My picks, some with partial lyrics:
The Witness Song by Nick Cave
"Now, who will be the witness
When you're all to blind to see"Religion by P.I.L
Christianity is Stupid by Negativland
I'm Not Jesus by The RamonesNever Go Back by Camper Van Beethoven
Leper Messiah by Metallica
Marvel at his trick, need your Sunday fix
Blind devotion came, rotting your brain
Chain, chain
Join the endless chain, taken by his glamour
Fame, fameInfection is the game, stinking drunk with power
We see
Time for lust, time for lie
Time to kiss your life goodbye
Send me money, send me green
Heaven you will meet
Make a contribution
And you’ll get a better seat
Bow to leper messiah
Save Yourself by Hemi"You self righteous shit,
Why don't you just,
Save Yourself, Save Yourselfwish i had that song on hand, the whole song is amazing.
Fuck Armageddon, This is Hell by Bad Religion
they hide behind their lies that they're helping everyone.
in the end the good will go to heaven up above,
the bad will perish in the depths of hell.
how can hell be any worse when life alone is such a curse?
fuck armageddon, this is hell.
we're living in the denouement of the battle's gripping awe,
so what's the use of being good to satisfy them all?
how could hell be any worse? life alone is such a curse!
fuck armageddon, this is hell.
Spiritual Law by D.I."Confess your evils to the man
he'll do everything he can
don't go to mass you'll go to hell
we'll all be there it'll be swell
.... it's such a game
ive seen better shows
on my tv
they'll say the world's winding up
satans fire is coming up
don't be hold your breath
you'll die just like the rest
.... no where to run and hide
tried to get away you'll be fried
you only got one chance left
on your knees sip the wine chew the wafer...
spiritual law, no way,
i wanna see christ today
spiritual law, no way
i wanna see christ today -

Specific banned shows, songs, etc...?
by AllAlongTheWatchtower ini know the society tells people not to listen to rock n roll cause its from teh satan, not to watch r rated movies because they're "worldly", etc.
but i was wondering if folks had any specific instances where one song, one show, one movie, or whatever was singled out as being particularly 'evil', and banned on an individual basis?
i was never a jw, but was in the worldwide church of god...the two are rather similar, i've seen many (and made quite a few myself) comparisons on the board; and i can remember as a child that every once in a while certain things would get brought up as being more evil and worldly than others.. examples of specific bans:.

some elder idiot gave a local needs talk about the harms of music and named a bunch of bands to avoid like the red hot chili peppers, the cure, essentially anything that was alternative around 1991. it turned out he got the list of band names from his son for this talk. his son, was into gangster rap, so he just made a list of bands he didn't like. and like the idiot elder he was, w/o research, he went for it.
i almost walked out...this was the same ass who when no one would raise their hands instantly at the watchtower study would say things like, 'didn't anybody study the watchtower yet?'.
i started getting myself to the hall, on my scooter, instead of getting a ride so i could leave if he was doing the watchtower or giving a talk.
it's a good thing them thar jehovers don't git educamated or theyz might thunk for themselfs.
oh, my dad studied the bible with this weird dude who used to hang out and play his boom box while us 8 and 9 year olds would play soccer on the street...the guy was 18 or something and a little 'off'. one day, before my dad started the study, jim said, listen to this, and he played the recently released 'runnin' with the devil' by van halen. i was immediately taken in and thought it was the best thing ever. my dad freaked and told him never to play that again.
that song still means a lot to me...it was the beginning of being saved by music, especially when i found out about punk rock when i was 14 and that there were people who had as much anger in them as i did. i would listen to college radio in my headphones all night while i slept, and we were told over and over never to do that by the congregation b/c you couldn't control what was going in your mind.

