I'm ordering those books mentioned.. Crisis of Conscience first though. That'll give me something interesting to read. I have this macarthur study bible to help me understand the bible, its new king james version, I'll start reading the gospels, You know.. There is a new testament, its almost like the JW's don't like to use it very much they're always quoting from the OT...

I've been studying with JW's for a few months..
by MichaelM ini've been studying with the jw's for a few months and i've attended a few meetings but things are feeling somewhat strange...i don't quite get the jist of things but i feel that i'm learning more of what the watchtower teachers and less of what the bible actually says.. i never open my bible.. i'm always reading the watchtower pamphlets.
i really like the people i've met in the congregation and the guy thats been doing the studies with me has been an awesome friend.. .
but i'm just having some issues.. i mean.. they translated their own bible to suit their own doctrines it seems.

Wow, tons of posts.. This will take a while to read. I've read most.. Thanks for the advice everyone and the concerning help. I'm going to have to visit all these links and rethink some things over.
I agree with the statement on the Cross being a long painful death, and that was just what the romans did at the time wasn't it? Crucifixtions?. After thinking about it...
Also a great point shown about, how a loving god wouldn't cause eternal torment, yet the JW's say in the armageddon most will die except themselves? Yeah.. that's real nice.
A big question though.. If God/Jesus/Holy spirit isnt a trinity, then why do most mainstream bibles have John 1:1 say they are? Every bible i've read on specific verses like that show that Jesus is god.. Unless its a big misinterpretation. From what I figure they have tons of people translating these greek texts and scrolls and whatnot... and don't they all come up with that? the New world translation says otherwise but how accurate could that be when the translators themselves don't even know what they're doing.
It's obvious they are different people when I read some passages... yet when things like John1:1 come along it just confuses me. I have a baptist friend whos been trying to help me with the JW thing and hes always throwing responses back at me when I come up with some valid JW points. *shrugs*.
OH! Another thing was.. My bibly study witness teacher .. I asked him about Dinosaurs and his explanation was that God put them on the earth before man to fertilize the earth, and then god wiped them out. Does that make sense? WHy would god have to kill many of his own creations when he could just make the earth pre-fertilized?
I appreciate everyones help again.. and i'll read and try to respond to more concerning posts.. its just. this place is very active, and i type slow.

There are things the JW's teach that I think make sense. No hell(Why would a loving god permit eternal torment? it's illogical and hateful). The trinity seems real iffy. I've seen a few things that almost hint to a trinity, but mostly Jesus shows that hes a completely different person than god and is unknowing as to certain things god knows.. asking him for help, being lower than him, like the mediator in between. Dying on a steak makes more sense because you actually suffocate when your hands are that high, on a cross your diaphram is fine. Wearing crosses and having pictures and idoltry and whatnot seems kinda goofy too. The point is.. Something isn't right in this society and i can't place my finger on it. I can't say their translation is all based on their doctrines when the same thing could be said of the other bibles.I mean who really knows? They could be finally getting it right. I don't know.. I'm just a lost person.. wanting to please the creator but afraid that one way is the wrong way, and i'm too stupid to find the right way.
Blah. Why is this path so difficult? I came here a long time ago and after finding out this isn't quite the Watchtower society type of forum... I ran off because people had things to say about why I wanted to be a JW.. Perhaps I'm afraid of finding things out I don't want to know? This all started with me reading this stupid anti JW book by David Reed.. I didn't even mean to get my hands on it my buddy just happened to have it lying around.. -

After reading many topics.. I'm confused. Is this a JW forum or an ANTI-JW?
by MichaelM ini'm studying with a jehovah's witness and it makes quite a bit of sense but i've been reading many topics on here and it seems that i can find every christian denomination and every religion except jehovahs witnesses.
do any jw's actually browse here?
maybe i'm just getting unlucky and picking the wrong topics where everyones discussing about how they used to be jw's.

Well thanks guys. You seem to be an ok bunch. I'm not really a JW so I can do as I please. I do have to admit they have some VERY strict rules and i'm still iffy about the Watchtower Organization. I will admit that the biggest beef I have with the JW's is their Bible. They claim to say that all the other bibles are fixated around certain doctrines yet theirs is too.... My "mentor" says that there are many non-JW's that say the NWT is the best translation and I ask "Well Can you tell me who all translated this Bible then I would like to know.." and he said that they don't share the names of the people who Translated it because they don't want to take any credit because it's God's word and not theirs. *shrugs* I really do have to sleep though. 3:37am for me and I gotta be up in 6 hours. I appreciate the responses and perhaps I'll talk more about how I got into this tommorow. Signing off.

Well it seems more logical than what ive listened to and observed from others. It makes sense to me that there isn't a Trinity. Didn't jesus ask for his fathers help or guidance? Why would he have to do that if he was God himself? How can God create someone of equal power to him? Why would you wear a cross if Jesus died on a cross? If he got shot by a gun would you wear a gun around your neck? Idols of worship like pictures and items aren't needed.. These things I like and make sense to me. I'm still very ignorant when it comes to Bible reading I have only touched the top of the mountain. I will use my judgement to what makes sense and perhaps down the road I will see something more clearly, who knows? I do feel that you should know God's name to the best of our interpretation. I would feel closer that way. It doesn't make sense to me to say God and Jesus, or it should be.. God and the Son.

Well first he told me to avoid Internet stuff, but we sit back sometimes and view websites together and he usually has answers to every anti-JW topic and whatnot. He has said to just go to the Watchtower but I want a forum I can chat with other JW's.. I'm a social person but its hard to get out sometimes on a tight schedule.

Perhaps I was misled to an ex-JW forum in which case i'll turn around and head the other way.
