It is an abuse of power for sure, but no different than what Quebec does up here in Canada.
People actually voted for those clowns. If they are not representing the will of the people, they can be repealed out of office. Though most voters feel impotent, or there are enough that actually support this action.
As stupid as it is to a rational mind, this is actually democracy "working".

Just as Republicans grumble about Obama and Democrats, Obama is the fairly elected president of the US. As it pains me to say, the GOP members are fairly elected by their constituents and are responsible to them for their current actions.
If it represents the will of their voters, they will get re-elected when their term is up, I suspect though that this will only frustrate moderate conservatives more. At what point do the negative points of their own party outweigh the negatives of the other side? Even with the current nutty behavior they represent very close to 50% of the nations popular vote but I shudder to think that will last.
They need to campaign less on how evil Obama is, and promote better policies. Right now they are just throwing a temper tantrum. The majority of Americans are not rich. They need to change their image as the party for the rich and corporations and start presenting policies that help all Americans.
i think as things get real tuff for the governing body that the build up of stress from dealing with a corporation founded on lies and manipulation of people that is comming to a head and all the lawsuits and possible criminal prosecution and the day today pressure of having all your decision back fire on you.. the final stage of wishful thinking is the nightmare stage where the whole delusion falls apart.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/wishful_thinking.

I contacted them a few months ago and asked what the status was. After a bit of searching I was put in contact with the individual heading up the initiative who said they had a whole package of damning information about the Watchtower but were unable to crack the database. Within a few days they released the information packet to the public.
A lot of speculation and baseless assertions, nothing earthshattering.

atlantis has very kindly let me see a copy of the aug 21, 2013 letter to all bodies of elders in the united states.. they are being instructed to re-organize the service meeting for the week commencing september 2nd (next week) to include a special recruitment talk to attract skilled volunteer workers for the new warwick hq.. an interesting feature of the letter is its comparison of the project with nehemiah's rebuilding of the walls of jerusalem.
considering the relocation of hq is financially motivated more than anything, the analogy is more than a little bewildering.. here is a scan of the opening comments of the two-page outline, to be given in the next local needs item.... .
“Those who volunteer to assist at Warwick may have to make sacrifices in order to help.” But it promises, “Jehovah will richly reward their efforts.”
Maybe Jehovah will move the Watchtower to forgive any outstanding loans the congregations of these volunteers have for their sacrifice.

LOGIC says they realize they are losing the battle against the internet and should push for more moderate measures. HISTORY says they will make changes to exert more control
i was thinking about the next scenario:.
the united states (and western world) are losing influence compared to china, india and other new economy's.. with this decline of influence, the watchtower society, a true american religion and it's subsidiary's corporations are losing profits and losing it's base in much country's under china / india / indonesia / brazil influence.
what i see is that the watchtower society is selling it's main assets: landmark buildings in optimal condition.
While I do think that it must be maddening to see all that money, but not be able to touch it directly, the job isn't without perks. When you consider what being a member of the GB actually entails.
They get up and have people kiss their ass from sunrise to sunset, they just walk around barking orders. All expense trips to places all over the world where they just get up and say whatever is on their minds. Every congregation they visit they are treated like a celebrity.
They also have something that money can't buy. Power.
They intimately control millions of people's lives.
They could snap their fingers and have someone disfellowshipped.
Personally I see donations dropping as their membership numbers fall in wealthy countries. Converting their assets to liquid allows them to supplement the loss with investment money. If we get another economic crash though, they are sunk. Would need to implement new light on tithing.
for three weekends this summer, a friend and i protested outside district assemblies being held in the tucson convention center.
our approach was very low key and completely non-confrontational: we just held our posters and smiled.
this was our experience at the first two assemblies (for the third assembly, see the next paragraph).
Next year, learn the moves to some dance and coordinate with your fellow protestors without music.
Video it then put it to the music online as the attendants try to keep in front of you. I assure you, that will go viral.
