Another point missed by oblivious JWs - this week's Book Study
by sir82 inthis week's lesson for the book study covers chapter 4, paragraphs 18-24 of the "come be my follower" book.. in paragraph 24 we find this snippet:.
"...many have stood firm in the face of ridicule, persecution, arrest, imprisonment, torture, and even death.
where do imperfect humans get such courage?

Shawshank Redemption and leaving Jehovah's Witnesses
by AllTimeJeff ini doubt very seriously that i am the first to make the connection of exiting jw's and much of the movie "shawshank redemption".. frequently, the injustice that many experience as baptized members of jehovah's witnesses cause them to want to resign, to leave.. but it is a prison of sorts.
if you leave and announce it, you are shunned.
and no one will talk to you.. shawshank is such a remarkable movie to me for its simple, underlying theme; finding meaning in our suffering, and never stopping the fight against injustice, esp against our own freedom.. the best part of the movie is the line "you can either get busy living, or get busy dying.".

Finish the job the Jehovah's Witnesses started on you!
by Terry inwhat jehovah's witnesses get right is that the basis for christianity rests on scripture and the bible itself.. but, they only go just so far.
they stop at making you suspicious of bad things which have crept in to the bible through centuries of corruption.. the jw's unpack and deconstruct christianity j-u-s-t e-n-o-u-g-h for you to see the rats and spiders and cockroaches.
they quickly squeeze it all back together again repackaged.

"Finish what Jehovah's Witnesses got right---the DECONSTRUCTING of the myth of Christianity and the Bible!
Don't jump out of their frying pan into yet another one by whatever name.
Stop the BELIEVING game.
Give up the narcotic of FAITH in the invisible guy who will kill you if you don't pass his smell test.
BUILD YOUR OWN DAMNED LIFE and do a fine job of it by using your MIND!"
Ditto!!! :)

Just added my " 2cents" worth: RG says:

In reply to “Stuart” who said that those who are critical of JW’s are people who were disfellowshipped for gross moral sins, and are bitter and disgruntled, I want to say that this is not the case in many, many instances.
Many are like me, a former lifelong witness who is not DF’d, who live moral, happy lives with nothing to be ashamed of, and who see the religion as false and hypocritical.
There is no blanket “one size fits all” description of former witness who are critical of the religion. We do have one thing in common, though: we see the truth about “the truth”. -

Would Witnesses REALLY drink the "Kool-aid" if the faithful slave told them to? Yes or no?
by Witness 007 ina "spiritual leader" tells his followers the must put on rebok running shoes and "drink the cool-aid" to join a ufo in the tail of a comet and "go to a better world" so, afew dozen young people do just that to get "beamed up" to the mothership.
heavens gate cult 1990's.. my mother says "she is faithful to the organisation till her death" which makes me wonder if they ordered a mass suicide like the reverend jim jones did to escape a "great tribulation"....how many witnesses would really drink the cool-aid?...
without a gun pointed at their head of course!.

I grew up in the Knorr era. He was the one who instituted the ban on blood and the disfellowshiping arrangement (correct me if I'm wrong). Many who served in Bethel under him feared him. Some suffered nerveous breakdowns. He was a repressed, bitter, puritanical, mashochistic asshole.

what is the secret of the island?.

Para: How come Desmond got his powers off the island? He was running around making everyone's dreams come true (even if it meant running over Locke so he'd end up on Jack's operating table)...
Also, is the MIB really evil or just misunderstood? After all, his mother was murdered and he was brainwashed by the woman who raised him. Is his desire to leave the island so bad? Jacob has no such desire, does that make him good? Jeez...sounds like kids growing up in witness families...yeah, that's it! "Lost"is about Jehovah's Witnesses!!! :)

Terry asks "What is the secret of the island?" Since last season I've been saying the island was a place like "purgatory"...now I'm not so sure... It does seem to be folowing a pseudo religious theme... After last night we really see the good/evil, favorite son, fall from grace themes unfolding. Reminds me of Cain/Abel, Jacob/Esau, Paradise Lost/eating from the forbidden tree (the stream with the light)and other such Bible stories. The "mother" seems convinced that the island needs protection or bad things will happen, which reminds me of the angels guarding the Garden of Eden. Last night something was said (can't remember exactly what) that made me think they were dealing with the very origen of the Universe. Who knows? I can't wait to find out! :)

I am a loyal "Lostie". I too, hope the answers will be satisfying and not "WTF?". I am seriously dissapointed in the turn "24" has taken the last two weeks. Jacke Bauer has stooped way too low. He's no better than his enemies. I hope "Lost" ends on a high note.
An Indie theater in my area is having a "Lost" finale party that my husband and I may attend. Sounds like fun. :)
