Welcome to JWD, TheMan! If I type fast enough I may be the first to welcome you here ;)
Isn't life wonderful through the looking-glass? As I'm on the way out myself I can advise you from personal experience... take it slooooowly. Try to fade and keep whatever relationships you want to keep (close family etc., don't count on the dubs you only see in the KH - but then why would you need them?). It's great your wife may get out as well - That would truly be a succes story. Set up a good strategy and don't hasten things.
Good luck! I'm so glad for you :D

i grew up in the wt, did my utmost to research all, saw the light of course - everyone else of my family still in.. i'm 18.. anyone else of around that age who found out by doing research?
i'd like to share some experiences.. regards,.

It wasn't me :)
I feel the fade strategy is definitely to be preferred. But as I've read more posts on this board I now realize that simply not all of us have this option :(
As for me, I'm in a relatively comfortable position.. university and social contacts there, no elder dad anymore, helped my friends out.. still a good relation with my family.. they know that I really don't believe anything of it... so this is the perfect time to get through the looking-glass.
I only wished it was like this for the others of my age as well.
Regards, and good luck on your journey

i wanted to get your thoughts on the claim that pharaoh's drowned army was discovered.
the claim comes from ron wyatt.
he seems to have a cult following and some critics to his claims.
You can ask yourself one easy question to see if this is genuine science or pseudo-science.
Does the method say: Here are the facts, what is the conclusion? - Science
Or does it say: Here's the preferred conclusion, what facts can we find to support it? - Pseudo-Science
It is the latter question that drives this 'archeological research'. The guy only wants to find the drowned army very badly... So he'll see every wheel-formed thing as evidence for it.
So what is it?

so i'm now about to be challenged on critisism of the bible.
i bumped into an old friend on myspace and since i mentioned historical critisism of the bible as one of my interests he's calling me on it.
i responded fairly dodging the question but i'm sure it's not going to be avoided at all.
No thanks. It's a pleasure to help.
I usually start looking on the Wikipedia, then follow the links to scientific/educational sites from there. You might narrow your search to the .edu domain so you will get directly to university websites. In that way you prevent yourself from being bogged down in creationist nonsense.. they can't get their crap on university pages :)
Trash them :)

yes, no or maybe....and why?
I think the response is divided over two lines:
1. Those who really researched the wt (most of us here imo) can not go back because of their conscience. You just can't promote a lie when you know it's a lie.
2. Those who didn't do any research probably still believe the lie subconsciously... and so can be tricked when disaster strikes.
I think it is fair to say that the first group consists of the ones who left over doctrinal issues, whereas the second group left because they really really wanted something 'in the world'. You can move from the second to the first group, but not from the first to the second. For the first group, there's just no way back... explaining the previous posts.
So what does this prove? Scientia ipsa potestas est. Knowledge itself is power. Research research research! Don't stay in the second group where they still control your mind!

do you still believe that yhwh from the old testament is a god of love?.
what is your opinion about the jesus of the new testament?.
i'm not asking if you believe they exist(ed)... just a character analysis based on what you read in the bible.. regards,.

I can relate to many of the things you said.. I'm also 3rd generation. Being the study-minded 'the-original-greek-says-brother' does not really help when you finally find out... although it does help you to find out in the first place. I remember making some comment about the etymology of 'diabolos' and being praised by the DO.. if only he'd known my thoughts :) As for keeping underground, I also played that game for a while.. like Morpheus, indeed. But there are no Neo's left in my cong, so I'm pulling out my cards.. to be honest I've really had enough of it... my family will absolutely not be influenced by me, my friends are out now, so I'm beginning to fade away, like a shadow. The only way to win the game is to stop playing very slowly, in my opinion. You have a right to live your own life as well.
How long do you want to play the game? Do you have any plans for the future? What will happen if you just say 'I don't believe it anymore' to your family? Please provide feedback, or you can PM me.

has anyone else noticed how you can tell who is new or fading, who was a long timer, who was never really into it, etc just from the way posts and language are structured?
i think it struck me when i heard someone say they did their utmost to leave the organization..do your utmost..not a common expression in most people's worlds so it still twigged a jw connection.
reading steve hassan's book on mind control reminded me of just how important language is in cult group membership.
Absolutely.
Language is always tied up with mythology. Mythology is ideology in narrative form.
Were you referring to my last post? - I didn't notice myself using that expression.. so I guess you are right :)
I would like to make an analysis of JW 'theocratic' language one day - should be interesting...

P.S You might be interested in reading 'Mythologies' by Roland Barthes - a classic study in how everyday, in this case French culture is vested in mythology, and mythology in language.
