OK- by looking for screwed up renderings, I think we all draw attention away from the really disturbing part of this drawing. The smug smiles as age old cathedrals, priceless art and millions of lives are snuffed out. Now thats twisted. And its not subliminal- its the authors intent. The look on their faces is like- yup well, they had it coming didn't they- too bad for them, so glad I have this great crown and get to hang out with this guy.

Ok I had an ah-ha moment regarding the Good Samaritan parable. Like many of you have said- it was all about religious intolerance. That's why specific emphasis was placed on the profession/religious affiliatation of the questioner (teacher of the moasic law), and the passers-by (priest, levite, samaritan).
But no religion will teach it that way. It doesn't help anyones cause to be the "one and only truth". The WT alluded to it- said its about cultural, religious, and national differenes- but really, its about religious differences and tolerance.
Then the article makes a quick fade to the scripture about "working what is good mainly to those related in the faith" (If you read the context- this is about shepherding others in the fold- not about mercy, compassion or kindness) and a parting shot to be very careful when showing mercy to people not in the congregation.
What a way to twist a very important set of concepts!!

Not an elders daughter. But guilt is universal. Learn the truth about the truth. Read this site- and pick up a few of the books that different posters recommend. Only when you can see clearly what is going on will the guilt start to subside. And guilt is very destructive. Besides, once you actually get what is going on- meetings can be a little fun (in a twisted sort of way.) I'm very happy I figured it out before I had the opportunity to mess up my little one too much.

Help needed: Killing the 'The light gets brighter' argument?
by jah1914 inso after the revelation study last night where the paragraph was talking about how russell's interpertation of revelation basically didn't work and got discarded, my wife comments with the same old,"the light gets brigther, that's why i respect fds because at least they will change when they figure out something is wrong.
" (insert vomit here) afterwards, me and the book study conductor(i have to at least give him credit, he is someone i can talk to freely about my questions and he has not,as of yet, turned me in) got into a discussion of what 'the light gets brighter' really means.

The difference between the FDS and a math professor is what's at stake and how seriously the discussion is taken. If you want to study a math problem from different angles- have at it. Its scholarly playtime that helps you develop your logical, reasoning and conceptualizing skills.
The FDS is different because-
1-The seriousness of the conversation. Although later the fds will admit something was a mistake- they will never admit this at the time- and heaven help you if you beg to differ with their approach. This is no collegial debating society, or even a group of professionals taking different approaches to a problem- It is "their way" or the Highway. And the penalty for disagreeing is not speaking to your friends and family ever again.
2- What is at stake. When the FDS says that the end is close, or near, or coming soon, the reaction of the faithful (encouraged by the heirarchy) is to delay receiving needed medical treatment, quit jobs, sell houses, not go to college. In other words- the FDS is having an impact on serious life decisions (not some simple math professor trying to push his students). The reaction of the faithful to mandates about blood, health care, college, child rearing- often have life long significant emotional (and sometimes life or death) consequences.
Overall- the comparison of a math professor to a "way of life" is oversimplified and demeaning.

I have to tell you- this whole subject makes me very disappointed in myself. I read some of the early Russel writings over 15 years ago and had the obvious reactions to them (What!?! This guy was crazy!?! This doesn't look anything like "the truth", this guy was a "wack-job")
However, I didn't let myself connect the dots to question the appointment of a faithful and discreet slave that could tell me what to do in every aspect of life. The FDS teaching is really the foundation for making a person accept unwise, unsafe and illogical mandates. The defense mechanisms are well instilled. (Don't question, the light will get brighter for you, probably you just don't understand, etc.)
Don, thanks to you and others like you (Ray Franz, Randy Watters, etc) for helping the rest of us connect the dots.

I couldn't agree more with the sentiments on this thread. The current drumming about not going to college isn't just bad advice- its dead wrong!!!
One single mother was putting her daughter through college and the elders were giving her grief about it. She told them- "Will you support me and my daughter for the rest of our lives? No? Then you have no say in our decision." Although an elder at the time- I wanted to go and high-five her. Meddling is one thing- meddling that will damage someone is something else!!

It strikes me that the concept of mercy- specifically the need for God to show mercy to us "miserable sinners"- is yet another control mechanism that religion has used for centuries. If you feel a sense of indebtedness and need for mercy that you can only get by satisfying the demands of the heirarchy then you are very easy to control.
That said- I think the practice of mercy by and between humans is one of the things that makes us human. It is a principle that should be taught, learned and practiced.
But- a merciful person will never let the person he has shown mercy to feel a sense of guilt and indebtedness.

Wife vented tonight!
by 5thGeneration inmy babe (wife's approved nickname) finally vented today because it was her birthday, which we couldn't acknowledge, and she feels really emotional that she never had a chance at a real career, may have wasted her life, etc.... she may be coming around a bit but now this is really uncharted territory!.
ironically i'm getting through to her but it's scaring the bajeebers out of me now!

When you talk to him, tell him it changed my life too. I'll write him and tell him myself one of these days. Took a while for me to work up the courage to post here- writing to Ray is the next hurdle. Its good to hear that he is still out there making the case. I was a kid when he experienced what he experienced. But I always wondered about him- even years later at Bethel. What could make someone on the GB decide to leave it all behind?? What could someone that far on the inside do to get so far on the outs with the org that they would hunt him down and DF him for eating with someone. (Even when I was 10 that sounded fishy.) The curiosity eventually killed the cat.... and here I am.
