I think I would rather have been raised as a Free Mason than as a JW!!! Hell, if you get high enough in the Free Masons, you can become a shriner and wear those cool fez hats and drive a tiny car or motorcycle in a Shriner parade! Not to mention the Shriner's and Scottish Rite children's hospitals..... As a JW all I got to do was piss people off early every Saturday morning. Anyway, that's just my two cents.

Was Pastor Russell a Freemason, really?
by PinTail inwas pastor russell a freemason?.
by having clearly and plainly discouraged membership in freemasonry, it should be clear that pastor russell was not, nor ever was, associated with the free masons.
those who have accused him have done so with the hope that it will somehow show pastor russell had occult connections, and as a result would invalidate everything he taught.

oops! It's the Schutzstaffel! Off to the camps for me ....
... good thing I got my slinky
Hmmm..... remember the good ol' days before the internet and when we were all still in the Borg? Nah, I'll take the internet and high-quality Saturday morning Mexican internet porn any day! Haa haa. Seriously. Life sucked when I was a kid. I'm more happy now. No field service to worry about and the only boring meetings I have to attend are the ones we have while I'm at work. That's part of the problem with being raised as a JW; you really don't have any good old days to reminisce about.

Bible Law encourages pedophilia-really, not a joke. See Deut. 22:25-29
by oompa inthese sex laws have bothered me for some time.
until coming here i was unaware of all the pedophilia problems in the org.
the interesting thing about these two bible laws are that if a girl was engaged, and screamed during rape, the rapist only is executed.

The Bible is full of so much crap it's incredible. I say this because it is inconsistent, sanctioning behavior that it then condemns elsewhere. On the subject of pedophilia, it was an eye opener to realize that the Bible is silent on it. It spends a lot of time saying how you shouldn't lay bare the nakedness of your third cousin, but nothing on the nakedness of a child. Amazing.
Maybe the bible doesn't mention pedophilia or children in a sexual context because it didn't even occur to the writers at that time that any human would have a sexual desire toward a child. This may be the reason why it's not mentioned.
However, that being said, I do notice that the bible does go into excruciating detail about other things of a sexual nature, such as where it lists all of the relatives you weren't supposed to see naked or have sex with. It mentions as you have said, third cousins, aunts, uncles, etc, etc. Why wouldn't there have been at least one verse that said not to have sex with children? There are verses against homosexuality, bestiality, masturbation, sex with a woman while she is menstruating, verses against witholding sex from your spouse, verses about when to marry or not marry based on sexual impulse, etc., etc., you name it. But I don't remember ever reading a single verse about pedophilia. Why is the bible so explicit about all these other things, but doesn't even mention this one topic?
But, you know, the WTBS doesn't always teach exactly what's in the bible, anyway. Just see the September KM about how no one should use the internet to discuss the bible or study religion. Ha Ha Ha. I think as long as I stay away from the Kingdumb Hall, I'll be fine!

28 "In case a man finds a girl, a virgin who has not been engaged, and he actually seizes her and lies down with her, and they have been found out, 29 the man who lay down with her must also give the girl’s father fifty silver shekels, and she will become his wife due to the fact that he humiliated her. He will not be allowed to divorce her all his days.
Oompa, I think you might be a little bit wrong on this one. I don't think verses 28 and 29 indicate rape. Jewish law, much like modern American law, places the responsibility and much of the punishment on the males when it comes to sex. Even if a girl consents to sex but the girl is too young under the law, the male participant is considered a rapist. In most states it is referred to as Statutory Rape. So, in much of history, the male has always been considered the agressor, even if that wasn't the case. In ancient times, and even now in some countries, girls are married off or betrothed to a man when they reach the age of sexual maturity. The country where my wife is from still practices this. When she reached puberty, she had men comming to her house offering her parents money for her hand. So, trust me, it still happens. In bible times, young girls were often engaged and married when they reached the age of sexual maturity. I think for the perposes of these few verses, an engaged girl means a girl that has reached the age of sexual maturity that has already been promised to a man for marriage. I think an unengaged girl means a girl that has reached the age of sexual maturity, but has not yet been promised in marriage.
I think the first two verses indicate a rape scenario, because the girl is screaming for help. Under such a circumstance, there would be no punishment for the girl, because she did nothing wrong. She was a victim.
OK, so here's what I think the last two verses mean.... Notice in verse 28 where it say that he lies down with her and "they have been found out". I think that means that they were having sex together and they got caught. It doesn't say that the girl is screaming for help, as in verse 27. I think that what it means is that if the man and woman were having consentual sex together, and the girl wasn't engaged and promised to another man (aka another man's property) they must marry. The man who is having sex with her has claimed her for himself by virtue of having sex with her. After all, I think finding two people in the bushes having sex is a pretty good indicator that they are attracted enough to each other to have sex, so since they've already committed the marriage act, they might as well be married. Also, he must pay a fine for his transgression to the father, because after all if these two were found screwing in the bushes by somebody, it is a shame for the family, and the father is the head of the family in all matters, so he must be the one to collect the fine. In modern terms, this would be considered a "Shotgun Wedding". I don't think that these two verses necessarily indicate pedophilia, because no ages are mentioned. I would assume under the situation I have outlined, the girl involved would have been at least sexually mature enough to be a willing participant in sexual intercourse.
At least, that's what I think it would mean, knowing what I know about how things were in ancient times and their view of sex, marriage and the view of society that women were property.
All this being said, I, myself, would think that something so important as this would be better explained by the bible, so we wouldn't think things like pedophilia were happening back then. It leaves too much to interpretation, and I think that all of us can read these same verses and have a completely different understanding of it. Kinda sucks.

Do those of you "born into the truth" have problems with relationships?
by marmot ini'm a 4th generation dub and i was the epitome of a goodie-two-shoes elder's son.
i was taught/brainwashed that dating was evil and only for mature brothers (i distinctly remember a part on the assembly with a "demonstration" that said even 24 years old was too young to date and you should concentrate on becoming a ms or pioneer first) and went through so much soul-destroying guilt because of the society's utterly ridiculous stance on masturbation that it almost drove me to suicide.
didn't help that my father the elder had a massive porn stash.

I was in the truth until was about 20. Dude, you HAVE to live life. I know you want to do what's right. I wanted to do what was right, too. But, you can't wait until you a million years old to be happy. I never held a girl's hand until I was 19. That is sad. Go out, find a girl and get laid. Seriously.
I haven't been a JW for over 10 years, but I still have social issues. My entire social growth was stunted as a JW youth. No friends, no parties, no anything. I still have trouble making friends, and I get nervous and exhausted in new social situations. I HATE parties unless I know everyone there. I am always trying to break out of my shell, but is still hard to do. I'm amazed I ever found a girlfriend! LOL. I'm married now and somewhat social, but it still kills me to make new friends. Kinda sucks.

I've always loved Pinky and The Brain cartoons, but hadn't seen them on TV in a long time - Mr Scully bought me all three seasons for my last birthday. I was thrilled, really.

You may, in fact, be the sexiest woman alive. It is my ultimate fantasy to be married to a woman who loves Pinky and The Brain! Zort!

Dude, this is so simple. Find a day spa nearby and buy her a half hour massage. I don't know what that costs in your neck of the woods, but around here it's about $65.00 an hour. Even better yet, buy two gift certificates, and send one of her girlfriends with her. You'll have to pour her out of the car after she's done. She'll be happy, she'll probably "thank" you later.
