I would say all religions qualifies as a cult but some are more damaging then others. Even some main stream companies functions as cults. I would say a better word to describe a religion is meme (mind virus) and like viruses some are more damaging then others and some spread with more ease then others. So for me the Jehovah's Witnesses are just an other meme that causes damage to the host. BTW the Catholic Church is a "cult" (meme) and yes it does kill some of it's hosts (the spread of AIDS and the use of condoms).

Is the Jehovahs Witnesses organization really a cult?
by Etude inim sure the question has been brought up before on this board and i imagine that for many of us the answer is patent.
however, i recently saw a documentary on pbs regarding the mormons and it stated categorically that the church of jesus christ of latter day saints is not a cult.
given that it has its own set of strangeness and history of revision as has the wtbts, could it also (the jw) be considered a main stream, although minor religion?.

Anti-christ,
Gotta love that name.
Yeah I see where you were coming from. I think some people think that because you don't believe in or worship the Biblical Deity then you have no business in celebrating his son's birthday and they conveniently forget that the celebration is borrowed from the Biblical Deities enemies the Pagans.
I think you make a very valid point and if a person wants to charge us with hypocrisy they should consider the pagan origins before they go around trying to pin hypocrisy, delusionalism, and lack of integrity on us.
Thank you.

New Light: Don't hold hands during prayers
by RR infrom the watchtower november 15 study edition.. 19 when we are being represented in public prayer, we need to display reverential "fear of god.
" (1 pet 2:17) there may be a proper time and place for some actions that would be inappropriate at a christian meeting.
(eccl 3:1) for instance, suppose someone sought to have all in a group link arms or hold hands during prayer.

This reminds me of the time when me and my wife where "counseled" to stop reading in the same bible and WT that we should each have our own and when my wife was told that she loved me more then she loved Jehober aka the WT and that was a big no no.

I celebrate Christmas and I could care less about all the arguments about the imaginary son of god's birthday, winter solstice, roman pagan origins ad nauseum.
It is a happy, fun celebration during an otherwise gloomy winter.
Does ANYONE really want to be turned and twisted into a doctrinal preztel over this? I don't know anyone who does.
I agree it just seemed that the person who started this tread was trying to make a point that atheist who celebrate christmas are hypocritical all I was trying to say is that christmas is no more about the son of god then halloween, an other "pagan" holiday that I enjoy. So what's the difference between an atheist who celebrates and a Christians?

I'm a atheist and I do celebrate Christmas. The Irony of it is that even if I do not believe in god or that is son was born on the 25 of December I still celebrate, some christian might find this to be hypocritical so be it but the real irony is that Jesus was not born on the 25 (even if you believe he is the son of god or not the fact does not change) so every christian who celebrates Christmas is celebrating the winter solstice in reality, Christmas is mix with full "pagan" rituals.

Occult vs. Cult
by God_Delusion inoccult = "the term is also used as a label given to a number of magical organisations or orders, the teachings and practices taught by them, and to a large body of current and historical literature and spiritual philosophy related to this subject .
" - wikipedia.
cult = "scholars and non-academic researchers who use the term do so from explicitly critical perspectives which focus on the relationship between cult groups and the individual people who join them.

interesting, I mostly was in french speaking congs, the words are different we say sect when it comes to cults and cult is use to describe worship.
This can be a form of mind control of course using the two words together to cause confusion or implant a "reflex" when you hear it it causes a reaction even if the two words do not mean the same thing. Or it just could be that the JW do not shit and just pull things out of their ass.

It's funny how a lot of us guys do that after leaving or fading must be a "take the power back" thing, I grow one every winter now, you know it gets cold in my part of the woods in winter, protects the skin.

Cool. Like a spiritual experience. Reminds me of the movie 'the big blue', w jean reno, i believe.
Yes you can qualify this as "spiritual". When I hit 80 feet I feel that i am in a altered state of mind, of course it's the change in pressure and all the other stuff that goes with free diving but it is still a very intense experience.
The big blue, 'le grand bleu' is with Jean Reno.
