This woman may have problems, and the size of her family is no doubt unusual, so if she needs help why are we being unkind about her to her and her children.
As an interesting addendum and to show how large families can be beneficial, my cousin and her husband have been blind since they were infants. They wanted children, would you say just because they needed help that they should be sterilised? Or have their family limited? ell anyway they had two gorgeous children who are now grown up. But here is the wonderful thing about sometimes having a large family, aunties ( remember i said my mum was one of 13) provided lots of support. For instance up until my cousins children were born they lived in darkness, their children have normal vision problem but getting dressed can you imagine if the boy wore something pink or even worse a skirt!!
Now here is where is get better, the son is studying to be neurosurgeon at a leading University!! The support given by my aunties was invaluable. BTW in case you are wondering what happened to my cousin's parents, mum died young dad too. See we all gratuitously make assertions , which may or may not be true, but very few helpful suggestions have been made.
Strangely the real issues and solutions have been lost on many.

Beks, there has been discussion here by some, rudeness displayed by others, that is why CD is calling it as is.
I have been patronised, which is all part what happens on a discussion forum, however some have been quite vituperative in their comments to others.
My literary allusion with regards to Sophocles seems so have been missed by many posters. The Greeks raised these question over two millennia ago.
BTW the last person i heard calling someone a poo poo head, was about 4 years old, until now that is.

I always say blame the lawyers ! Good point, unless i am using one, then i want the best i can afford. Lawyers are parasites they so do not get the meaning of jurisprudence. LLBH.
Anyone read Sophocles - The Theban Plays, they have a bearing here?
Btw JD your analysis of population statistics is spot on.

There are some very interesting jurisprudential (both biomedical and familial ) issues that are not really being addressed here except by some posters. , just prejudices dressed up as philosophy.
Do we want the state and the judiciary to intervene in the fecundity of its citizens? If so when and under what circumstances? If some of its citizens are not well mentally do we want intervention to stop them reproducing? The Spartans use to leave unwanted children to die on Mount Tegea.
Can and should the state encourage good parenting ? If so how when and where. Will this sublimate the role the role that familes have?
Does this include homosexual couples?
You see their are many issues being alluded to here, but many are arguing ( with notable exceptions, JD QL, and CD come to mind) in a visceral manner, which is OK, when recognised as such, but does not help to have an informed and informative debate.
This thread could cover a number of quite prescient issues, if prejudices were set aside.

By nanny i mean someone who thinks that they have some one's best interest at heart, without even considering that person; sort of 'mum knows best'. Patronising, which many - you excluded, are here.
No one here has answered my assertion, that "if this woman IS ill, the conjecture she is exposed to is wholly counterproductive, if she is not why are we worried?"
Sad about the Guardian, i like The Independent newspaper.
Regards David
The Guardian is owned by Murdoch now?? That explains it. It does tend to be a nanny paper though

Oh Dave, Dave, Dave... what would you like me to do? Hold her figurative hand and say "There, there, Hon....It's okay. Have as many babies as you like. Why not shoot for 20!" Who are we to condemn this Frankenstein-ish bastardization of medical technology?
Maybe my "ire" if you will, comes from having to look square in the face of irresponsible parenting.
And you know what? The eyes on that face are usually closed and it's the most beautiful face in the world because that face is only a day old. The triage nurse has called me up to find out what to do with this beautiful face, cause Mom is a drug addict, and all 7 or 8 of her other children are all in state custody and she has since checked out AMA and has left the hospital, no name, no nothing. And dropped this child into the world as if it were yesterdays news. Do you know what it's like to have to place a 2 day old infant in foster care? Do you know what it's like to see a child come in to the emergency room because of abuse or neglect suffered at the hands of mothers ( and fathers) too caught up in there own issues to properly care for a child? Come do my job, 40 hours a week. Then maybe you can begin to comprehend real "ire".
These are your words not mine.
btw why do you express ire here?
David
Like i said Beks my mum and dad were both part of similarly large families that were alive and being reared between the 2 world wars, and with no welfare at all. They dida good job from what i can see.
We know little about this person.
We have nothing to offer this family but to speculate, well that should help.
BTW Independant_ ire hope you are enjoying your fade, i would not worry about the local congo finding you; you have given little away.
My congo has not found me here, and i am easy to identify every time i post here
Regards David
Hi Independent_ Tre, you brought up the subject of how hard it is to watch young children being taken into care whose parents are irresponsible and drug addicts, in post 198. Thus you joined the two together, not me.
I have began reading a book about an England Cricketer who had problems to do with his mental health, what is becoming abundantly clear, is that to help and support people in this situation is so important, not to proffer judgemental criticism
You can not have it both ways, if this woman is ill she needs support, if not who are we to criticise her life choices?
David
