I used to volunteer in the first aid department, which was lots less boring than sitting in the bleachers. Mostly people with headaches, dehydration, sunburns and food poisoning. Real injuries were taken care of by paramedics - lots of JW paramedics. I was just a little helper. My job was to sit there and go get someone if a patient showed up. Of course at the huge huge conventions, they had little urgent care centers set up. Could take care of many problems. It was one of the best volunteer jobs at the convention.

I'm going to be disfellowshipped on Wednesday
by Thinking of Leaving inthe elders cames to my home on saturday and i didn't answer the door, so they told my sister to relay the message.
the message was "you know what it's about, we're going to make the announcement next meeting".
i knew it was coming...but it feels so weird.

"even if your mind knows that it's for the best you heart still has to get over it"
Very well said!
I liked the suggestion to tie a bunch of balloons all over your front door/gate. View it as a rebirth, a chance to find a new you, and celebrate! You'll feel sad too, but that will pass when you find out how much nicer the world is without the org., and what nice people are out there.

1984 WT Bound Volume; a review of Cult gold!
by WingCommander insorry if this is long.
i happened to be at my mothers house last night, and decided to look up the whole explanation of the 1914 doctrine.
i have seen from others on here and also the internet the covers from some of the 1984 watchtowers that talk about 1914, a focal point of bible prophecy?, 1914, the generation that will not pass away, etc.

I grew up in the org. and they DEFINITELY were really worked up about the end coming in 1975. I remember the armageddon dreams I had as a little kid. I knew people who sold everything and went to live in little trailers so they could pioneer until the end, which came for them, poor things, before it came for the whole world. In fact, I am in touch with the DF'd daughter of an old couple who did just that. Her father died just recently and her mother is 86 years old and has nothing - no retirement except for a little social security, no savings because they sold everything in 1974 and used up the proceeds long ago, and not even any help from the congregation since they seem to have forgotten about her now that she is really old and housebound.

Was it Dodger Stadium or the Rose Bowl in 1969? I went to conventions at both of them - Dodger stadium at least had a view. What I remember of Dodger Stadium was that I was way at one end of the stadium, and as it happened the way the sound system worked, everyone on the opposite side of the stadium heard the music first and so I heard the kingdom melodies sweep in a wave around the stadium until it reached me - gave me chills. What I remember about the Rose Bowl was the absolutely enormous and hideous traffic jam after it was over on Sunday afternoon - very few went to their cars early, so 114,000 people all headed out at the same time, and we sat in our car in a traffic jam just to get out of the parking lot until midnight or later. What a disaster.
so, whichever one it was, I was there in 1969, for the whole eight days. Don't remember the drama much, but I think it was in 1968 that they talked about masturbation in such detail I finally figured out what it is. Before that they were so obscure when they talked about it, I didn't pay attention. They went on about a lot of things that I didn't understand or care about, so I didn't pay attention quite often. But that one was an eye-opener!

Blood transfusions, lying, and God's laws - an epiphany
by sir82 inwe all know about "theocratic war strategy" - it's not really lying, if the person you are speaking "isn't entitled to know the truth".
but, it suddenly struck me - this definition of lying, unique to jws (lying is not merely telling a known untruth, but telling such to one who doesn't deserve the truth) helps them justify the blood doctrine.
well, consider the extreme example cited in the old wts bold enough to actually name & describe "theocratic war strategy" - a country where jws are under ban.

I have heard of most of those things - never heard of the JWs attempting to curry favor with Hitler, although it doesn't surprise me. The org. has really elastic principles, although they demand that their followers have really rigid principles.

worst week in my life
by Hortensia inlast monday my husband, a nice guy, after ranting for a bit about terrorists, came over to me, to kiss me i thought.
he hit my head and then started to choke me, shouting "be healed.
" i managed to get away from him and he kept yelling "be healed" and saying that i was bewitched and had put a curse on him.

thanks again! Well, the first step for my husband is the examination by the court appointed doctor. As for the guns, I have to face the fact that if I aimed a gun at a burglar he would just come over and take it from me and use it on me, so I'm better off with a good alarm system and being really careful. I'm too much of a wimp. I kept searching through my husband's stuff to find all the weapons because the police say he has a lot more guns registered to his name than have been found so far. What I found was shocking - maybe I should have been a snoopier wife! I would have been in denial, I suppose, even if I did find all the guns. I tended to believe what he told me.
I really feel for anyone else in this sort of situation. I am lucky to have some good friends who have been very kind and helpful. I hope anyone else in this situation can get some help sooner than I did - and avoid the terrible scare.
It has been very nice to be able to post on this forum and have people respond so quickly and so compassionately. So, now, on to more cheerful topics!

I have been rereading all the posts on this thread - they were such a lot of help to me in the midst of all that madness. So here's an update - my husband is still in jail. The judge, defense attorney and district attorney all agree he is crazy and have appointed a doctor to examine him and report to the court. In the meantime I have been going through all his stuff looking for guns - kept finding more guns for a while (even a hand grenade!!!) plus drug paraphernalia. For a week I called the cops every night to pick up more guns and ammunition, even had the bomb squad out at the house because of the hand grenade. However, the drama seems to be over and I believe as do the police that although he definitely is crazy, the cause may be meth or something similar. I have found out he was living a double life, not the person I thought he was. My emotions are all over the place, but mainly I am really really grateful (esp. after the Virginia Tech shooting) that no one is dead. He didn't kill me, he didn't kill the police officer or his friend, and the police officer didn't kill him. Thanks everyone so much for your kindness to me.
