How many Christians were there in the 1st century?
by yaddayadda injust been reading former long-time brooklyn bethelite tom cabeen's very encouraging article entitled "where is the body of christ?".
(can be found at http://divinetruth.homestead.com/bodyofchrist.pdf) .
in his article, tom says: "when john received the revelation around the end of the first century, there were hundreds of thousands of christians, even by conservative estimates.

Blood Transfusion "matter of choice" for JWs
by dozy inhttp://www.utvlive.com/newsroom/indepth.asp?id=80831&pt=n.
richard parker, a member of the jehovah`s witnesses, says that the refusal of transfusions is one of their fundamental beliefs.
based on what is written in the bible.it is not forbidden by their faith but is a matter of choice for the individual, he said.. who is richard parker - branch committee?

but is a matter of choice for the individual
I guess in the sense that theBibleWT trained conscience leads a JW to refuse them. If he does not he no longer is a JW. -

Would you die for what you believe?
by avidbiblereader inwith many strong feelings or beliefs either way for christianity, atheism, jw would you be willing to die for your beliefs, or are they just feelings that never come from the heart?
if faced with death for your beliefs, would you?.

nope.. after finding out the watchtower was seriously flawed after believing it for a lifetime i dont put any value on belief anymore.
Considering that beliefs are only mind generated abstracts and concepts, it seems foolish to die for them.
you both well expressed my current thought.
I'd like to add that given the long time it has taken many of us to wake up, my conclusion is that it may often be harder to question one's beliefs rather than die for them.

very interesting question. I have been trying for some time to get information on 1st century Christians but have not yet found a reliable source apart from the Bible (that does not give many details anyway).
If someone knows of books worhtwhile being checked, please let me know.

Specific banned shows, songs, etc...?
by AllAlongTheWatchtower ini know the society tells people not to listen to rock n roll cause its from teh satan, not to watch r rated movies because they're "worldly", etc.
but i was wondering if folks had any specific instances where one song, one show, one movie, or whatever was singled out as being particularly 'evil', and banned on an individual basis?
i was never a jw, but was in the worldwide church of god...the two are rather similar, i've seen many (and made quite a few myself) comparisons on the board; and i can remember as a child that every once in a while certain things would get brought up as being more evil and worldly than others.. examples of specific bans:.

I think they went to a roy Orbison concert, and if memory serves me correctly, (according to my parents story), he made an accouncement that all JW's were to leave.
we should open a thread about urban legends of JW's as I heard exactly the same story about Zucchero that asked that all JW's had to leave the concert (otherwise the demons would not help him...).
AC / DC in my days was supposed to mean Anti Christ / Death to Christ....

Name ONE half-truth that the Society has EXPLICITLY elaborated on

find a half-truth that the watchtower has mentioned in detail, whether at meetings, assemblies or conventions or in the botchtower.

Has anyone ever been "outed" due to posting on JWD?
by nvrgnbk inbeing the paranoid, inactive, with alot of family and "friends" still in the org.
i'm sure it's been discussed before but i don't recall reading on that topic here on jwd.
i know that fear prevented me from posting while i was exiting as an elder.

Anyway I just asked if I continue associating with them can I be disfellowshipped? The answer... NO!!
I bet in some congregations the answer would have been yes.

one WT once made clear reference to Basic Instinct (without naming the title of the movie).
When I was a teen I remember seeing all sorts of lists of "banned" music circulated among the brothers. Not to talk about LP that played on reverse mode would contain satanic messages, like stairway to heaven of Led Zeppelin, Hotel California, and many more.
Nowdays, Harry Potter and Pokemon were specifically mentioned by the CO as not for JW's.
