There is a lot of stress associated with leaving JWs and this upheaval can easily lead to delusional thinking. Hearing Jesus speak to one is pretty delusional imo and I think on a board like this it needs to be made plain.

Why I Disagree With Affirmative Action
by snowbird inquietlyleaving asked this of me on another thread:.
but snowbird i have to ask you why you disagree with affirmative action.
one of the best things about a policy of affirmative action is that an establishement is saying 'you are welcome here' to minorities and that 'we regret that we excluded you in the past'.. while i acknowledge the good that affirmative action has done, ql, i've also been a witness to its downside.. let me explain: i was once sitting for an examination for a state job, and i overheard a conversation between two other ladies who were also taking the exam.. one commented on how difficult the exam was; the other somewhat flippantly replied that it was ok if they didn't do their best because the state of alabama is an affirmative action employer.

okay Sylvia
But when we talk about rights and equality this is what we are saying - I am entitled to this or that. A sense of entitlement has brought us to this point. Why shouldn't those two people have a sense of entitilement and not feel they have to exert themselves more than they are.
And anyway most of us are where we are because of some sort of affimative action on the part of the government.
At one time there was the artistocracy/the rich and of course the poor. And many amonst the aristocracy/the rich were convinced that the poor were lazy and theiving ((and I think they were prolly right, except that hunger very often drove the poor to thieving).
Then along came philosophers who argued that a successful society is a happy one. (I think by this time the poor had also become very numerous and were doing a lot of resisting which was creating much unhappiness). So it was decided that by means of "affimative action" the poor would be educated and given proper jobs and homes but this was restricted to those of ones own race. Now these ones did not say "hey wait a minute I don't want to be seen as receiving a helping hand, I want to be seen as having achieved my status through my own efforts". Those who were not ambitious simply led an average life and were quite happy to do an "honest" days work and leave it at that. A system of meritocracy was also encouraged but this once again was restrcted to one's own race. Affirmative action was put in place through systems of mentoring and networking to encourage meritocracy. The gifted and those of outstanding ability could rise through the ranks and create greater happiness for others. But note the "affirmative action" necessary for their success.
I know that the affirmative action practiced today to encourage minorites does have a stigma attached to it and it does also cause a lot of resentment when jobs are scarce. But remember that much of this affirmative active has been put in place to maximise happiness and to stop people going around starting resistance groups (and no doubt to stop people being lazy, theiving sobs)
Do you like my little story?

the way i see, in all races there are those who are above average (a very small group), then there are the average (the largest group) and then those who are below average ( a small group). This is loosely true of most peoples. Imo, opinion affirmative action is of most use to those in the average and below average groups.
My question to snowbird regarding the opening post, is - how do you know for sure that those two women (whom you overheard talking) were not simply of the average group of people and were simply expressing a desire to boost their confidence and committment to passing the test.

I'm guessing that although you were top of the hiring list you did not get the job
As to affirmative action it still alive and kicking here but has the added dimension of enabling people with disabilities and the elderly to work. On the other hand jobless queues are full of younger people. No easy answers. However it seems to me that people with disabilities and the elderly are more willing to take any ole job and very often are proud just to be working.
From some of the comments, it sounds like affirmative action is no longer practiced (or has waned) in the US.

burn, sometimes the best person for the job is the one who had the best opportunities in life and thats not fair. This is the plus side of affirmative action.
I agree with you Mrs Jones - but this reflects the difference in the way your employer viewed you as he no doubt employed you on your suitability and merits for the job whereas your colleagues viewed you in a negative light based on their assumptions regarding affirmative action. But as it becomes/became more common to see minorites in highly qulaified jobs being successful, surely, then negative biases have lessened

While I acknowledge the good that affirmative action has done, QL, I've also been a witness to its downside.
Let me explain: I was once sitting for an examination for a State job, and I overheard a conversation between two other ladies who were also taking the exam.
One commented on how difficult the exam was; the other somewhat flippantly replied that it was ok if they didn't do their best because the State of Alabama is an affirmative action employer. In other words, why sweat it? We're going to be considered anyway, despite whatever score we make.
My heart sank somewhere near my toes. I was so disappointed in them. During the break, I called them on their remarks. They looked at me like I was crazy! At home and at school, I'd always been taught to do my best and not expect any favors - I simply couldn't fathom their nonchalance. I confess, that experience left a sour taste in my mouth.
It left me wondering how many others felt the same way as those two ladies.

One Reason Why I Speak About Racism

if anyone cares or dares to read this, this is how it was when i was 13 years of age.. the gap in funding for black and white kids' education is still stunning to me 46 years later, but it's there in black and white.. it's a testament to our determination and fortitude that we acquired an education at all.. this, in the richest country on the planet!.
for your edification and, hopefully, understanding.. syl.

(Mind you from the perspective of an xjw - as we excluded ourselves from everything and lack opprtunites because of that - I guess a subject like this (the general topic that is) is going to hit a lot of raw spots. But I still think its worth discussing).
