NIV here.
To get a deeper look at things I like to go to biblegateway.com and see the different translations together.
I also like to look at a Greek interlinear.

The UN is on the verge of banning religion - JWs favorite rumor
by VM44 inthe un is on the verge of banning religion.. why is this rumor constantly being brought up by the jws?.
the un does not have the power to ban religion, such an act would go against its very charter and its declaration of human rights.. many of the member nations are islamic and would never vote to ban religion as it would undermine their own very existence.. so the idea that the un would or could ban or even consider banning religion is unrealistic.
never going to happen.. but the jws have been whispering that "the un is going to ban religion" for decades....why?

The UN will not ban religion. They sponsor it, and are particularly close to the Bahai. There is even a chapel in the UN building.
Spreading urban legends is not a convincing way to demonstrate you have "the truth". -

What prompted the whopper of all Flip Flops? (Sodom & G. resurrection)
by Open mind inin pre-studying my watchtower for this sunday, (with mary's assistance on v's thread of course), i was reminded of something i've wondered about re: the whole "will the residents of sodom & gomorrah be resurrected?
" question.. to my knowledge, this one holds the watchtower record for most number of flip-flops.
please correct me if i'm wrong.

I have pondered this one and even have most of the literature containing this strobe light. I would go with the "make it up as we go" scenario.
I loved the irony in the analogy of the lighthouse, as a warning to stay away from something dangerous. -

Most current teachings and beliefs
by bite me inhi.
does anyone know if there is a single place that list all the current beliefs and teachings of the jw's.
i like to have something i can compare history with to have something to fall back on to show people changes in the belief that they are being taught.

This is an interesting proposition. I mentioned to my study conductor about Jesus returning invisibly in 1914, which seems to be standard WT doctrine, and he thought that Jesus did not actually return, but simply sat down on a throne.
My JW has been active for less than 10 years, so maybe the return has been toned down and enthronement ramped up. Some of this doctrine appears to subtly shift over time and makes it hard to pin down a change.
Perhaps those cynical suggestions that they make it up as they go along has some merit. :-( -

Drinking & Jehovah's Witnesses
by minimus inyou know, i knew a lot of bethelites and every one of them loved their booze.

What is Heaven?
by Robert7 inbased on my research the last few months, i think i realize what heaven is.
this is not a new concept, and i'm sure many have come to this conclusion... .
thousands of years ago, the belief was an 'earth-centric' universe.

Sandy Eggo county had very warm weather, then a sudden unexpected storm that dumped snow in the nearby mountains. Hundreds of motorists are trapped as major roads closed, I-8 and SR 78.
Today it is sunny and clear again. -

Watchtower Question from readers= Slams hunting??? Why???
by Witness 007 ineven though the bible does not condemn hunting watch them push their personal opinion and trun it into watchtower law.. watchtower dec 1 2007 p.31 "how should christians view hunting?
} "the bible does not condemn hunting or fishing.." {great leave it there..no need to push personal thoughts on brothers, right?
} ".....the apostles who were fisherman were likely gratified by a good catch.

Apparently, Jehovah did some hunting on one recorded occasion when he sought to kill Moses.
24 It happened on the way at a lodging place, that Jehovah met him and wanted to kill him.
25 Then Zipporah took a flint, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet; and she said,
"Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me."
26 So he let him alone. Then she said, "You are a bridegroom of blood," because of the circumcision.
Exodus 4:24-26
Although Jehovah did not kill Moses on this hunting trip, he did get satisfied by a choice cut of meat.