this topic reminded me. i was on the phone a few nights ago with an old friend and she wanted to take her son to the mall and invited a girl his age to go with them.
the mother freaked out and didn't want to 'encourage' the kids to be together.
my friend told me about how she explained it was innocent, etc., they were 14.
anyway, psycho mom is definitely setting her daughter up to be the KHJW slut w/ that attitude. and it felt so good to hear b/c that part of my life is so far from me.
i remember having a vespa w/ The Birthday Party sticker on it, nick cave's original band.
i got crap for that b/c it advocated pagan birthday parties.
i got pulled into the elder's room b/c someone witnessed me wearing a t-shirt with a man smoking a cigarette on it....it was a nick cave shirt and the cigarette was small.
the counsellings re: my hair, my sideburns, djing and playing possibly satanic music, going to concerts where worldly people are....all the running commentary on every aspect of my life and everything i cared about, music, film, writing.
fortunately, the books i was reading, literary fiction, wasn't a factor since most jws are pretty illiterate when it comes to reading for fun.
then i was writing for a film webzine and they couldn't shut the hell up about every movie i was reviewing, questioning if they were films a christian should see. since it was film festival coverage, none of the films had MPAA ratings yet, which most people don't realize is a lobbying process in itself....so one film rated-r could be someone in the MPAA having a beef with a studio exec, etc. the idiocy of the WTBTS buying into the rating system of the united states which is completely flawed is pathetic.
when i started getting flack for my film writing, i lost it...had enough, was completely done and started a literary webzine and wrote violent erotic stories. i wrote those as a big FU to the years and years of constant speculation on how christian i wasn't being. they finally cracked the nut. my sponge was over saturated and i was fed up.
anyway, even writing those stories was giving into being influenced by 'them'...and it's been years since i even thought about it and my craft of writing has been tamed down and explores more subtle themes. but when my old friend brought up her experience, i had to laugh at myself b/c it's just a world that i don't even know anymore. the world where i went to see the thrill kill kult and had an instant elders meeting a week later, while they wouldn't even talk to me about the other tragedies in my life b/c it had nothing to do with keeping the congregation "clean".
oh, a friend of mine in a band got written up in a newspaper, and he said, 'god bless america' in a joking manner for beers and women. he got the running commentary on how horrible that was to say.
i said, he should've asked if she read my article on the church of satan presenting black christmas in the same newspaper.
we had a laugh.
it's sooo nice to be beyond this.
btw, i was talking to an ex-jw tonite at a bar and he said that prince wasn't a wit anymore. i haven't heard anything on that and i remember recently hearing he's taking time off to study the bible with the wits or something. anyone hear about this?
if marilyn manson ever became a witness, no if nick cave became a witness, i'd die. he used to have a fanzine that was designed like the watchtower and said 'announcing nick caves...." somethign or other. they go for way too much money on ebay now, i should've bought them when they were $6.

"Eventually the founder of the board parted ways with the Watchtower when the elders admonished him for asking too many questions."
it's so damn pathetic. didn't the apostle paul say to keep questioning and digging for the truth. i feel like the governing body and elders are the ones acting exactly like the jewish religious leaders who jesus condemned for making everyone wash up to their elbows and for being a burden to the people.
what's even more amazing is they can't see that application to themselves.

Will I Be Breaking Any Laws?
by smellsgood ini intend in the future (when i get a cam and can post all the hijinks online) to infiltrate a "meeting" of a certain religious organization which will remain anonymous (no guessing!).
now, i need to know if there are any laws governing the er "interruption" of a religious gathering?
for example, if i ask a bunch of akward hard to answer questions at inappropriate times?

when you have a chance, watch the documentary 'kurt & courtney' and see how the director confronts courtney love as well as the part where he gets on stage where she's being honored and starts asking hard questions about accusations of kurts death...and the camera man has a panic attack. also, check out michael moore's films. 'roger & me' was pretty good. if they wanted to be hard asses about it, they could get you on trespassing....always remember to keep filming, even when they say to turn it off....pretend you've turned it off and turn it back on right away to get the action as best you can, especially if you're getting kicked out. and it depends your geographic location. if you're in a city, urban area, cops will probably be more lenient, or not even show up. if you're in a small town, they have less to do and might enjoy writing you up. good luck. oh, another idea, get a film permit to shoot outside the kh, just on the sidewalk, and let them know you won't block any street traffic, etc. film permits are really cheap if you tell them you're a film student and it's only a couple of people in the crew....just make sure they don't want to assign a police officer to the shoot. then plead innocent that you thought the permit was for inside use as well. if you haven't shot that much footage or have never been in a situation like that, i also suggest filming other things like political rallies, or protests, get in people's faces a bit so you get a feel for what works and what doesn't in situations that can become tense. oh, another one, watch 'da ali g show', it's borat's tv clips.

