I can relate to many of the things you said.. I'm also 3rd generation. Being the study-minded 'the-original-greek-says-brother' does not really help when you finally find out... although it does help you to find out in the first place. I remember making some comment about the etymology of 'diabolos' and being praised by the DO.. if only he'd known my thoughts :) As for keeping underground, I also played that game for a while.. like Morpheus, indeed. But there are no Neo's left in my cong, so I'm pulling out my cards.. to be honest I've really had enough of it... my family will absolutely not be influenced by me, my friends are out now, so I'm beginning to fade away, like a shadow. The only way to win the game is to stop playing very slowly, in my opinion. You have a right to live your own life as well.

How long do you want to play the game? Do you have any plans for the future? What will happen if you just say 'I don't believe it anymore' to your family? Please provide feedback, or you can PM me.

Does our language betray us?

has anyone else noticed how you can tell who is new or fading, who was a long timer, who was never really into it, etc just from the way posts and language are structured?

i think it struck me when i heard someone say they did their utmost to leave the organization..do your utmost..not a common expression in most people's worlds so it still twigged a jw connection.

reading steve hassan's book on mind control reminded me of just how important language is in cult group membership.

Absolutely.

Language is always tied up with mythology. Mythology is ideology in narrative form.

Were you referring to my last post? - I didn't notice myself using that expression.. so I guess you are right :)

I would like to make an analysis of JW 'theocratic' language one day - should be interesting...

P.S You might be interested in reading 'Mythologies' by Roland Barthes - a classic study in how everyday, in this case French culture is vested in mythology, and mythology in language.

Thanks for the feedback. Some responses and questions below:

@wannaaxit: No, I haven't DA'd. I'm trying to fade away as fast as possible... Please help me understand why one would want to DA? To me it seems you're playing the rules by the org's game then.. you end up losing your family.. so they still have indirect power over your life.. or am I wrong here? How about you?

@mysterious: I learned Hebrew to better understand the OT in the source language.. how ironic that would make one an apostate eventually.. anyway I found out that there could have been no Babylonian Confusion.. from there on Gen 1-11 came falling down, then the whole literal chronology.. then the wt as well of course. It's really enlightening to read directly from the source :)

@SirNose586: Sounds familiar.. I also researched 607/587 and know the site you are referring to. I'm sorry for you that you can't just leave, apparently ('still stuck'). That also sounds familiar. Could you provide some more info? Or rather not?

@Anony-Mouse: Good to hear from you.. everytime I see the org's creationist propaganda I have the urge to get a shredder... Fortunately there are a lot of fine resources on evolution available on the web due to the controversy in the Bible Belt and elsewhere.. I had to read up about that a lot and now I would call it a hobby.. you just can't understand biology without evolution :). Were you baptized? What is your position now?

Interesting question...

Personally, I've thrown out God, Afterlife, Demons , anything supernatural. There's no need to be afraid of the dark.

Here we are, in a perfectly natural and immense universe. There's no 'big meaning' to life.. it's just that we have evolved as meaning-giving life-forms. Language is the prime example of the signifying that makes us human.

So give meaning then! Signify! Every minute! What I mean is: research all you can, read a book per day, immerse yourself in Art, develop an ethical code, help less fortunate human beings, study philosophy: inscribe your meaning in the stars.

And at the end.. your reaction should be like Nietzsche's Zarathustra: It has been a great ride.. let's do it again! (his philosophy of eternal recurrence.. every action has eternal meaning)

Note that this is something different than hedonism

If God Himself gave absolute proof of His existence as a Righteous and Good God, and absolute proof of the True Religion being the Watchtower..

Then I'd go back... I left because I wanted to know the Real Truth, so then I would know I had made the wrong decision.

But of course the above is quite improbable :)

So in the meantime? Atheism, Science and Evolution!

Where would we be now if there was never a concept of God?

if (for the sake of argument for those who believe in god) there was no god, and no human being who ever lived had ever come up with or even had a concept of god or a higher being.

where do you think we as human beings would be today.

what do you think our history would be like, and our future?

Interesting post, I often wondered about that as well.

Unfortunately the Believer has one serious advantage over the Unbeliever - His argument is simple. 1. Look how complex all of this is! 2. It must have been created by someone! 3. Worshop Him! Now try evolution or quantum mechanics in three sentences :)

As soon as an animal species becomes self-conscious (due to increased brain capacity, development of language etc.) - The concept of a God will be invented, I believe. And the trouble begins... 'God' is just a transcendental signifier in language: That-word-which-gives-meaning-to-All.

But IF we imagine it had never happened for some reason: no religion of course, no watchtower specifically :), but still wars I think - for territory, for sex, for power.. just like our fellow animals. I don't think it would have made any real difference.

No offense for any religious persons here.. these are just my views on the subject.

First of all thanks for the reactions to my first post. Very kind of you.

I've been struggling with the following question the last few months. It's about 'them' and 'us':

1. 'They' are absolutely sure they have chosen their own beliefs, have researched it themselves, are thinking for themselves, and that the organization is just the whole lot of people like them. So they expect you to respect their beliefs, not to attack them. They think they are following their own conscience.

2. 'We' know that behind all this stands the Watchtower Propaganda Machine. The decision to 'stay in the Truth' is never objective, always based on misinformation. The whole point of the system is letting people believe they have made the choice themselves. The organization is the hierarchy, the system of ideologies, not the brothers and sisters. They are more like victims of the system. So we feel an urge to point this out to them, and as a consequence, they think you are attacking them, and feel hurt. They don't see you are attacking the system, because as far as they are concerned, they are the system.

The problem: Attacking the system only backfires on the ones you love who are still in, the victims. The system itself remains unharmed.

So what's the moral thing to do? Just leave as a kind of statement? Point it out once, then move on? Blow up Brooklyn? Honestly I'm so fed up with this.. my conscience tells me I must help the ones I love.. but it is pointless.. I'm only hurting them...

interesting read for skeptics and believers alike.... my personal fave is the picture in the knowledge book on page 132 (i think) showing jehovah in the clouds.

if you fold the picture three ways, you see a skull in the clouds on top of a pyramid.

does watchtower literature .

Totally with Jeff on this one... I know the wt doesn't like its members being sceptical, so please at leasttry to be it when you're out!

Subliminal images = nonsense

Demon-smurfs = nonsense

Armageddon = nonsense

Critical thinking = good :)
