I think it is so crazy the type of high standards and complete laco of understanding that goes on when dealing with teens in the congregations. I remember my own experiences, like the first time I got caught smoking cigarettes. You would have thought I was shooting heroin or something. Elder came to the house, mom completely disappointed..I mean c'mon....at least the Amish accept the fact that their teens will get into mischief and they don't make their youth feel absolutely worthless about it. I wonder if people who are JW's realize the effect that type of high moral standard and always falling short of it, does to a persons psyche in the long run....

I am sure it was the same one. It was kind of strange because the parents and older people in general seemed much more laid back about the whole thing...You know, like it was just a normal process..Going out and partying...

Another thing that seemed interesting was the fact that they seemed to just hang out with other Amish, I mean even after they decided not to join the church. Which makes sense considering their is an instant bond with someone who has been raised so similiar (and weird) as yourself. I mean, I find that with ex jw's..You don't even have to explain anything...Everybody went through the same garbage...We all were forced to knock on doors, to take a stand at school, to not miss meetings, blah blah blah....I mean it is hard to explain that to people who have never experienced this.

A POLL! How long did your "re-evaluation" take?
by Gayle infrom beginning to end, how long did it take you, when you first started your personal questioning and re-evaluating the watchtower organization and concluding that the wts was definitely not true?
my sister is asking this.
some of us (who left a couple decades ago - pre-internet) are saying it took about 10 years on average.

It took a couple of months. I mean I always had my doubts but then I met someone who actually was pretty intelligent and I found it was really hard to "preach to him". Mainly because most of the things that came out of my mouth sounded weak and ridiculous......once I actually looked into the internet, it just confirmed a lot of stuff I already doubted...In a few days there was no doubt in my mind I would NEVER go back...And that was that!

Actually, the documentary showed Amish kids with drug problems. And they seem to also have a problem with teen pregnancy but obviously it is rare. I just found it interesting that when they were allowed to do whatever they wanted they went completely overboard with the freedom. Just going from one extreme to the other. A lot like many Jw's I know when they get their first chance of freedom.

scripturally free to remarry secret!!!
by asilentone ini know a brother that was not scripturally free to remarry to the best of his knowledge, his ex wife was disfellowshipped in another state, his ex wife did not contact him letting him know that he is scripturally free to remarry, but the elders at his congregation knew about it, but they chose to keep it a secret from him for whatever reason???.
he did not know about it after one year after the fact!
he learned about it from a brother from another state.

Same thing happened to a family member of mine. Her ex confessed and elders, who happened to be his buddies, kept it from her too. So when she finally decides to leave her husband because basically he was a drunk, hubby actually confesses to her! At least she was able to divorce and remarry. Anyways, justo goes to show all the "holy spirit" that is involved with those committee meetings!bv

I have had several visits. I guess because my ex husband and I had were always on the fringes and on the verge of a divorce usually. My ex always got counciled to attend meetings more and I got advised to pray more. This advice was always the same no matter what the problem was...Cheated on wife???? attend meetings and pray....doing drugs????? attend meetings and pray....really depressed???? attend meetings and pray..you get the point....anyways, I always think to myself why no one had the gumption to just say to me "look hun, you deserve so much more than this asshole, marraige is not about waiting up for hubby until 6 am and raising your children alone..." but I guess that would have been too loving and sincere...
The last call I got was about my lack of attendance. I pretty much told elders I was reevluating my life and what I wanted to teach my children. One tried the old "kids will die in aramageddon" routine. But they never came back again!
Even if they actually would like to help you, they are bound by their own policies...soo sad...I bet many have alot of regrets on how they "helped" many in the congregation.

Did anyone catch the documentary on Rumspringa among the Amish???? I thought it was pretty interesting stuff. Rumspringa is a time for adolescent Amish youth are allowed to pretty much "run around" and do anything they please, before deciding whether to join the church or to leave it. Shockingly, most decide to join. I believe they said around 80% end up getting baptized and become members of the church. Those that decide to leave can do so, although eerily enough, all the ones they interviewed spoke about how they are haunted everyday by the thought that they will NEVER get to heaven. But they are not shunned. Now if they do decide to join the church and then leave, well the the whole shunning thing happens. Much like Jw's.....Anyways, left me thinking...Why wasn't I raised Amish instead of Jw??? I would have been out by 16 and still been able to talk to family! Who would have thought?
