I agree that JW's, as a whole, were less likely to give gifts...this was true in our house growing up. The only wrapped present I ever received was from "worldly" relatives...and then I was made to feel guilty for accepting them by my JW mother and friends. I was inviting Satan in to my life with this weakness!
When I grew up and had kids, it always bothered me that they didn't get the opportunity to enjoy simple things like Christmas and Birthdays, so being the closet pagan that I was, we used to do "Present Day" a couple times a year. We would wrap presents and hide them all over the house...then the kids would have to hunt for them, gather them together and then we watched them open their presents as a family. Though my kids are not JW's now, they still look fondly back on "Present Days" as one of the highlights of the year for them. They told me it made them feel special, and it made me feel like I was providing a semi-normal upbringing for them. Now we all get together for Thanksgiving and Christmas and enjoy each other's company, so "Present Day" lives on in spirit!

i remember as a child in the 1980's attending four day conventions.

i know in the past conventions were even longer.

does anyone know how long they use to last and the approximate years?

DOC, you really bring back memories...I remember the numerous first aid stations all over the Rose Bowl primarily equipped with surplus military stretchers. I remember the constant movement of people (mostly elderly) on stretchers due to heat and sun exposure. There was even an ambulance or two stationed at the Rose Bowl to transport those too far gone to be "treated" at the main first aid area. It seemed more like a MASH unit than a convention at times. Intersperse that with interminably long talks and prayers, and you had the makings of good times!

Yep Designs...the Rose Bowl was quite the adventure! My Mom, brother and I worked in the fruit stands in the tents (remember those?!)...lots of flies and bees as we cut up endless cantaloupes, oranges, etc....strangely enough, it seemed like fun at the time. Now that I look back, it wasn't much different than children working as pickers in the fields!

I remember the 8 day convention in 1963...it was hot, dusty and seemed to last forever!

I always found it odd that our area had windowless Halls...and if they had windows they were faux and you couldn't see outside. Always made me wonder if they were designed so JW's wouldn't get distracted by activities outside. I also remember my non-JW relatives commenting on the lack of windows in KH's. Maybe it was just a CA thing...
