hi guys.
i actually have had dealings with rod and found him to be a very reasonable and "non-robotic" man in the past.. i know it should not surprise me, but i was disappointed to hear his lies and half-truths.. they know their stuff and are not easily led, but he tried to lead the royal commission to believe that 2 people could be involved in investigating a claim - which is wrong.. his lack of memory on what parts of the judicial process are biblical - hello - none are.
there are no scriptures that backup the use of 3 men, a body of elders, cutting people off from family and friends, restrictions, etc.. he also lied about the gb being involved in policy creation and changes.. his statement that in all cases, elders are told to inform parents that they can go to the authorities and get the full support of the congregation is not verifiable.
Hi OrphanCow
The way the organization applies them is wrong. It creates fear in the congregations and allows elders to go on power trips (if they are inclined that way).Yes there is a provision for the 2 witness rule but there were no branches in the first century. It was up the congregation as a whole to look after each other.
They always bang on about Paul going to Jerusalem to meet the Governing Body. That is also rubbish. He met the elders, the reason he met with the elders in Jerusalem is it was a Jewish problem. Circumcision was causing a huge divide in the brotherhood and it needed the consensus of the mature ones in Jerusalem to pacify all Jews around the world at the time.
There is no evidence that the "Governing Body" sent letters about every single detail of life, or even had any control at all.
So take our structure away from it and the 2 witness rule had nothing to do with 7 men in NY or a man made branch, or a CO or DO.

Hi Johnamos
Nicely cherrypicked scriptures. There is a danger in applying 1 scripture literally without a proper context.
Remember Pauls letters are written to the congregations - not elders only. He was warning people to watch out who they associate with - no shunning is defined here in the deformed way it is practised in the JW faith.
1 Cor 5 - in the very next book Paul says to welcome him back in. Again in no way supports how we handle cases like these and how we treat "sinners".
2 John - is talking about the anti-christ not other sins. Of course we would not want to associate with them, but we can still treat another human with dignity. Again no judicial process is here mentioned.
2 Thess 3 - yes it is obvious that if a friend gets drunk and starts smashing your house you would remove him right? Same applies here - but notice vs 15 - And yet do not consider him an enemy, but continue admonishing him as a brother - hmmm - can't see shunning here either?
Rom 16 - yes if you had a group of any sort meet at your house and you had a person causing troubles and divisions you would avoid them also. But avoiding is not shunning. No elders are involved, no committees, etc.
So far I cannot see proper scriptural support for the way JW's handle committee cases.
I understand the need to watch out for people who could influence you but that applies to our general daily lives. You could apply that to a circle of friends.

Hi Sparrow,
What I meant was dealing with bethel is a robotic, bank teller like experience most times as an elder.
You feel like a stupid kid approaching an older kid to ask for your shoelaces to be tied. They don't tell you their name or give you anything personal however Rod was always human.
My comment did not mean he is not a victim of this brainwashing cult - I just meant he "appeared" to be quite a normal guy.

Hi Cappy
Thank you, I understand my wording above was confusing. The commission was asking about 2 people as an investigative committee, but the brothers were saying 2 people (even women - "heaven forbid!") could investigate - however that brothers were talking about 2 people being witnesses - they did not clarify it a matter needs 2 elders to investigate.

His statement that in ALL cases, elders are told to inform parents that they can go to the authorities and get the full support of the congregation is not verifiable. I asked some of the elders I know and they were not under that impression at all.
At least they are exposing at the higher levels that they are not Christ's brothers.
It would be great to have in that commission a person well versed in scripture to debunk their twisted reasonings.
something just occured to me.. like a lightening bolt in fact.
matthew 10:19 just popped into my head... new american standard bible 18 and you will even be brought before governors and kings for my sake, as a testimony to them and to the gentiles.
19 "but when they hand you over, do not worry about how or what you are to say; for it will be given you in that hour what you are to say.
Nice points again Data Dog and Godzoo.
It's funny that they blame the victims of child abuse for dragging Jah's name through the mud, but really it is they who are doing it!
If they:
1.properly protect victims and were submission to the authorities
2. tried everything in their power to help victims in the first place
3. compensate the victims who did suffer (even with the best policies) and provide "professional" "worldly" counselling
I doubt whether anyone would go to court or this would even hit the news.
Ahhh, but I forget - they would never do that because they are not Christ's brothers.
It's funny how many times I slip back into the "if only" :-)
i posted this as a reply to another thread, but thought it deserved it's own thread to draw attention to this important moment in the day 2 testimony.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zl4fobrocc8.
Poor bastard!! I feel sorry for him, I really do! He's a poor, ignorant man. He's a victim of abuse and doesn't know it. He's been thrown under the bus by his gurus!
Hi Data-Dog
This is the tricky thing. Most JW's are victims - there are really nasty elders, but for the most I find them blinded and unaware they are doing damage. It's not until we awaken that we realise the absolute craziness of the JW processes.
BUT even though these guys highlight the inadequacy of the elder arrangement, they are taking the blame for the GB. Come on GB where are you - would Jesus hide away while his poor foot soldiers got the blame for his actions? Would Jesus leave victims hanging with no support or love?
I considered myself to be a well read elder always reading "worldly" information about the brain, coaching / helping people, self help books, etc - but this commission has helped me see how grossly under qualified all elders are.
For any lurkers here, please look at the teachings from an outside perspective and see how ridiculous they are.
this is so sad - their reasonings are twisted.. let's pray for justice for all victims.. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-07-27/jehovahs-witnesses-child-sexual-abuse-royal-commission/6649340.
