  It never ceases to amaze me....

  i just came from my mom's house, where my sister was in from out of town.

  my sister tells my mom that at her meeting this morning, they announced that while jws are out and about in their dc cities, they are not to wear jeans, shorts, or t-shirts, so as to "stand out as different.

  " (guess the full-body placard reading, "we are jehovah's witnesses" would've been a little over-the-top, eh?).

  My mom responded that she hadn't heard that yet. My sister just says, "This is the first time they've said this." I really, really, really wanted to comment about it, but although I'm DF, my family doesn't know that I'm what they define as apostate, and I'm afriad they might be forced into shunning me "properly" if they ever found out. (They don't shun me now).

  I couldn't tell what my sister thought about this, because of course she wasn't going to voice it if she had any contentions about it. It just amazes me that two otherwise independent women would put up with this kind of nonesense. Neither my mom nor my sister would stand for it if their own husbands tried to tell them how to dress. I have suspicions that many in my family just go through the motions so as not to rock the boat, so that could be one explanation.

  It's one thing to set a dress code for your convention, but to tell people how to dress while they are going about their daily lives, doing nothing related to the organization, is just too audacious. They even go so far as to outlaw specific items of clothing, instead of just saying something broad like "dress modestly." (although IMO it's going too far to ever tell grown people how to dress). It's a total usurpation of personal judgment and free-thinking, and it just disgusts me!

  ok folks listed wth the credits on the film "knocking, there is a special "thank you" to anderson cooper, other than him making a positive comment about knocking,in what other ways is he responsible for the production of this film?

  what other help did he contribute toward it?

  Congratulations!

  Not to scare ya, but I got an ultrasound and was told I was having a boy... got all kinds of cute blue clothes and stuff.... then, "Congratulations! It's a GIRL!"

  ... It's a what?

  Of course, we were happy nonetheless. And it only bothered me the first couple times people commented on the cuteness of my little "boy" dressed all in blue.

  NBC News shows no integrity

  i'm pretty upset after watching the crap on msnbc last night.. they kept milking the story about their package from that psycho, constantly flashing his photos and videos on the screen--just the way he envisioned it.. repeatedly the psychological experts they interviewed told them that this course of action would only serve to encourage others.. meanwhile they interview the president of nbc news, who talked about the "careful" consideration about what to do with the contents of the package, deciding to "immediately" turn it over to investigators.

  (but apparantly not until they copied some of the videos and photos).. for their rationale on their decision to air these materials, all they could offer was, "if we didn't do it, some tabloid would have done it".

  they were the only ones that got the stuff!.

  I absolutely agree. The only reason the other stations are on their soapboxes now is because they didn't get the packet, so they didn't have the opportunity. They have an obligation to report the news, but that is a distant second priority when compared to making money. And unfortunately, "if it bleeds, it leads."

  My Mom died yesterday

  my mom passed away yesterday.

  she was a die-hard jw.

  i tried to explain why i couldn't accept certain teachings but rather than rationally consider what i had to say she chose to believe i was just "confused".

  Women's intuition

  i have always said as women we down play our intuition, when we should rely on it more.

  words i should have lived by.. several years ago i dated a guy for 2 years.

  Most of us have to learn this the hard way because if we care about somebody, we want to give him the benefit of the doubt. This happened to me once, and I convinced myself I was crazy. Now I know never to second guess my intuition.

  I agree SirNose. Case in point:

  My undergrad degree is in Social Work, and for my internship, I had to counsel kids with behavioral problems at school. One kid was a black teenage male who was getting ready to graduate high school. When I asked him how he felt about it, he told me that he was depressed about it because now he wouldn't have anything to do except hang out on the corner.

  He actually said this to me, and he was actually serious. It broke my heart.

  It wasn't that he was just choosing not make something of his life; he didn't even understand that he had options.

  People are products of their environments, and for people like this kid, they have a skewed sense of reality because it's based on whatever they see on television. We have to shield our kids from negative influences, and make sure that they have positive role models in their lives if the cycle is ever going to be broken. Unfortunately, these are the kids who grow up to have kids of their own and perpetuate the cycle, so intervention is usually needed from outside sources.

  I grew up poor, and I am thankful to my JW parents for at least shielding me from stuff like rap music and drugs. Although they discouraged me from going to college, I went to a magnet high school where the atmosphere wasn't "are you going to university" but "which university are you going to?" I credit that with my decision to go to college, and that's why I believe so strongly in making sure that we provide the right environment for our kids.

  You're right: they're not going to get the right message from most mainstream rappers and athletes, and unfortunately, probably not their parents either because that's usually where the problem originated. That's why positive black people need to be visible and vocal so that our kids can see them and realize that there are more options than what they see in rap videos.
