Who promotes the earlier date for the composition of Daniel?
by Doug Mason ini have been researching the "70 sevens" prophecy at daniel 9:24ff.. one topic relates to determining the date when daniel was written.
the www provides unnumerable hits on the subject.. i wondered if everyone who promotes the earlier 6th century bce date of composition interpret chapter 9 as referring to jesus christ.. i likewise i wondered whether everyone who promotes the later 164 bce date says chapter 9 refers to antiochus epiphanes.. is it possible that anyone who believes in the earlier date of the composition of daniel also believes that the writer was predicting the activities of antiochus epiphanes?.

Pistoff...
Nothing in the teachings may be directly tied to encouraging this behavior, but I would argue that the organizational high control exerted on JW's lends itself to depression and other types of psychological issues. Was that the case with Mr. Lee...who knows, but the high incidence of "psychological issues" in every congregation that I was associated with would, at the very least, make me question why it was so prevalent among those congregations. I had several JW friends who committed suicide, had severe depression, etc.
Mr. Lee obviously suffered from some sort of mental illness...I can't say, yes it was tied to his JW years...but you certainly can't say there is no relationship to his JW time.

The common thread that seems to run through so many of these "events" seems to be the attitude by JW's that this behavior happened as a direct result of the lack of faith or "not staying close to the Organization" by the offender. It seems almost impossible for the rank and file JW to accept that a person could have a mental illness requiring some form of treatment other than prayer and additional study. If I were to ask my JW mother what she thought about this incident, she would immediately respond that the person had allowed Satan to take over their heart and mind causing them to commit an evil act. It would never cross her mind that the person needs treatment for an illness rather than an exorcism! Unfortunately, as these attitudes continue to be condoned in the Organization, I fear that this won't be the last time we read about this type of behavior on the part of a current or ex-JW.

JWoods...great points.
I was not implying a direct link between JW's and violent behavior, but you make a very strong point in the culpability of the Borg in doing nothing to help people like this. In reading about Mr. Lee's history, he has had a track record of bizarre behavior...did non of this show during his time as a JW?
I think we became so used to "unusual" behavior in the congregation, that it becomes difficult to discern when someone has gone over the edge!!

I am no psychologist, but if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...it might be a duck!
When I was a JW, I never gave much thought to it having a connection to mental illness. Now that I have the luxury of looking back without the rose colored glasses, I can see how a number of my friends and associates had signs of "issues" such as depression, OCD, etc.
I do feel for the people affected by this disturbed individual's actions...the trauma caused to his hostages and the loss to his family...sad stuff.

Peacedog...I posted this after seeing it on Freemind's website. I am always cautious about believing everything that shows up in the news, though this seems credible.

LOL Deputy Dog!
There is no question this guy was a bit tightly wound, so whatever set him off was surely deep rooted. I have no idea if his JW connection had anything to do with this, but it is certainly interesting given the debate over the high incidence of various types of mental illness among JW's.
