Yeah, and how effective are they with the message? Do you think the average person walking out of a Rite Aid Drug store with an ice cream cone can explain what JWs believe the Kingdom of God is???? All they know is that we don't take blood or celebrate Xmas. Great job guys.

Is Jdubs practice of Teenage baptism really any better than Infant Baptism?
by blkblk13 inso i was thinking the other day about how the jdubs always mock the catholics for baptizing infants who can't make a true commitment to god so the sybol of dedication is empty.
well, as anyone who's been in the org knows there is a culture of pressuring teenagers to get baptized.
if u r over 12yo it is a question that is constantly asked.

NO! It is much worse. They tell you not to get married as a teenager, yet encourage a decision that potentially can have devastating effects on you and your family for the rest of your life. Stupid.

Why I will NEVER be an elder again
by stillajwexelder inso the po confirmed what many on this board already know.
at latest round of co to elders meeting, the co quoted from the society outline.
any elder or ms who encourages college for his kids or others or who allows his children to go to college will no longer qualify.. he then asked if i was going to take the cos encouragement and reach out again to be an elder and get my hours on the ministry up.. i replied "i will never be an elder again - i strongly approve of further education and college and have been through college myself.

Billy the X - just love your posts. I was an elder's wife who absolutely insisted my son go to college. He got his BA and we never really got any flak about it. However, this was a few years ago before the recent crack-downs. Also we live in a metropolitan, affluent area and most of the elders in our cong were pretty tolerant unintrusive guys. Even if they weren't, having been denied education myself, I never would have crippled my son. Interestingly, he is the only one in the family who still attends a few meetings. So there you go.

Martin Luther Sounds like He's talking about the WTBTS in the 1500's!
by AuntBee inusually i'm just a lurker.
i'm a chrirstian concerned for a jw teen, and wanting to understand what he's going through, and where he's coming from i don't usually post, but this morning i came upon this while reading from the sermons of martin luther , volume 1. he's speaking about luke 21:28.. "the godless fanatical preachers are to be censured who in their sermons deprive people of these words of christ and faith in them, who desire to make people devout by terrifying them and who teach them to prepare for the last day by relying upon their good works as satisfaction for their sins.
here despair, fear and terror must remain and grow and with it hatred, aversion and abhorrence for the coming of the lord, and enmity against god be established in the heart; for they picture christ as nothing but a stern judge whose heart must be appeased by works, and they never present him as the redeemer, as he calls and offers himself, of whom we are to expect that out of pure grace he will redeem us from sin and evil.. such is always the result where the gospel is not rightly proclaimed.

Thank you for that Aunt Bee. The Governing Body certainly does maintain their control through fear and intimidation, and in the process alienate their followers from the concept of a loving and forgiving God.

Which would be easier to defend, JWs or Mormons?
by undercover inwhenever i ponder on the beliefs and practices of the mormon church, i wonder how anyone can belief such rubbish.
even when i was an active jw i looked at mormons as down right kooky, what with their special underwear, the book of mormon, the american indians being isrealites, the tablets, etc, etc, etc.
i was glad as a kid that i wasn't mormon because at least as a jw we could drink sodas.... even after i discovered that i was in a f'd up religion and made my way out, i still see mormons as so out there, that there's no way you can defend their beliefs, yet so many people become or remain mormons.. when i compare mormon beliefs with jw beliefs, it seems easier to disprove or discount mormon beliefs vs jw ones.

some quirks of the DC talks...
by metaspy inhere is a run down of some special things i noticed at the district convention.. i probably took better notes now than when i used to go as a jw.. however, my notes now are mostly "stupid" things that they say on stage.

From the fringes to the outside...
by Amy10606 ini am new here, i thought i would give a short overview of why i am here.
i was baptized at 14. even at that age i had a lot of questions that were shuffled aside by the elders or just avoided all together.
i really felt like i was doing the right thing, i was born into a large family with a suprising track record of no immediate defectors.

Welcome Amy! There are many here in their first year or so of venturing out. A little traumatic at first, but it is really good you and your husband are on the same page. Life will get easier and better as you go along. It takes guts when the rest of your family and friends are in. The board is here to support and listen -

Happy Birthday Grace! Perhaps we should just turn those numbers around 81 to 18. You are so young at heart.
btw, for the very first time I just sent a birthday present to someone today. It felt good. Strange, but good.
