this is for all of you out there who post wells of information on the doctrines of jw's.
let's say you had to present your top 5 arguments for why jw's are not the true religion, which five would you choose?
i'd like to hear all of your thoughts.
Assuming God exists for the sake of argument...
1. Lack of continuity/flip-flopping doctrines - if they were wrong in the past, how do you know they're right now?
2. Failed prophecies
3. The entire basis for the 1914 calculation - stringing together otherwise unrelated passages does not a coherent theology make.
4. The concept of a centralized, monolithic "organization" controlling everything
5. Washing over their statements that lack evidence with excessive use of the phrase "evidently."

jaracz died this morning, wednesday, june 9, 2010 at about 7:30 am.
he was 84 years old.
The difference between Ray Franz and Ted Jaracz is that Franz was a force for good in the world. When he left the organization he never forced his views onto anyone. He didn't start another church and didn't want to be lauded in any way. Those of us who pay tribute to him in the form of kind words and thoughts do so not out of any kind of worship, but out of genuine appreciation and gratitude. We praised Ray Franz because of what he did, not because of who he was. We realize he wasn't perfect and unlike how Witnesses view the society we didn't "follow" him, hanging on to his every word. We were free to disagree with anything he said. In fact, Ray's legacy is widely respected among atheist ex-JWs as well as Christians.
Ted Jaracz was someone who not only exercised control over millions of people, but someone who actively worked to cover up the pedophilia problem. He actively opposed the repeal of the rule that two witnesses are required for an abuse allegation despite the massive amounts of harm it would cause (how often are two witnesses present during a sexual assault?). To me, Ted Jaracz is the moral equivalent of Pope Benedict XVI. The only good thing about him is that he didn't wield nearly the same amount of power. But he is the embodiment of the "organization before people" mentality that poisons the experience of so many Witnesses. Ted Jaracz helped turn the organization into a pedophile paradise, an arena where authority could be obtained and thus free access to their victims could be granted. Jaracz helped make sure those victims would have little to no recourse. To an abused child, "wait on Jehovah" serves as little comfort.
That is why I have nothing but respect for the legacy of Ray Franz and nothing but contempt for the legacy of Ted Jaracz.

most of the emails that i receive from jws are short and to the point - i am wrong and jehovah will soon exact vengeance on me.

here is a typical one.
When someone says "I couldn't even begin to scratch the surface of all the wrong things you've said," it means that they're either too lazy to have a meaningful argument with you, or they're masking the fact that they have no rebuttals for anything you're saying.
despite growing up a jw i was always curious where this corny plays came from?
my best memories of them were when they used to turn the lights out in the convention center - cause that meant i could sleep!!!

Celente is just a modern-day Nostradamus. The key here is that all of his supposed "successful" predictions were only interpreted after the fact. His predictions are very generalized. For example, he never said "there will be a stock market crash in 1987." He said "there will be a stock market crash," and after it happened in 1987, people claim he predicted it. The thing is, there will ALWAYS be another stock market crash, so it's not really an amazing feat to predict one.
Also, his failed predictions, such as his 2005 claim that the bottom of the luxury market won't fall out in the coming crisis, are often forgotten as quickly as it becomes apparent they didn't come true. Celente's followers are falling victim to the same tactic psychics use: getting their audiences to remember the hits and forget the misses.