my old roommate and family friend and jw killed himself after listening to skinny puppy for two days in his bedroom with the door locked. i hadn't seen him for a couple of years, or much of the family for that matter b/c i had gotten married and moved. when i went to the house of mourning, they told me he was listening to skinny puppy and they threw out all the cds. blaming skinny puppy partially for his suicide. what a joke. i'm interviewing skinny puppy next week for a newspaper article to come out in june. it's in the biggest newspaper in our area...hopefully they'll happen upon it somehow. right now, still listening to a lot of nick cave, skinny puppy's latest release for research, and it ain't that bad, i got into a death angel freak out the other night, so i also pulled out napalm death. other great bands: munly and the lee lewis harlots slim cessna's auto club ministry anything w/ billy childish in it jonathan richman...oh, check out this great article on him. ;) Jonathan Richman article

Assembly Headache
by WTWizard inhave you ever noticed that at the end of the a$$emblies, you always seem to have a headache?
and this is above and beyond the one that you might get during a stressful day at work.
people seem to get them during the assemblies.

from what i've read, our minds are most susceptible to accepting ideas when we're tired and sleepy....thus sleep deprivation for interrogation and brainwashing.
w/ assemblies, i feel it's the same, yet subtle. for attendants, volunteers, etc., it's, get your ass up at 5am and leave @ 7pm during district assemblies...dose while the monotone goes on and on.
the last assembly i went to, this horrid self righteous lady talked about how her husband started hanging out with people at work and she kept urging him to stop (sounded like a nagger), and brought the elders in on it (i would've divorced her right there) and he didn't stop and finally they ended up separating and getting a divorce and now he's disfellowshipped.
it was obvious there was way more to the story, but she got her day to shine w/ her pathetic experience and everyone clapped. that's another thing that freaked me out is the clapping even though half the crowd doesn't know what they're clapping for
i told my wife, 'she sounds like she was a bitch', and my wife was clapping and i wasn't clapping and she said, 'i know', and i said, 'why are you clapping for her then'. she said, 'i don't know what to do' and i said, 'just don't clap'.
oh, and for the last three years that i went to assemblies, xanax was my best friend...get that stoned feeling w/o smelling like alcohol, write short stories in your notebook and it looks like you're taking notes. i'd get some good writing done @ assemblies...especially when i'd get a whiff of pheromone from a eligible hot single sister in a flower dress cruising with her friends to score that trophy jw husband who will probably never go down on her and she'll never get the big 'o' (not referring to oprah)....the magic i could work on those girls. eh, uhm. sorry, off track.
even funnier, the last time i went to a meeting about four years ago, one of those once a year get talked into going ones, the suit jacket i wore was the same one i wore to a film event and i forgot to take the clove cigarettes out of the pocket. there was a moment of panic when i felt the box, b/c of the ingrained belief system, then i laughed to myself.
anyway, great post re: assemblies...thanks for the memories.

KNOCKING.ORG Trailer/ DVD Wreaks of Misrepresentations
by sf inexcruciating to my sensibilities.. that is what it felt like watching this trailer.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oj4cs4n9zka.
it makes absolutely no sense that jws expend so much energy, in every way, to keep their very ill "loved one" alive (excluding transfusions and organ transplants).
then utter such insanity as "the 'thing' is we have the resurrection to look forward to if it doesn't "go well"".. if that is true, and you believe it wholeheartedly, why expend all the energy, in this wicked system of things that jehovah god is going to destroy...soon, so that you will inherite a "new system", to keep him alive in such a 'system'?.

