The only time the Watchtower Society disclaims being a prophet is when their predictions fail.
The rest of the time they're a prophet.
okay, just to re-introduce myself, i was raised in the truth, regular pioneered for years, and am a member in good standing with my congregation.
i have just recently been shocked to realise that i actually have some doubts about the truth.
it helps for me to focus on one point at a time, and to write down my thoughts in a logical sequence.
The only time the Watchtower Society disclaims being a prophet is when their predictions fail.
The rest of the time they're a prophet.
i just can't stomach the time wasted in meetings and in the literature about the jw stand on holidays.. we try to explain why we don't celebrate christmas, mothers day, halloween, thanksgiving day, etc, etc, etc.. yet in reality, other than the memorial and anniversaries, we don't celebrate anything, regardless of the origins of the holiday.
if a new holiday was created encouraging people to be nice to each other, we still wouldn't celebrate it ... it would be worldly!!!.
all the time and energy put into determining the origins of certains days is just a waste of time.
I think there are two main reasons that the leadership doesn't want the rank and file to celebrate holidays.
1) JWs will end up spending time with "worldly relatives", and find out they're not as bad as the Watchtower Society makes them out to be.
In addition, the "worldly" relatives could be a source of information about pedophile lawsuits, UN involvement, etceteras ...
2) It takes time and money away from the organization. Why should JWs spend money on Christmas when they can put it in the contribution box?
When these factors are mitigated by the WTS, the celebration is okay. A good example is wedding ceremonies, which are clearly pagan, but the WTS doesn't care since they have extensive rules in place to control the "celebration".
i have not been on here in a long time but i have always valued the advice of everyone, so here goes.....i am dfd and my wife has never been a part of the org.
we are getting ready to have our first child in may.
my mother who is now living in patterson(at one of the motherships) speaks to me every 1 to 2 years.
"I would tell her to go to hell."
Me, too.
I would tell her to Burn in Bethel.
i am new here and i have been reading a lot of stuff on this board.
my parent's are both jws, i am still active and still believe i have the truth.
i consider myself a moral person.
"I still say that there seems to be a lot of hate towards this religion, and yeah, I don't get it."
You'll get it when you start asking questions.
ok guys and dolls, want your input here.
a friend of mine has a question...... .
"the brothers in bethel/headquarters seem very sincere and loving - what possible motive would they have in trying to deceive people, what do they get out of it?
They want the organization to perpetuate itself.
Their livelihoods depend on it.
i'm sorry if i'm totally wrong here but i have a serious problem.. i met a woman in the company i work in via intranet.
it is a very big company with offices all over the world.
she moved to the united kingdom just a few month before we met.
"I asked her if she will trust in the bible or in the company"
I thought this was a very interesting question on your part.
JWs always put the company first. But they are taught to hide this from others. They are told to tell people "The Bible says ...", rather than "The Society says ...", so as not to tip their hand as to the real source of the rules they are expected to live by.
I don't have much advice except to parrot what others have mentioned about baptism - don't do it. Joining the JWs leads to misery and mental illness.
just curious.
.
open mind.
It didn't "irritate" me, but I always wondered why God chose the U.S.A. to start his religion of choice.
I also always wondered why the "anointed" were mostly made up of Americans.
Why did Jesus want Americans as his co-rulers?
No offence to Americans.
so is this witness mother of my son a glutton for punishment or what ?
to avoid boring you all ( as if this isn't getting a bit redundant already ) i have edited bits and pieces of the best parts of her first e-mail , and his return e-mail, and her last e-mail after his reply so you can see what went down in conversation .
thanks for reading, here is his mom on sunday night .
"You won't die ! As a matter of fact, you will be like God ! Does that sound familiar ?"
As a matter of fact, it does sound familiar, as in "Millions now living will never die". I find it interesting, and more than a little coincidental, that the Watchtower Society co-opts the language of the devil when it comes to their eternal life carrot.
The devil told Eve that she would not die, just like the Watchtower Society told their followers in the 1920s that they would not die. But Eve did die, as did the millions that were fooled by Rutherford's unfounded claims.
Does this help us identify who the "evil slave" really is?
in a town near where i live the kh was sold and i noticed a couple of weeks ago a sign was put up...church of god in christ.
i know it's all about money....but it just seems hypocritical to me.
i mentioned it to my rommie...she didn't even bat an eye, like it was no big deal..
This has been mentioned already, but I thought I would add that it never made sense to me that:
1) It's okay for a congregation of JWs to sell a Kingdom Hall to another church.
2) It's not okay for an individual JW to sell services to a church.
A JW can get in serious trouble for fixing the roof on a church, for example.
The WTS refuses to discriminate based on religion when it comes to selling its buildings, since it doesn't want to get hauled into court. However, it expects its members to discriminate based on religion when deciding who should be a customer. If individual Witnesses get taken to court for religious discrimination, the WTS couldn't care less. It's not going to hurt their bottom line.
if you had the choice, when you were an active good jw, would you have prefered to work with a jw in your work place or not to have any around ?.

When I was a teenager I worked with another Witness. I was in Accounts Receivable and he was supposed to be in Sales. He was useless at his Sales job and at the Kingdom Hall as well. He never got a promotion at either place.
He was constantly trying to get some kind of dirt on me. He would listen in on my phone conversations as much as he could. He would ask the girl I sat next to (who was not a Witness), "Who was she talking to?", and "Was she talking to her mother?" I guess he wanted to know if I had "worldly" friends.
It was like his life's work was to get some dirt on me. He never did.
