erandir: the gal looking for me is a general in the Royal Thai Army. She's a black belt in karate and her standard carry is a .50 cal Desert Eagle. She knows more ways to kill us than we can think of to die. I'm pretty sure she was joking...

JeffT: My wife told me this one. She heard it from a friend at the hall. His deadpan delivery was flawless, as usual.
JD...funny
It's a shame, though....I was just beginning to enjoy life. And now I can foresee this thread will be the death of me.
Maybe the following disclaimer will improve my chances:
To those of you of the fairer sex...I mean no harm. Just some good-natured, tongue-in-cheek humor here.

What Do You Do for Work / Career?
by BlackPearl ini've been on the board for quite a while now and was wondering, what do my fellow jwdr's do for work, employment or career?
me, i'm in probably one of the most hated careers in america right now.
(not gonna tell you what it is either) but how about you, what do you do to earn a little coin?.

BlackPearl...that all depends on which types of mortgages you tried to sell and how you sold them. If they were subprime and you used hurry-tactics or other shady methods, then yes, you'll probably be looked down on. On the other hand, if you worked in a more reputable establishment selling better quality mortgages to those who can actually afford them, then I think you'll be ok. My wife works in mortgage processing (I'm giving away too much info for all those trolls out there looking to out me) and works for a small-town bank which is relatively autonomous.
Have you seen the newer movie "Maxed Out" by the same guy who did the Super Size Me film?

Beliefs, Honesty
by Hiddenwindow innot too long ago, i heard a district overseer say, at a circuit assembly, something astonishing; that he would continue to be a jehovahs witness even if it was proven to him that god does not exist.
his point was the organization and its moral standards protect people from a lot of trouble and that this by itself is very positive aspect.
i could not forget such a statement and, just as an exercise, started to pose the following scenario to some of my friends, including several ministerial servants an one elder: if you some how determine that this is not the truth, would you continue to be a witness?

yknot, I appreciate your viewpoint. You summed up the feelings of my wife and our friends who are still active witnesses. They don't buy into everything but want to stay and do a combination of waiting on Jehovah and keeping together with family and friends and also think that what they believe currently is as good as it is gonna get...that there isn't any better religion out there, so might as well stay with this one.

JohnDoe,
I think I understand your point. There are greedy people who always look for ways to get something for nothing...and this usually ends up hurting other people.
But there are also cheapies who take advantage of a minor loophole once in a while...in a cute, endearing way. Like my wife, for example.
And I'm sure DragonLady feels the same about her husband.
Making lemonade from a lemon wedge already given too you and a couple of packs of sugar/sweetner is not in the same league as the guy coming in and eating an extra side dish from the condiment section just because it's free. (This reminds me of a Mr. Bean sketch or maybe it was some other comedian.) I think it boils down to the attitude or the intention of the patron.
Anyway, I've tried some of my wife's attempted "lemonade," and I have to say it does not deserve to be called such. It tastes exactly like sweetened water with a squeeze of lemon. Hardly the same as the drink they sell at the restaurant with the high fructose corn syrup and the artificial flavoring and the high price.

The First 2007 Christmas Thread.... countdown is T-minus 119 days...
by AK - Jeff ini am starting to think about the joyous season already - i know, i know, i am way too early.
it is still summer in the northern hemisphere, school has only just gotten started, and the leaves haven't even turned yet.
still - i suppose i have catching up to do.

Bah humbug!
But seriously...I think Christmas is way too materialistic. Haven't you ever seen A Charlie Brown Christmas?
I don't plan on ever celebrating it again. That's not to say I won't spend the holidays with my parents and have Christmas dinner with them, if they want. I just won't go for the obligated presents.
Editted to add: But I totally understand the viewpoint of someone who has been raised not celebrating any holidays. I celebrated 24 Christmasses before giving them up. Enjoy!

Nah, I wouldnt penalize the waitress for the owners foolishness.
In a joint like that, I bet the waitress doesn't get to keep the tips anyway.