jehovah's witness article on the sf chronicle's website: http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2007/05/14/findrelig.DTL engardio really sugar coats this and it drives me nuts he keeps getting referred to as a journalist....and conveniently forgets to mention that this documentary was watchtower approved, and wouldn't've been made any other way b/c watchtower legal would've been on his ass, and that's why it's the first film of its kind (b/c watchtower is now taking publicity as a real concern in recent years) and no jws would've been able to participate if the watchtower didn't approve or they may have been set up to be disfellowshipped themselves, which is something he glosses over just like the watchtower society wants it..... and how he beefed up the attendance numbers whenever it screened in every city it played, asking jws to go to the film repeatedly to 'get their word out'. so most screenings were filled with all the congregation members around the area wherever it played. brilliant idea, but engardio's a manipulative prick....i guess kind of like a lot of jws. ;) i do agree with his idea of understanding the individuals in the religion, but it's a religion that isn't too keen on individualization. he made $$ off this and is probably set for a while. as the article says, he's openly gay. there's something VERY off about this b/c every JW 'knows' he's going to die at armageddon, but he's a genius for buying into the bullshit to make money and get a rep as a documentary filmmaker....just wish they'd stop calling him a journalist b/c this is a propaganda film, not an objective look at the real issues with jws. engardio sent out letters repeatedly begging witnesses to purchase their own copies even if they'd seen the film and not to make illegal copies of it. if we did a cross reference of who ordered the dvd and went to the screenings, i'll eat my balls if it's not 97% jws (not counting press copies he pushed, etc.) it's good to get in bed w/ the jws, and he's set up financially for sure and now here comes the 'worldly people' buying into it b/c they just think there's a buzz. little do they know they're 'worldly people' and how they're regarded by jws. as far as i'm concerned, don't even give him bad publicity or write letters to pbs, etc. they consider negative letters as interest....the best thing that can happen is to let this film quietly disappear. i'm pitching some essays dealing with real issues of shunning, etc. in the hopes of getting them published in nytimes or somewhere similar. and, the jws have been playing the nazi concentration camp card for years. i personally have panic attacks b/c of all the horrid, graphic experiences we were subjected to when i was a kid in the 70's and 80's by the survivors. yes, the horror of the nazis was unforgivable, but age appropriate content can also be abuse. if an intelligent five year old was subject to watching pornography by someone, that person could be charged. i was subject to constant violent images and feared for my life of being tarred and feathered (the only elementary school kid who knew what that term meant), b/c we were pretty much told it was going to happen any moment in the usa and we were going to be asked to sign our allegiance against jehovah or be violently killed. so, any film about jws in nazi germany just makes me ill b/c they used the experience as scare tactics to keep the drones close.

How do you measure success compared to before?
by JH inas a jw, success meant pioneering, commenting at the hall and book study, and going up the jw ladder.. how about now, how do you mesure success and happiness?.
-
monophonic
oh, i remember the thought process from years ago....being a pioneer and ms was important to get the hot spiritual jw chicks. being under the jw thumb squashed my creativity. every time i'd try to do a creative project, i was always hit with, you'll have time for that in the new system, you'd better spend your time pioneering. that was nailed into me when i took classes, worked on music (all bands, satanic and drug users...funny, now i'm a music journalist and many bands put that on as an image, but work really hard to succeed), writing, everything. when i stopped going to meetings b/c i conveniently moved halls and dropped out, there was drama there, but that's another story, i started writing film articles and the feedback i received was, 'some of those movies you're watching are unchristian'. that period in my life is when it really hit me, my purpose was to be a writer and work in film and music, it always had been, it's what i'm good at, it's what i'd do for free and do even if i had millions of $$s. i also realized that if god was really how the bible says, he gave us creativity, so, i had my own renaissance period of sorts. success is finding your purpose, what you're great at and what you love and developing that to the best of your ability. that brings contentment, which attracts the right people to you. it took me years to come to that realization and i've succeeded more than ever over the last seven years....and since i'm 'inactive', i still get the second hand talk of my old ex-friends who are seething with jealousy at my freedom, but masking it with their own self righteous dogma to justify their continued idiocy. great question....caused me to babble a bit. as to the other responses, family success is great...my wife still attends meetings, though she barely goes out in service, maybe twice a year, but we have an understanding that has caused friction here and there, but for the most part i wouldn't change a thing....so success in marriage and partnership is high on my list as well.
