploit children, and do their best to protect them.
As to most pedophiles using religion? Many do. Most though? I am not sure.

JW Science Quote (1-29)
by TD inif you've been exposed to american entertainment at all during the last forty years, it would be difficult to be unfamiliar with the sci-fi character, "mr.
spock.
" spock was a character in the series, star trek, the son of a "vulcan" father and a human mother.

Great post TD. Another black eye from the one man writing dept that was Fred Franz.... (for the most part.)
To me, this illustrates a general behaviorial pattern that the borg continues to display. Instead of integrity to facts, or quoting within the meaning and context of a source material, the Governing Body usually will always (yes, an absolute, always) fram an article and its concepts in a way that is favorable to them.
Clearly, they don't care that about things like claiming the heart could somehow influence thoughts and emotions. They just allow time to distance themselves from their embarrassing lack of research, knowledge, and care.
All literature produced by the GB is FUBU. (For Us By Us). This is why new converts are spoonfed selected points of dogma until baptism, at which point, the rest of the embarrassing bullshit is given to them.
They don't really care about getting it right. They just care about getting it to their flock, regardless of how (in)correct it is.

Why Jehovah's Witnesses Are Discouraged From Using the Internet
by AllTimeJeff inat a recent series of circuit assemblies, the governing body put out warnings on what in their view is the latest danger from satan, designed to break the faith of jehovah's witnesses everywhere.. facebook.. yes, thats right, apparantly, the gb is concerned because a lot of people are having "facebook sex".
they are meeting old friends who aren't jehovah's witnesses and getting it on with whomever would willingly sleep with them.
evidentally, the gb would like their flock to believe that when jw's get on facebook and other social networking sites, fornication happens.. now, this is news.

Giving Attention to the Needs of the Circuit at Assemblies. While CO's can incorporate local needs after consultation with the DO, the Society will generally put in an outline certain matters they want discussed.
Also, social networking has been mentioned at all elder's meetings during the week of the CO's visit.
Is it in print? Not yet. But it is being taught.

Well, there are other crawling creatures who live in trees and their evolution demands better crawling equipment. I guess we will have to wait and see if A) We live in trees and B) What will be the best way to get up there.
Lets not underestimate Apple inventing the iSuit, which should have a built in iPhone, iPad, and the iRocket pack for easy access to our new tree home.
Can we actually create planned evolution since we can now understand it and therefore influence it?
Are you talking about natural evolution or gene manipulation? I guess anything is possible in a couple hundred years.

Jehovah's Witnesses and Calvinistic Predestination
by AllTimeJeff inthis is a complex question, and i just want to get a discussion started on the message of jehovah's witnesses and how it relates to their adventist roots, and esp calvinism.. bear with me, i will try to be concise.. we all know that while jehovah's witnesses like to deny adventist roots, that it is clear that according to them, the man jesus selected to get the whole thing started, c t russell, was heavily influenced by adventist ideas, esp the (adventist) idea that has really never left them; the idea that somehow, a time date or period can be inferred from the bible if you read certain scriptures through an adventist lens.
(thus, the 2520 years, 7 gentile times, etc.).
so while this is relatively well known, there is a concept that jehovah's witnesses teach against, yet practice.

Hey XJW4EVR
Thank you for sharing your beliefs. As a caveat, I didn't mean to over simplify Calvinistic dogma, or any related dogma. As I am sure you got, my main point was in highlighting a JW belief that while they deny, seem to practice and believe in. To highlight Calvinism was merely to draw on that general belief system as a comparison piece.
I happily allow that I did a poor job in explaining the Calvinist belief system, and I apologize if I got it wrong.
I am curious however, as I now know you to be Calvin, if you agree with my opinion as to JW beliefs regarding their own seeming version of predestination. (which was my main point)
Thanks!

Before It's Too Late ...
by The Berean inwhile i dont usually submit long-winded posts ... this one might well be worth it for those who do not fully realize the emotional and financial hazard involved in living as though the world, as we know it, is about to end:.
first let me say, bob and mary, i will call them, are a decent and caring couple who have been married forty or so years.
they were both raised as jehovahs witnesses and have consistently lived their faith.

Even elders are told not to do shepherding calls on apostates. They can visit convicted pedophiles, they can visit serial adulterers if they want. But apostates are off limits. They are dead to the GB, because they are the ones that expose them.
All this is really is an attempt at damage control against bad publicity. They don't give a rats ass about anyones "spirituality", esp apostates.

Commentary on the Letter of James
by lepermessiah inzoiks inspired this thread when he mentioned this book elsewhere.. i have read other threads on this forum about it, but i always enjoy the fresh insight on here.. commentary on the letter of james was always my favorite book from wtbs, partly because i love the book of james, but also because it was one of the books that dealt with more practical christian living than constant wt doctrine.. i mentioned to a number of people that i loved that book, and got a few comments of "well, you know that book was written by an apostate.".
it didnt take me long to do a little math - that book came out i believe in 1979/1980, right around the time of the great purge.
how could someone write such an excellent book and then be branded an apostate just a few months later???.
