  ok this is the summer of rain here in texas.

  we have 30 inches of rain in months we don't normaly get rain.

  Alot of those people that were supposedly waiting for the gov to come get them could have fiqured out how to leave or at least find a higher safer spot. There was more then enough warning given.

  If we as a collective nation have not fiqured out yet that all levels of gov are never there when we need them by now then you are doomed and screwed. History always repeats it's self and we need to keep our heads out of our behinds and learn from it.

  How many people do we know only wear seatbelts because the gov made it a law? Even after it is law how many do we see that still don't wear them or make thier kids wear them? So I am not the least bit surprised that when they are advised to "get out of Dodge" because a hurricane is comming and your house is 10 feet below sea level that they do nothing and then cry a river about what happened.

  If you are going to be stupid you'd better be tough!

  I always get some mild amusement out of watching impending hurricane coverage on the news. People seem to wait until the very last minute to buy plywood, water, batteries and flashlights. Of all natural disasters hurricanes can be predicted well in advance. Heck they can look at the rainfall in Northern Africa and be able to tell if that will form into a hurricane. Every year there is a hurricane season and every year the news shows hardware stores emptied out of of the same supplies and people whinning about not being able to get it. What did they do with the plywood they bought last year? Or the year before?

  FEMA is a disaster in and of it's self. If people would pull thier heads out and think ahead maybe even prepare a bit we would not need FEMA in the first place.

  We had a bad windstorm here last Dec. that was forecasted three days ahead of time and people still were not prepared. I never saw so much whinning and moaning on the news in my life. I loaned out three corded phones to friends because they never realized that when the power goes out cordless phones don't work. When they returned them I asked if they were going to go buy a $9.95 phone to have on hand for the next outage. I got the aloof "maybe" sort of answer back.

  So you folks living in Florida, the Carolinas, Alabama etc. go buy plywood, batteries and water RIGHT NOW! The shelves are full, there are no lines and all the stores have a great selection. I would bet the power is also on so you won't even need a flashlight to navigate the isles.

  Please humor me so when I am watching CNN or The Weather channel I won't have any reason to shake my head in utter disgust and confused dis-belief. It's at the point now that watching the human behavior exhibited pre-hurricane is a twisted source of entertainment for me.

  5go, be safe and I will hold a positive thought for you and the family that you ride it out w/o any serious problems. Now go buy some plywood for your windows before the big rush!

  Very well put Terry! I nominate that for post of the year.

  Any alien traveling towards earth would first be picking up our TV, radio and internet signals. They would not need to understand the languages to fiqure out that earth is an insane asylum.

  I am not worried about the "stuff" it's the type of person who has it and what they do with it. Someone yakking on thier cell phone as they blow a stop sign is far more dangerous then some guy that finds a rocket launcher and turns it in.

  Purps, It's a ground covering type plant. I don't know if it's in the succulent family. We have a few patches of it on our place and in late spring it has bright red berries on it. The plant book doesn't say if it is either. The berries are edible but will give you a "pickle face" since they are so tart.

  I am always intriqued by the alpine wild flowers. They are under snow for nine or more months out of the year but still bloom and polinate.

  Kinnikinnick (bear berry) The indians used this as a tobacco.

  

  Unknown flower. Could not find it in our alpine flower guide book. It doesn't appear to need soil to grow. I have seen those flowers in gift shops that get thier moisture and nitrogen out of the air. I am wondering if this one is related? We saw many of them just growing in cracks and doing fine.

  

  Another unknown not in the book. Anyone else know?

  Have fun skiing!

  Last night the snow level dropped down to 7500 feet so we got up there just in time. Although it would be cool to go back up and see some fresh snow today. When I got up this AM I felt like I had an eighty year old body.

  It is always fun to drag the kids away from the TV and computer and have them experience some of the unique outdoors. Seeing the mountain goats was certainly the high point of the hike. Next year we are going up to Carbon Glacier so my daughter can see a glacier up close.

  Jess also had a great time feeding these little buggers (ground squirel) that had no fear of people at all. This one was clear up at the top of the second spurr. It blows me away how they can live in alpine tundra. He was on my shoulder a couple times trying to snag my apple pie.

  Me, the wife and daughter took off this morning to climb up one of the volcanic spurs of Mt Rainier. We started out at Sunrise elev 6400 feet. The weather was not perfect but there was no rain. We made it up to the second spurr at an elevation of 7600 feet.

  

  You can almost see the trail. Little Tahoma, a cinder cone next to Mt Rainier (big Tahoma).

  

  Emmons glacier, the largest one on Mt Rainier.
  

  Triple waterfall comming off the glacier. It drops at least 500 feet.
  

  We were very lucky to see some mountain goats. There were about twenty of them spread out.

  Jessica wanted to touch a cloud. On our decent we came down on a sharp ridge that had a cloud blowing up and over it. I told her to run down and hold her hands up and touch the cloud.

  We wanted to get up to the third spurr at over 8000 feet but the clouds were moving in fast. The wind was also blowing around 20 MPH and was pretty cold. Whiteouts are very dangerous because you can't even see the trail or your feet. They can drop the temp by twenty degrees in just a couple minutes. We had a great time and saw spectacular scenery. It has been several years since I have seeen mountain goats so this was a rare pleasure for us.
