i got disfelowshiped when i divorced my husband and altho we both went on to have relationships with other people he didn't get disfelowshiped as he wasn't going to meetings.
we have since then got back together and i find it so frustrating that i still get treated like a leper being shunned by his family and all the other witnesses but he still gets invited to dinner and works with them.
i don't want to be best buddys with any of them i just hate it when they cross the road to avoid me .

This truly is the place to be lissa. I have been helped alot by the folks here. Many here have been judged unfairly by the JWs. And most of here completely disagree with shunning. It is cruel and breaks up families.
Like you said, your in-laws are the ones who will really suffer in the end. Especially when your kids start seeing it for themselves. They won't want to see them because of it.
Hang in there and please don't run off, most of us really are nice.

I would explain to your husband how this is making you feel, in a gentle way without being mean about his family. If you get angry or yell his defenses will go up. He should support you and as it's his family, he should talk to them. They are being JW's and you really shouldn't expect different because you have the scarlet DF on your shirt and he doesn't. That is all they see.
I understand you have left JWs for good. Hopefully he will join you and you can develop other friendships together, so it won't matter so much what his family does.

PS: MOST of the people here are wonderful and supportive, so don't get scared off by some who have attitudes.
newboy started a wonderful topic about jw fathers, but thinking back my mother had more power.
her entire family was jw's and had amazng influence through the years, including over my elder father.. her own mother was a convert during rutherford's early years out of the 7th day adventist religion.
my mom and her brothers and sisters were some of the ones that wore the plackards that religion was a snare and a racket.
Growing up my mom played the supportive elder's wife role. She helped older ones, kept the house ready for the bookstudy and meetings for service. She ignored when Dad was throwing my brother into the wall and beating us with belts, hangers, etc. She kept forgiving him for his many "friends" at work. When dad was out of town we didn't go to meeting and she didn't study with us. We liked it when dad was out of town!
Now, after marrying and divorcing a "worldly" man, she is as active as she can in her hall. She is best friends with the prominant family. She doesn't know about my leaving yet, I was the last holdout of her kids to stay. I just get to hear her concern for my sister and her hoping she'll come back to Jehovah soon. So I think, in a way, she is more influential now than growing up.
