I don't understand why you can't go. She isn't baptized yet, right? And neither is her fiancee? She should consult with another elder. And ask for some bible and literature backing for what he says. If he can't show any than your sister should be able to have you at her reception without any guilt.....I would call the idiot elder on it!!!

I'm not racist but.....
by Burger Time insavemysoul made a good point that i have heard often.
semi/full blow racist remarks are usually started off with "i'm not racist but..." then add some blanket statement afterwards.
so is racism now the new gay?

Just reminds me of this Seinfled episode where George had a black boss that looked like mohamed ali and then he had to pretend he was friends with the black bug man to prove he wasn't racist.....funny stuff!!!
the thing is that if you aren't racist you really don't have to be clarifying things for people....and if you are it will come out in your actions and in what you say anyways..even if you declare I'M NOT RACIST....

Is Happiness Genetic?
by compound complex indear friends,.
happiness abounds of late on the board.
idealism is great, tempered by reality.. i've had friends and family that were perpetually gloomy [often with good reason], but also those who were generally upbeat.

I don't know if it's a genetic thing or not...but I've often wondered why here in South America I see less people depressed and they seem to have more obvious hardships and problems. Whereas in other developed countries there seems to be more depression.....

I don't know how relevant it is, although I'll be interested to see the other posters. I'm a spontaneous person myself. I hate planning things. I love spur of the moment activites as well and I also have to admit I'm always late to things because I hate appoinments and such.....you can imagine when i attended meetings.....yeah..I was ALWAYS late...ha!

I'm totally excited!
by coolhandluke inwhen i interviewed for my position my now boss asked me why i didn't have a degree.
my mind filtered out "well you see sir i wasn't allowed to go to college and without that hope basically glided through high school and then went to a trade school so that i could eat.
" instead i told him that it was one of my major goals.

Congratulations!!! I'm always amazed at how many ex jw's do something to really help people after they leave the organization. You really do learn to be a better helpful moral person after leaving a religion that has convinced many that going door to door is the BEST way to help....crazy!!!

Radical Apostasy v Liberal Apostasy
by diamondblue1974 inin the wake of the 'dannygate' issue it made me think about the impact of apostasy and it various forms and on some level how it equates to the feminist movement and its development over the years.. initially, the radical feminist movement were and are the typical man hating, bra burning cross section who undoubtedly moved womens rights foward significantly and to some degree still do.
without the radical feminist movement, the likelihood of the liberal and more balanced feminist movements ever existing would have been uncertain if not improbable.
so indirectly the feminist movement owes a lot to those radicals who were out there burning bra's and linching men (i was joking about the last bit).

I remember going to an assembly and seeing apostates picketing. I was a teenager at the time and all it did was make me think that all apostates were crazy freaks like I had been taught all my life. In my opinion we should try doing what gets better results. If someone had talked to me as a teenager and told me that you could live a decent life outside the organization and proven with their example some other JW concepts as being wrong, it would have gotten a better result. You have to do what works, and I don't think radical apostasy works. The impact of the internet is proof of this.
