What I Saw & Heard in the Oral Argument Hearing on January 14, 2015
by ABibleStudent inim not an attorney and i could not record the hearing, so please forgive me if i make mistakes in relating what i remember of the oral argument hearing for jane doe (i.e., candace conti) versus the watchtower bible & tract society on january 14, 2015 and the length of this post.. i arrived at the civic center/union plaza in san francisco, ca about 7:30. the area is very nice with a few homeless people sleeping in the park across from the courthouse.
it took me about 10 minutes to find the clerks office for the court on the first floor, which opened at 8:00.. once the clerks office opened, the two clerks who i talked with were very polite and helpful.
the arguments for jane doe (i.e., candace conti) versus the watchtower bible & tract society were scheduled 5th out of (i think) 8. while i was in the office a cameraman and another person for nbc arrived asking about the hearing for candace contis case.. the courtroom for the 1st appellate court is on the 4th floor and takes up most of that floor.

Will it be possible for someone to get the CD and make a 'written' transcript of it and make the info available free that way? -

Conti Appeal Preview - Oral Argument Jan 14
by Chaserious inwith hopefully a good deal of interest here in the conti appeal tomorrow (or later today, depending on where you are), i thought that on my ride home from work tonight i'd preview what to expect and what i think the key issues are for any who are interested.
i have had a busy few weeks and haven't had time to read everything, but i had some time to look at the appeal briefs during my work commute the past couple days.
it'll be interesting to see what develops out of the network news coverage of this case.

Wilson Elser is a full-service law firm with over 750 attorneys in 26 offices throughout the United States.[2] Wilson Elser ranks among the top 100 law firms identified by The American Lawyer and is listed in the “Top 50” by The National Law Journal. With an office in London and a network of affiliate firms in France, Germany and Mexico, Wilson Elser provides legal advice and representation on a worldwide basis.
Just saw on the case docket this law firm ordered the CD of the Oral Arguments. A large firm and working on advice/representation "worldwide." I would guess there are many lawyers/firms watching this case.
I saw on Wiki the Catholic Church had at least 3,000 abuse lawsuits in U.S. alone. JWs may be only 1% or less of Catholics, that would be about an equivalent 30 lawsuits against WT. Surely, the WT has that at least, past and current, and expectedly more coming soon. Obviously, any JWs claiming they don't have this problem as bad as the Catholic Church are very wrong.

Re: Experienced Attorneys and Paralegals Needed at Bethel
Dear Brothers:
Experienced, mature, spiritually-qualified licensed attorneys and paralegals are needed to assist with the work at Bethel. (Phil. 1:7) There is a particular need for those who have experience in litigation, corporate matters, or real estate transactions. We are hoping to locate several experienced attorneys and paralegals who have exceptional analytical, research, and writing abilities.
If there are any publishers in your congregation who may meet these needs, please encourage them to submit an Application for Temporary Volunteer Program (A-19) along with their résumé to the United States branch office through the Congregation Service Committee as soon as possible. The letter to temporary volunteer applicants (A-20) and the letter to those applying for theocratic schools, Bethel service, or other forms of special full-time service (A-63) should also be provided. This will allow the branch office to review their application and possibly invite them to work temporarily for one week, three months, or more in the Legal Department.
Thereafter, it may be that an invitation to serve at Bethel would be extended to them.
We trust that you will use discretion in approaching publishers regarding volunteering to assist the organization in the above way. Please note that we are not encouraging individuals to pursue higher education or university degrees to obtain skills related to legal matters. (w13 10/15 pp. 15-16 pars. 13-14) Thank you for your assistance.
Your brothers,
c: Circuit overseers
PS to secretary:
It is preferred that the Application for Temporary Volunteer Program (A-19) be submitted using the jw.org Inbox feature. Please include the words “Attention Legal Department” in the subject line of the message.

My comment: Double standards of education okay for WT legal dept. benefit but can not be for personal benefit. Ugh!

Why did ABC & NBC want to record this? Seemed uneventful from a media aspect and costly to do & not that interesting for the general public yet at this point. Of course, the final decision may be news worthy, hopefully.
Don't Courts do their own recordings sometimes, not with 'media?'

Arguments show "submitted.". I understand the Court has up to 90 days for decision. Hopefully sooner. -

Oral arguments are suppose to be just 10-15 min. each side. Not to be just more repeat of what had been said already. Judge could ask question(s). So normally short, possibly intense. Then, sometimes, something could be extended, but rarely. Then, the decision is to normally be done within 90 days or less, normally. (From what I have read, but I am not an authority, perhaps someone else clarify more?)

So tomorrow then? Will ABC & NBC be 'airing' this partly? Will they have the recording to access or does that remain with the Court only. How soon will we be able to access this? -

Looks like ABC New York got the okay.

12/19/2014order filed.
upon due consideration, the media request of applicant abc news to make a video recording of oral argument in the above-referenced appeal is granted.

Gayle
So, can we expect ABC to report/air anything partially next Wed. with Court approval? It would only involve the lawyers there to be videoed/heard by the Court. Hopefully, soon after we will get a site somewhere for the 'full' report.
Thereafter, I understand, the Court has up to 90 days for decision. Hopefully less.
