yes, mostly people don't attach any importance to it, after all in their experience it's no big deal if they quit going to church, just cults get their knickers in a twist if someone manages to escape. that's one reason it's so nice to find other ex-jws - no one else really understands the background or what an achievement it is to get out of the org.

Ever notice how interested worldly friends were to hear you'd left...zzzzzz
by Gregor inthe first few years after i got my head out of my jw ass i assumed that worldly associates would be fascinated to hear of my escape....wrong.
most of them looked at me like "what the f--- are you talking about?"...

Do you 'tidy up' before JW relatives visit?
by RollerDave ini've got an older sister who is a decent sort.. she remains within the congregation and is married to the po, but still treats me like a human being despite having inklings of my true views.. she was coming over to discuss a few family things so i 'tidied up' my ray franz books by turning their spines to the wall and carried a smaller and less obvious gun in my pocket than usual.. i viewed it as courtesy to an invited guest, but wondered if it might be a typical behavior.. any thoughts?.

It's OK to avoid unnecessary controversy. I used to do that; eventually I just didn't care any more and I figured out that I wasn't fooling anyone and then I started leaving out the christmas decorations or the birthday cards or whatever incriminating evidence was lying around. This constant examination of one's motives is a hangover from JW days - you don't need to look at all of your actions under the JW microscope. There is a whole lot of stuff in the world that just doesn't matter, and anyway you get to live your life the way you want to and if that includes avoiding unnecessary controversy, go ahead.

Time to make my thoughts known......

Hi R.F.,
I'll say hi in small print. So nice to hear a young person doing some serious thinking. I would say, keep thinking, keep researching, and one of these days, have a heart to heart talk with your fiancee. It would be really sad for both of you if you got married before finding out if you are both thinking along the same lines. The advice to get an education is very good, learn something useful and have a career. Even if you decide to stay a JW, that will be helpful for you. As for the constant judging and criticism and back stabbing and gossip that goes on in the org., don't let it get you down. Until you really think this through, don't take any serious steps that can't be undone. Please accept my best wishes for you and your fiancee - I really hope you get out of that horrible org., and have a long loving marriage.

One more newbie, yeiks!
by wings inmy story as a witness follows much of a 'dumb and dumber' sort of path.
i get to be both dumb, and dumber, of course.
what drove me to post on this site was sheer despiration.

"there is no place in the witness society for suffering humanity"
oh that is so true, and what happened to your son is tragic. I am really sorry for him and for you. You have to put one foot in front of the other and keep functioning, but you don't have to do it the JW way. Look for social services in your area, maybe home visits for your parents (or was it just your mother?) and support groups. I have never met anyone face to face who posts on this forum, but just the same everyone here has been really supportive and it helps a lot.

You Never Did Enough As A Witness!
by minimus inone thing that i will never miss is how you were made to feel inferior----that nothing you did was ever really good enough to satisfy the organization and of course by extension, jehovah god.
i know of sooooooo many witnesses that are truly depressed because they can never seem to satisfy god or the elders.. people even start getting mysterious illnesses and believe the "demons" are always trying to get at them.
the mentality is that "everyone hates us because we're jehovah's witnesses".

when I was in the org. I thought I was the only one who felt that way, the only one who was not worthy, who wouldn't make it through armageddon. I actually walked away because of depression - and I only started to feel better when I saw a bumper sticker that said "since I gave up hope, I feel better." I realized how true that was - and the more distance I got between me and the org., the more I could see what it really is. I left because I was so seriously depressed I couldn't pretend any more, but I stay away because my eyes have been opened and I see what a damaging organization it is, how many families are destroyed by it. I am so glad I'm out.

Are JW's generally better than average people?
by JH ini for one, would blindly trust just about anyone on this forum, just the fact of knowing that you already were a jw.. does this mean that jw's in general are better people or are we a very close bunch of people?.

wow is the longest thread ever? And all for an arrogant person who can only spout WT jargon. I remember being that certain of my religion at one time. Now I'm a lot older and more experienced and I know that kind of certainty is false. One way ordinary wordly people are better than the WT society folks I used to know, and even love, is that the wordly people I know don't have this tremendous sense of entitlement and scorn for everyone else. They believe in carrying their own burdens, paying their own way, and they don't any of them sit around and talk with immense satisfaction of the time coming soon when god will kill off 99.9% of the people on earth for no good reason at all.

Brent - you're a fellow massage therapist, aren't you? I make my own soap, too, a lovely blend of oils that is good for my dry itchy skin, with lye and lavender essential oil. I love it, plus I can make a year's worth in a batch and handmade soap is a nice gift along with essential oils, hand-knit exfoliation glove, that sort of thing.

by Elsewhere ini wonder if she will do a "simple life - prison style"... of course it will be one of those "women in prison" movies that are shown on late night cable.

"Regarding those that believe one DUI should be punishable by one year in prison, do you realize that merely having 2 drinks in the course of an hour can make a person legally over the .08 limit?? Have YOU ever done such a thing? Maybe you've had drinks but didn't think you were (legally) drunk. Chances are most persons who have gone out for a few drinks have been over the limit."
All that means is that there are a whole lot more people out there driving under the influence than is safe for any of us. So, if two drinks in the course of an hour would make you legally drunk, then for the rest of us, only have one drink per hour. Driving under the influence is pervasive throughout society and somehow people seem to think it's not really that bad.
Paris Hilton is so fucking stupid that even if she killed someone while driving under the influence, she wouldn't think it was her fault, and she would be offended at the notion she ought to pay with jail time instead of $$$.
