This board saved my life. I was a zombie when I first found out I was a cult member. I really don't know what I would have done if I hadn't found others feeling the same way, going through the same things.

This board is so surreal...
by zeroday inhaving been a jehovah's witness for 28 years any and everyone here could have been in my congregation with no thought of discent...and yet here we all are here...some time in our past we realized something was wrong with our belief system but you would have never known it with the ones you shared your beliefs with...i never dreamed i would ever leave much less find a community struggling with the same issues i did but we did and are all here...kind of surreal in a strange way...who would have known...

Witnesses on the train
by Simon inthey are having their dc here in calgary at the pengrowth saddledome so this morning the lrt train was full of them.. what a spectacle.. guys in ill-filling suits (on a roasting hot day) and 22 year old women dressed like they are 42, all with their silly name badges and yapping on loudly (much louder than anyone else ever talks to each other on the train - i guess they have to be conspicuous eh?).
little did they know that sat just feet away from them was an evil apostate ... ooooh.

OMG - Oompa, that was one of my favorite "experiences" at a circuit assembly from the platform. The way I heard it was that a man was about to commit suicide by lying down on the railroad tracks. He got hit in the head of course, by the blue book of lies, (he may have been better off getting hit by the train). It was also stated that while this experience was being told at another assembly, a brother stood up and yelled "That was my book!" He was then escorted to the stage to tell how how someone came to throw his book out the window.
I call BULLS**T, I wish I could have seen through it then.
Give them hell Simon. -

profanity
by janitorforlife inmy disfellowshipped dad told me leaving "the truth" had not been good for me as i used too much profanity and liked to drink.
when i first became "free" i guess i went overboard with profanity and enjoyed the freedom to go to bars if i wanted.
they were novelties.

I could go on about this topic for hours, but I won't. I vehemently object against anyone getting to decide what words are "bad" words. How can a word be bad? It's a word for cryin' out loud. Foul language? Give me a break, the thought to me is ridiculous. I do not use language that others may find offensive, in their presence, out of respect for their particular viewpoint. Maybe it's rebellion against everything the cult stands for, all I know is I'm free to decide for myself what is acceptable as we all are. I rebel against someone somewhere along the line that I don't know, deeming a word "bad". I'm not buying it.

Hi Todd, I lived in Ogden, and Clearfield during the year and a half I lived in Utah in the early '80's. Momzcrazy was raised there I believe. I've been a regular poster for the last year but haven't posted much the last few months due to limited internet access. I don't really remember any posters from your area but don't let that stop you from finding a topic that interests you and jumping in. Lots of support here no matter what part of the world you are from. ~Robin

It takes courage to enjoy it.
by slimboyfat inas someone wise once said, it can sometimes take more courage to give in to our desires than to resist.
i feel this is especially true for those who have been jehovah's witnesses, but who have managed to break free from the mental tyranny of so many needless watchtower prohibitions.
how many of us had a warped or in some sense stunted adolescence because of the mixed up views of sex the watchtower instilled in us?

Excellent post, love Bjork, very wacky and I'm all about wacky.
I was converted in 1979 at the age of 21. I don't have the hang ups that I see a lot of people have, especially those born in. My wish for all of us is to have the freedom to live free and enjoy life. We are the only ones who have the power to let go and make that happen for ourselves. I suggest therapy for anyone having trouble with letting go.
Those f**king evil bastards only have control of our minds (and our bodies as well) if we allow it. Don't let them win. Take your life back. -

OK, let me explain....
by dawg inso, the last few threads i've written have been about telling your families and friends how you feel; many of you have given me the reasons you don't speak out to your families, but i want to tell you the main reason you should.
please let me explain.... .
i keep on stressing this point because how it makes you feel, i'm telling you all, that for over 19 years, i let information about my thoughts out slowly, then the tipping point... at my uncle's funeral 2 february's ago, while listening to my family pontificate at dinner about who so and so is pioneering and the like, it hit me that i was sick to the core of them throwing their bullisi*t beliefs at me like i was inferior or something.

Dawg and JG - I also believe that it is much better to be honest about how we now feel about the cult. Living any kind of lie is never conducive to good mental health.
Having said that, I have great admiration for those "undercover" who are still active as they discreetly try to enlighten others. I can't think of anything harder than that and I have read several success stories here on the board.
But to feel dishonest about posing as an interested one is not the same as living a lie in your daily life. I think there could be great results if handled properly. I am all for trying to reason with JW's while pretending to be an "interested one" or Bible "study".
Whatever works. Sometimes it is an "in your face" method as Dawg attests to and other times it's a kinder, gentler approach.
There have been some excellent examples of "Letters to the Editor" by posters such as AK Jeff and Gopher. I believe we all should be doing something to work against the mind control. I have found that my anti-informal witnessing is more rewarding than anything I ever did as an active member of the cult. -

Post by Ray Franz
by Amazing inray franz requested that i post the following comments written by him:
as has been stated already, the presentation made from the silent lambs source in connection with the child abuse issue completely misrepresents my position.
when i spoke by phone recently with the author of that presentation, and pointed out that i had never expressed the views presented, his comment was that from his previous conversation with me (held some months earlier) he "got the impression that i was not on the same wave length" with him.

Violations of privacy re: postal mail by JWs
by Dogpatch ini have been sending out orders of books to jws, ex-jws and others for over 25 years.
sometimes plain wrap to keep the family's noses out of it.
over the years i have seen the same constant pattern: whenever the questioning jw lives with or near family members who are currently jws, they want to break open the mail to see what others are ordering!!
