I dreamt of making a mini-series out of it ala HBO's Rome, can you imagine. I even picked out the soundtrack and actors... lol.

"The Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett. Made me very glad to NOT be living in 13th Century England.
That is my favourite historical fictional novel. However, it was 12th century England, not 13th. Strangely though, after reading that book, all I wanted was to live in such times... if only for excitement. Thank goodness I live in these much more interesting times!
I agree, and we have vast amounts of land that are not very arable, but are perfectly good grazing lands. Uninformed people think that meat production is an inefficient diversion of vegetable foods like corn that could be used to feed people directly, but it does not have to be that way.
Hear Hear! Been saying this a long time. I cant stand the Vegan/Fruitarian/Raw Food based argument about land allocation. The problem is often political, economic (lol same thing) or overpoopulation[sic].

C.) Just like high oil prices have made people reevaluate their usage of oil and gas, higher meat costs only will benefit them as well as Americans eat far too much fat and animal products.
Amercans eat for too much High Fructose Corn Syrup (Triglyceride and Cholestreol spike anyone?) and MSGs(mmm can't get enough! its like my appetite never turns off!). Humans evolved on a largely animal product based diet with only seasonal intake of vegetation... the Holocene has only been for 10,000 years, and we do not digest starch either... we lack the enzyme Amalyse.

If we starve the Saudis for a while maybe they will play ball.
We dont live in the 3rd world...but we feed them...and ourselfs.
The "Saudis" (only the elite are really Saudis, the rest are simply Arabs) are starving... the large majority of them that is. There is no work, and there is no future in sight for them. They live in a desert and only the vast energy inputs of oil have allowed them to multiply their population in such numbers, without the needed concurrent social development.
Oil feeds them, and "ourselfs"[sic].

Men: what do you want us women to know to understand you better?
by LouBelle inus women have always told you what we want, how to be treated, now it's your turn.
what do men want us to know about you?

Call me in 20 years Mincan. I remember reading the same book you have read.... that guy didnt have a clue.
I have read no book. It's personal observation. In many ways (ways of relating, desires, thought processes, etc) I am the stereotypical female, which has lead me to believe these things are socially constructed in my personal experience. I do not feel like most males. It could be related to my high level of intuition which is a result of my neurological make-up. Perhaps its because I am more "process oriented" rather than "goal oriented" as a previous poster has stated. Perhaps the norm is for males to be quite different.
I do not relate to the jokes males make about females. I don't relate to them. Sorry. It's probably why up until recently I have felt unable to connect to females, but no, the opposite is true!

Consumption and Population are both connected to resources.

Men and Women, besides some important differences of anatomy and certain brain processes, are essentially the same. The rest is acculturation. Gender roles are a social construct. I deteste them and it's all good. I've found the ones that understand this.

The relation is the belief that there are no shortage of resources. It's true in the context of population. Only 100 million humans, then yea we don't need to worry again for a while.

There is no shortage of oil, food, or anything else on this planet, it's more that we have a surplus of greed.
Okay, by that logic I will say, we have no shortages of resources, but an overabundance of people... lets kill off 5.5 billion of them so we can use the resources as much as we want.
Soil (for the time frames we care about) is a finite resource, we've used half of it up on the north american continent since we arrived and leeched all the nutrients... without oil inputs via fertilisers and pesticides/herbicides, we will expect crop yields to drop dramatically just as we don't need this to happen. There is only a limited amount of phosphorus left for fertilisers as well... really to say what you have shows your utter ignorance... try reading "The Fatal Harvest Reader: The Tragedy of Modern Agriculture" or anything on the subject really. Try to research terms like "diminishing returns" "energy returned over energy invested" "Second Law of Thermodynamics" and "basic physics" and you'll be well on your way.
Meanwhile, in Saudia Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, etc, gas is a buck a gallon, and they live lives of complete luxury. Go pick on them for a change.
Saudi Arabia has half its population under the age of 25, and there are no jobs for them. This is why they are causing trouble in Iraq, etc, they have no place in their society. The corrupt usupers The Saudi Royals have taken all the wealth and put it into this complete luxury you speak of. just like the US, only the top percentile of people live it.

The entire US must change to CFL bulbs by 2016! It's the law! Good or Bad?
by AK - Jeff inwhat the hell ever happened to 'free choice'?
it is the law that we must change - no choice.
yet look at the new disaster this creates!

.....and there is no such thing as good law when you want to be lawless. However, next time your house is burgled notice that it is the good law that protects your interests.
Not wanting to be governed has nothing to do with being an asshat.
