Rugby Union? That's for privileged southern shandy drinkers. Rugby League's the real deal - harder, fitter, faster. You should come up north sometime to see the Leeds Rhinos or Bradford Bulls or Huddersfield Giants. Only joking...whatever floats your boat.

My grandma is still a JW and I visit her frequently. She's always regaling me of tales of people in her congregation who don't work because they've got ME, have a bad back, are depressed, are signed off work because of stress etc etc. If the social security system collapsed, I reckon that in the UK, half the JWs would end up at Salvation Army food give-outs. Otherwise, they'd stop swinging the lead and go back to work.

SURVEY: Who Believes In "God"?
by minimus inand by that i mean the supreme being or jehovah or jesus or buddah or whatever you might consider to be "god".

I would love to believe in God. Sadly, my experience with the JWs means I discount any possibility of his existence. The thought of having to go anywhere near a religious organisation ever again fills me with dread.

How "Strict" was the mentality in your congregation?
by JH inlike i said earlier on another thread, in the late 80's in my congregation, a brother could not shake the hand of a sister entering the hall.
no touching !!!.
i also recall going out in the field service and it was cold, like -20c, and i went to a ms house just to say hi, and i saw his wife waiting in front of her house for a lift to go out in the field service.

Single brothers couldn't go in service with single sisters for fear they'd hop into the nearest hedge to have a spot of hows-your-father. Also, a lone brother couldn't give a lone sister a lift in his car to the meeting. As a child, I was often a chaperone for meeting pick-ups.

Is There Something You'd Like To Tell A Witness "Lurker" Right Now?
by minimus inwe know there are a lot of "lurkers" here.
they might not have posted yet but they do check this site out.
would you like to express anything to them to help them in any way??

I lurked for a long time (we're talking years) and not because I thought it was still 'the truth'. Some people - myself included - just aren't into sharing stuff. The thought of posting stuff is just a little too much. In your own time guys...

Hi all - Newbie from Yorks, UK
by JayAre ini've been lurking for a while, but have finally decided to post.
this is a fantastic site with some really cool people (i feel like i know some of you already).
circumstances forced me to start my fade about 10 years ago, and pretty much start my life from scratch (socially, at least - family have always been great).

Thanks again for all your welcomes.
Edmond - you've been trawling the posh part of North Yorkshire. Harrogate and York are notoriously well heeled. Scarborough is always quite busy in summer. Next time, if you fancy a trip to the Yorkshire coast, try Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay or Runswick Bay - all much more beautiful, les commercialsed and less busy.

Thanks for the welcome, guys and girls. I grew up in a small, backward market town near Sheffield with a 3rd gen JW family.. The congregation I was in had a bunch of elders that were the most hardline and hypocritical imaginable (I managed to bag both a public reproof and a private reproof before I was 16, without even being baptized!).
I moved to Leeds at 19 when I found a job, went to a much nicer KH, and stayed there till I was 26 (being rewarded for my good deeds with a variety of 'privileges' along the way). It all started going a bit pear shaped for me with the 1914 generation thing.
Then, when I was 26, I met someone on a night out, started seeing them and started missing meetings. I was hounded by the elders for a couple of years, then moved over to W. Yorks to get off their radar and they've left me alone.
Haven't seen any of my old witness friends for years. My immediate family are all now out, too, and we're still close.
Probably the same story as many - just a different time and place.

Hi everyone, I've been lurking for a while, but have finally decided to post. This is a fantastic site with some really cool people (I feel like I know some of you already). Circumstances forced me to start my fade about 10 years ago, and pretty much start my life from scratch (socially, at least - family have always been great). It was tough, but reading some of your stories here makes me see I had it easy. Anyway, I look forward to reading and posting more. JayAre
