My poor stepdaughter lived in Port Sulphur LA for 2 years. She seemed to be fine, but she broke down Saturday night. She is worried about her friends, in her words she is worried that they have "been swept away by the hurricane". I broke down with her, hugged her, and promisd to keep searching the listings online, like her mom is, until we find out what has happened. Her maternal grandmother and her boyfriend and family are okay, and rebuilding, now they are in Missippi.
I cannot even imagine how those that have family in New Orleans area, and Missippi etc, not knowing where they are. I just wish I could gather you all up and give you a hug...
I don't know what else to say...
maybe they'll take a cue from president bush and get involved?
?
I don't doubt that there will be some help there. There are a good number of congregations there. My stepdaughters grandmother was a witness for quite a while down in Port Sulphur, LA before she was DF'd.
BUT, the point is, are they going to do it without an end in mind of glorifying the WTS? They SHOULD have a link on their site talking about how to donate. That way, they can get funds QUICKER to help in the relief efforts.
me and the kids went to rent movies and noticed that there were long lines of people waiting for gas.
we live in shreveport/bossier louisiana about five hours north of new orleans.
we do have tons of evacuees here and so i understand it is going to be busier here than usual.. people were breaking lines to get gas tonite, and you could feel the tension in the air.
I have been trying to find ways to cut back on gas anyway, and have been planning on getting a bicycle for short errands, etc...I figured that if I do this, it will save me anywhere from 8 to 10 a week in gas.
We are cutting out a lot of silly little extras too...like, no going to mcdonalds a few times after school for the little cheap ice cream cones. They are only a buck each, and was a nice treat for the kids, and there is a playland...but ain't gonna happen that much any more...just cannot afford to waste gas. McDonald's is only 3 miles away...but since I only get like 15 mpg on a good day, I don't feel it would be wise.
I am just waiting for other stuff to go up as well....eek...milk already went up last year, if it does again...damn...we will be switching to powdered milk. That can be much cheaper went bought in bulk.
Tonight on one of the gas runs I had my sister and son with me. I told them...damn this is expensive. But at least we are lucky enough to just have to cut back. One of my neighbors doesn't even have a vehicle...and there will be some people that will have to make a decision between eating lunch at work or buying gas so they can get to work each day. That is a hard choice.
And thank goodness we are not in LA, MS or AL.
okay, let's say you find yourself in the big easy.
no lights, no phone, no motorcar, not a single luxury.. you have kids, you have yourself.
everyone is hungry, and thirsty, and drinking the water will kill you (even walking around in it isn't real safe.).
I agree that taking food, water and basic necessities is very different. Afterall, you think that stuff is going to be good by the time Walmart and win dixie can re open? nooooo....let those that can use it take it. That will be a few less in the food line for a day or so.
The ones that should be shot are the ones going in and taking the watches, tvs, shit that is not necessary..the scumbags that are getting violent and stealing vehicles from those trying to help out (like the poor guy driving the van for the nursing home...some thugs took it from him at gunpoint.)
If I had to walk in one of these stores to get water and food for my kids...I would do it in a heartbeat.
i've never been there myself, but every single person being shown on the news is black.
wading through the streets, stranded on rooftops, etc.
i'm not sure if the media is just focusing on certain areas of new orleans or if it's a predominantly african american city.. the only footage i've seen other than this has been mardi gras and that consists mostly of tourists.
I kept saying yesterday: why didn't these people LEAVE????? I was really irked.
Then, I watched some of the interviews, and read some of the interviews...a lot of people couldn't leave. They didn't have a way out of the city. For those of us that have been to New Orleans, it is a bit difficult to get out if you don't have a car or cannot pay to leave on a bus, etc. I was told that the government was offering to bus people out for free, but I bet there was some percentage of people that were not aware of it.
There definately were the stubborn...they were fools to stay. And, you know, I really think it would be foolish to try to build the city as it was. I think it is high time to think about possibly moving back the city, and filling in some of the area.
It just drives me crazy when you see this kind of devastation...the loss of life could have been minimized if people had listened. I hope we learn a lot from this one and make better civil engineering decisions in the future with our coastal communities...
Valis...I hope your aunt is okay. My stepkids grandmother was in Port Sulphur, but left. The house she was in and the house across the street where they used to live is gone. They lost a lot of toys and things...who cares about that. I don't like their grandmother, but I am so relieved she is okay.

Well...I got about $20 of gas this afternoon at 2.71 at Sam's club...but then, my husband came home later and asked me to fill up the van and the car because it is just going to get so out of hand...so I go back out again...thank goodness it had only gone up 1 cent since the afternoon.
All in all, I spent a total 106 on gas between both vehicles today. But we both expect gas to get up to $3 in the near future, so we had to get it cheap while we could. There were fairly long lines when I went, but it wasn't too crazy.
What WAS crazy though is the difference in price at different stations. 2.71 was the lowest I saw in Plano, but I drove by others at $2.90...and at one intersection, there was one station that had gas for 2.71 and diesel for 2.69, but across the street the gas was 2.89 and the diesel 2.49...go figure.
.
i know most of those you in the the path of katrina probably cannot even see this right now...but i hope you are all okay.. my stepkids used to live in port sulphur, la...thank god they don't any more, but their grandmother still does.
i just got off the phone with their mom, and her mother and brother are okay...they are up somewhere safe in missippi, but their house is completely gone...i hear that whole parish is in really bad shape, as bad or even worse than new orleans.. i see bryan is safe...and if any of you know of others that are in that area, if you know they are safe, please let us know.. maybe this latest hurricane will convince la and other areas to rethink developement in such flood zones...so next time the devastation in loss of life and property isn't so extreme.. i hope you and your families are all okay..

No, I wouldn't...if I had to get something THAT small, I would just get a bicycle and attach an xtracycle to it:
http://www.mealsmatter.org .
this is a free site, and has a really cool meal planning tool.
you can add recipes, or select the ones from their database and plan out meals for the week..and then add the ingredients to a shopping list.
This weekend I am going to ask each of my kids to pick which recipe they would like to appear on the meal plan. It is sad, but sometimes I have a hard time remember who likes what, hahah.
Maybe using this I can assign cook nights to the husband, my son and my sister....now THAT would be sweet hahah
=)
