  religion has taught that without a belief in god and in absolute standards there is no genuine moral conduct.

  but for many alive today who do not hold a belief in god, is a moral and good life possible?.

  not to be confused with sin, which is essentially a religous idea defined as disobedience to god, morality concerns itself with observed consequences, so a wrong act can be determined by the effect or harm it causes to others.. for example religion teaches that in the eyes of god homosexuality is wrong.

  For example, we are told that an academic Marxist is not merely mistaken, but is 'evil,' and is guilty of practicing 'evasion.' People who are the victims of such attacks frequently come away baffled. They cannot understand how their character and honesty can be judged solely by the ideas they have proposed or defended. These personal attacks cause many people to hurriedly back away from Objectivism, and refuse to have anything further to do with it. The victims of such attacks frequently conclude that Objectivism is simply another nutty cult, not worth wasting time on.

  Science discards practices which prove themselvesineffective or harmful based on testing them against reality.

  yes - but science hasn't tested everything in reality yet - and much of what it does test is based on funding.

  Could you kindly explain to me the process by which Paganism has updated and modernized its tenets in order to cast previous beliefs into the "obsolete" category?

  You are asking me to apply modern scientifc ways of establishing things to historical, religious ideas and beliefs - different language, different concepts.

  The fact about religion is that it NEVER improves!

  I'm seeing a society of individuals with their own morals. So there is going to be conflict because we are all different.

  religion to me loosely identifies the various sets of morals that people choose to live under. But even within a religion people do have different sets of morals individually.

  But for many alive today who do not hold a belief in God, is a moral and good life possible?

  Yes but people will still need to be flexible with one another and open to dialogue because my good life for instance could infringe on another's enjoyment of life without my knowing it.

  I agree that we need to respect each other's privacy and what they choose to do in private.

  One does not need to kill to appreciate life.

  Nvr - but to save life or allow life? That's how I'm seeing the significance of the story of the Jesus sacrifice.

  I agree with you - but the 'meaningless sacrifices' were full of symbolic significance to them and to those who practice them today and they demonstrate/demonstrated awareness of and attentiveness to the people around us and the world we live.

  I'm seeing those ideas of sacrifices as man's way making a trade off to live with the world of his day. It seems to me that they were trying to acknowledge their gifts from the earth and their own finite existance.

  So the question is what are we doing today to acknowledge our gifts from the earth and our own finte existance?

  Pls bear in mind that I've only had one cup of tea so far
