Please Tell Me ...
by snowbird inwhen i use the colloquial expression, "this here," does it irritate you?.
my mother talked - and others down here still do - that way.. she worked like a dog to see to it that her 12 children received an education.
mother deceased in 2005. one of my sisters and i like to use that expression as a bittersweet reminder of her and our victory over poverty and despair.. however, when i use it on here, it rankles a prominent poster.

Why has God allowed this to go on for so long
by watersprout inwhy has god allowed this system to go on for soo long?
he's god he doesn't need to prove anything to anyone!
why have the billions that have lived on this earth had to suffer for what two people did in eden?.

Once you wrap your brain around the possibility of their being no God (or at least one who intervenes in human affairs), you will see very clearly that it's up to humankind to make or break the good thing we've got going on on this beautiful planet.

"My" atheism...
by changeling ina comment on dgp's thread about being kind to jw's promted me to post this thread.. as a life long (46 years) jw, i was conditioned to doing "the right thing" because it was required of me.
i was also conditioned to be on the lookout for others not doing the right thing and either distancing myself from them or reporting them to the elders.. today, i consider myself an atheist.
i have nobody telling me what the right thing is or fear of being punished for not doing it.

I'm sorry that freedom from God translates to a lack of responsibility for you. Like you said, that's not my way.
I feel responsible to my own moral compass to be the best version of myself possible. That version learns and grows everyday, lives in gratitude and attempts to make others happy in the process.
And while getting rid of imaginary beings that would check up on me leaves me alone in my own head, that's not a bad place to be. Like my poem says, being alone and being lonely are not the same thing.
As for "emptyness" that's your word, not mine. :)

I haven't seen the study, but yes, children need to be taught respect for all living things, compassion, kindness, patience, fairness, the value of hard work, a love for learning, manners... Some will learn easier than others, for some, certain things seem to come naturally... All of these valuable lessons that make someone a well rounded person can be taught w/o God or fairie tales.
