PHILIP K. DICK and parables of the WTBCS
by hamsterbait inseveral of this writer's stories are almost parables describing how the wt controls and twists reality.. there is one about a machine that sits in the home and warns people they are having the wrong thoughts and ideas.
if you don't stop it kills you.. i especially love the world where nothing is as it seems, and the people are rescued by an empty space ship that eats them.. any story by him that you think does the same?.

Why label it a cult?
by rebel8 inwhat purpose does it serve?
it just seems to polarize people and ostracize those who aren't ready or willing to label it a cult.
anyone can look up the dictionary definition of a cult (or experts' definitions).

As much as I disagree with the org and the group of men that are running it, I do not believe that the JW organization fits under the very narrow definition of a "cult". A cult generally follows ONE MAN, like the people that followed Jim Jones in the guyana tragedy and drank the koolaid, and there have been many others. Although I think Ted Jaracz and the rest of the ultraconservative wing of the jw leadership currently exert a lot of influence over the organization, I think the org has actually done a pretty good job of structuring itself so that NO one man can take complete control of it.

We go back to what we were before we were conceived by our parents--nonexistence. We've all been there already, folks.

A question for all you grilling pro's out there!
by restrangled inwhat is the best way to cook pork babyback ribs?.
they are expensive and i just bought 2 racks.
they were on the grill on low for about 2 hours (250 degrees) it started pouring rain so i had to bring them in to finish in the oven.. what is your favorite way to cook them, keeping them tender?.
-
owenfieldreams
try marinating them in coca cola--this will tenderize them and then brown them in the oven. after that, put in grill over indirect hot coals with moist hickory wood chips on the coals(this will give them a good smoked flavor).

For those who didn't go to uni....
by brinjen inespecially those who didn't go on account of the borg (the vast majority).
do you regret this decision?
if you did go what would you have studied?

I regretted it for a long time, because at the time I wanted to go so badly and my parents wouldn't let me. And, even though I think the WTS's heavy-handed approach to trying to tell parents whether or not their children can go to college is wrong, my whole view of higher education and academia has evolved and I no longer think having a piece of paper stating that you have a degree from somewhere automatically guarantees you success, unless of course you want to make a career in government, law, or medicine. If you're going to go into one of those fields, which I never was, then obviously a college degree will be necessary. Otherwise, I think it just depends on the individual. Keep in mind some of the most successful people in business either never finished college or never went at all, like Bill Gates and Sam Walton.

Blonde, Brunette, Redhead? Do you have a favorite?
by Paralipomenon inthis is a fun question that i like to pose in social settings.
regardless of who your significant other is, i've found that people have a definite preference for hair color.
what i found even more interesting is that people usually preferred a hair color different than their own.

I'm blonde and caucasian, but prefer black females.

by needproof ini have received word that we are now 'very, very close'.
at the sunday meeting, according to my trusted source, the speaker actually said that 'it is no longer years, nor months - yet weeks and days'.

Planning Trip To DragonCon In Atlanta; any suggestions . . .
by Madame Quixote inappreciated regarding other atlanta attractions that you've personally "endured" or enjoyed.
after squandering yet another perfectly lovely holiday weekend glued to the computer, and doing housework and laundry, i've decided to plan a sojourn to atlanta, georgia for labor day weekend.
my observations and experience of this city have been limited to airport layovers, and i never really thought about visiting.. i'm excited about dragoncon, but even more excited about touring atlanta for a weekend, especially after checking out its attractions via the internet.

The aquarium is neat, but you will need to make reservations if you plan on going there. Several big companies are headquartered there, and offer guided tours. Some that come to mind are the CNN Center and Coca-Cola. The Varsity is neat too.....

I am all for interracial relationships. It seems pretty narrow minded to me that an individual would make skin color or race a determining factor in a relationship. The last time I checked, we ARE living in the 21st century...
