D.O. really just served COs & GBs..makes sense to put a few of them at "desk" jobs anyway. Why have travel costs & setting up housing costs for them? COs can give the talks for assemblies as they are just as good 'parrots' for GB.
In U.S. about 686 COs (apprx. 20 congs per circuit,,so about a few dozen DOs to displace?

EVIDENCE CONVENTION-ATTENDANCES ARE IN DECLINE?
by steve2 inthere are many threads on this forum about the stultifying tedium of the conventions.
memories of one convention merge with every other convention over the years with few sticking out as high points.. in recent years, there have been lots of anecdotal reports (primarily from western countries) of an astonishingly low number of baptismal candidates at these conventions, and in particular district conventions - especially compared to the higher numbers who presented for baptisms in earlier decades.
is this decline also reflected in general attendances at the conventions?.

** wasn't it just a couple years ago or so, that congregation book studies, often just blocks away, were dropped altogether, not temporarialy, due to 'gas costs'????? ***** (tho many suspect there was more reason than that).
Seems since many to most JWs would rather go to a convention local, short distance. The cost of motels, gas and bother of box lunches, especially when coming from a distance would be certainly a bother. It's such rush trip for many. Seems getting to know others rushing in and out, no convenience to meeting other individuals much anyway. Years ago, attenders worked together in cafeteria/refreshment setups, etc. met other JWs more conveniently. Made things a bit more fun for older kids and teenagers too (of course, we kids were desperate to meet kids, (being deprived of school friends).. Now, the WTS makes many to go much further to conventions, and they don't care the about gas & motel costs??? Such a contradictory organization.
Seems WTS would suspect to receive more contibutions for them,, if the rank & file don't have to put so much out for long distance spin, spin trips.
I know it gives JWs excitement to see thousands of other JWs at one time. But the Headquarters could put up a movie/slide show of "all the brothers send their greetings and love to you from" from this and that state,,show short clips, moving or still, from several states/countries. I think most people would get a charge out of that for a few minutes or so. And that would be sufficient.

International Conventions for 2014 - Landover, MD - What is an International Convention?
by insearchoftruth inhave been out of touch for a while, i see that there is an 'international' convention this year in landover, md (fed ex field) and there are no english conventions in either richmond or hampton, va. what is an 'international convention', is it merely a consolidation of all the other conventions meant to whip up some fervor amongst the masses?.

Probably brings in the "cash" for WTS. Or, they'll discontinue them.

I think my D.O. Is a closet apostate. References Stanford Prison Study and hints he sometimes disagrees with the Branch
by kneehighmiah ini find it odd that the district overseer today made.
1. zero yes 0 references to the fds in any of his talks.. 2.he also told elders that the brothers worship god and not them.so therefore the elders have no authority to order the friends around.. 3. he also talked about the stanford prison study and said that people who receive authority over others often abuse it.
4. he mentioned that when he disagrees with the branch (aka the fds) he's learned to just do what they say.

"For those visiting what Im about to say in this talk I cannot back up or explain, so ask your teacher."
For a DO to be that honest that he can't explain 1914, 1919 (and maybe, I wonder, if he would include 'overlapping generations' also?) is being way too 'honest' for the GB to accept. (Unless, he later qualifies that he couldn't 'explain' only due to the 'time factor' required for his talk?) Anyway, for so many JWs there to respond so favorably to him, indicates that they too can't or are not comfortable with anyway for them to explain. The brothers and sisters would find that very relieving to themselves, that a DO can't explain it either.
Also, the "ask your teacher," is this his clue to any Bible Studies, to ask the one studying with them, a clue that they would no doubt find very difficult for them and perk up questioning minds.

At least half of it is not necessary, a waste, by their own perception. That's why they are dropping to 1-day circuit assembly (for twice a year) next year. Good riddance!

So, this is all the best they could come up with for their 'Centennial;' two days, 1 1/2 hrs each day?, of which includes the common weekly WT summary. Maybe some stats of great increases in 'RVs' and "Pioneers?" Wow, I wonder what biblical symbolism will the GB conjure up about it.

Special Assembly Day - tepid applause
by sir82 injust got back from a recent sad.. after most talks, the applause was, at most, tepid.. it was striking in its tepidity, if that is possible (and if that is a word).. affter most talks, applause lasted literally no more than 5 seconds.
its volume was scarcely above a whisper.. it wasn't acoustics - the bethel speaker was technically a polished speaker (although presenting the same old boring info), and his talks generated noticeably louder applause.
but even still - that applause was maybe 10 seconds, and about normal-conversation level.. but local speakers - the applause was not much more loud than the hum coming from your refrigerator.. there were 1300+ people there.. it was just so weird - my previous large-group experience was at the agm, where people were nearly apoplectic & drooling with delight over their new "silver bibles" (which very few have read, i'd wager).. these guys were just "zombified".. speaking of bibles - bethel dude called it a "platinum bible".

Sounds like even the two, 1-day Circuit Assemblies (starting 2015) will be in trouble soon enough, downsized to zap. Seeing how baptisms are dropping, not very inspiring to see.
