  i was just thinking about how before i became more of an uber dub in my teen years i was a very frightened child.

  The cult makes even families that are totally in, less close. —wakanda

  o my god. That is tragically true. I watched it happen.

  My youngest daughter and l had the last “dance” in the Org of all my many children. She was starting high school and l watched her negotiate respect of those who mentored her (an elder’s wife she cared deeply for)and her growing resistance to the coercive atmosphere of all “association”. And she did not “feel” Jehovah.

  l let her be. And we navigated the following years without the Truth screwing up her life. She went to college and graduated. On the other hand we were open to a young unbaptised son of an elder who “left” just as he graduated highschool three years ahead of her. He was on his own.

  And so many were cut of at young young ages. So vulnerable. Always wanting their parents to give them that loving approval, attention -CARE.

  To talk to these kids and not condemn their choice was seen as weak parenting.

  looking back on my two decades as a jehovah’s witness, i’ve come to realize how the constant theme of endurance is playing a detrimental role on the individual's psyche.. jehovah’s witnesses have become far too good at keeping going.

  they’re experts at surrendering to the demands of the watchtower, living up to what’s expected of them, and getting on with the priorities that those in power have defined and imposed upon them.

  they keep showing up, presenting themselves a dutiful pioneer or ministerial servant.

  The difference between an active Jehovah’s Witness and an awakened one who has walked away from the battlefield is, we wear our wounds on the outside. There is no need to hide them internally and deal with the pain in ashamed silence anymore.

  the number of self-proclaimed christians is shrinking in america.. i’ve been collecting data on this trend for over 10 years, and the surveys reveal an important truth: fewer people claim a christian affiliation than ever before, and those who claim no religious affiliation are the fastest growing group in america.. but while fewer people may belong to christian churches or communities, americans will likely retain some form of religious identity – especially if what’s happening in europe is an indicator of things to come.. a new pew forum survey conducted in western europe reveals that christianity is waning there even faster than it is in the united states.

  l ever maintain that the words of Jesus saved my life but l say that doctrines kill. So l do not identify as a Christian.

  Since l don’t know or care if there is proof of a Jesus , care still less if he was Christ the Savior l can hardly qualify as a Christian.

  If there is a bread of his to eat then l can eat it or not. That it helped me is good enough and l am not ashamed to say l needed it.

  That is not the Christian message l ever heard in a church.

  edit: so specific to the question: l do not want to be identified as Christian anymore in spite of what l said above. I have found Christianity’s gate is too narrow .( And yes l know Jesus is supposed to have said something about that is the road to life is narrow but.. .. in my world l would have to talk about that.)

  The elephant on the street

  as a contractor i travel around for my job, i was stopped this morning to buy some milk at a store in a small village i guess and as i turned a corner i saw 2 elders i know personally manning a cart in the cold outside the store with not a soul in sight and an unlikely place for much traffic even though it was outside a country store.

  1 elder is my brother in laws father and the other was in my old cong when i left, i said hello, talked about the weather and general chit chat and was my usual self, they were pleasant also but nothing was mentioned to me about anything spiritual etc.

  i know they will be aware of some of my reasons for leaving (the few that i talked about initially before shutting my trap) but they were unwilling to engage in saving my life with their work!

  Shunning is the opposite behavior of the lost sheep illustration. A person who accidentally crosses paths with a “lost sheep” is told to run like hell away!

  This happens to me often at my Farmer’s market where l sell.

  Packing up this past very hot Saturday a middle aged woman in a modest skirt, blouse and simple pearl necklace asked did l also made wooden bowls. I said l rarely do as l am primarily a maker of kitchen tools, spoons and the like. She soon launched into a pleasant and nearly personal revery on bowls her son makes. She went on at some length before saying suddenly. My name is ———-.Aren’t you one of Jehovah’s Witnesses from such and such congregation?

  And l vaguely remembered her as one of those off in the woods folks. Sweet l remembered but l knew she was in for a crash landing.

  ”Not any more” l told her.

  Her eyes turned from me and her face fell frozen. I said the obvious “ so we can’t talk” and she walked away without any sound but the rustling of her petticoat.

  l hope the sheer innocence of our conversation haunts her. They don’t see us as lost sheep —but they have made us the black sheep the evil ones of the fold and yet they never ask us —why?

  Hairtrigger- coincidently was just reading about Boyle Heights school district in a gang area of LA. The brief video interviews are good to watch.

  Grrreat Teacher—you are a champion to do that work. The short interviews above mirror your experience. So frustrating that voices such as your own are not heard.

  These problems are similar to all failing schools and struggling communities . The incarceration rates in all these areas have impacts too.

  the Earth is 7000 years old—vidiot

  l was a convert. If this had been put out front and center from the beginning l might not have gone in.

  I remember confronting his understanding that the society had placed as the earth’s age in some publication after l had been in for a while. I worked hard to reconcile this with other science. Finally, I let myself suspend both belief and doubt by creating a “shelf” in my brain. This convenient arrangement allowed me to put problems of faith in closed boxes to be dealt with at a future date.

  Opening those “boxes” meant leaving the bOrg. though l didn’t acknowledge it then.

  There were a lot of reasons l did not like Hilary Clinton. She and her husband are as self serving as the man who now is in the White House.

  The changes this country has to face in these days would never be realized under her. I don’t believe she had the vision or heart make strong action. She was tough but that isn’t enough.

  And even if l am wrong about that , the baggage of her husband’s doings would have made others reluctant to work with her.

  I thought Bernie Sanders was independent thinking . The best thing we had to go with. I did what l could to get him elected. Hillary did him dirty.
