  What 1st made you come to JWD??

  id been out for a few years my wife brought a computer when she was at the meeting one nite i typed in jws here i am today still learning.

  I found h20 to firstly defend JW in the Third Reich against Kent Steinhaug and Norm Hovland. Then I started to discuss my doubts. Later h20 was down and most people came here.

  NWT based off a Catholic chosen canon, WTBS ever comment on?

  after reading elaine pagels book the gnostic gospels, ive wondered if theres ever been a statement made by the wtbs regarding the origins of the nwt, besides the painstaking efforts made to keep the translation accurate despite how the rest of the world translated the bible.

  as jws we were taught to follow the example set forth for and by the first century christians, however no doubt many of those first century christians were or became catholic as at the time that was the first legitimate, or universal, christian church established in spite of opposition and persecution from the romans.

  in essence the great harlot herself defined many things that modern day jws still see as fact.

  The Roman Catholic Church claims responsibility for the decision as to which books should be included in the Bible canon, and reference is made to the Council of Carthage (397 C.E.), where a catalog of books was formulated. The opposite is true, however, because the canon, including the list of books making up the Christian Greek Scriptures, was already settled by then, that is, not by the decree of any council, but by the direction of God’s holy spirit—the same spirit that inspired the writing of those books in the first place. The testimony of later noninspired catalogers is valuable only as an acknowledgment of the Bible canon, which God’s spirit had authorized.

  now that i look more into it, i believe its a recent english translation of a 10 year old german book.

  i wonder if penton's book referenced the german version of it.

  Considering it was likely translated into English by a JW, I wonder if "Jehovah" was inserted a few too many times, if you know what I mean.

  We will have to wait and see. We can always check with the German edition and with Garbe himself. At least, it is published by a university.

  How would you evaluate Hans Hesse compared to Garbe? I have the third edition of Garbe (German) and it is an amazing piece of work.

  The current fourth edition of Garbe's book is an unchanged reprint of the third edition.

  Hesse is superficial compared to Garbe. He also has a broader field of interest. His main work on JW is a collection of different essays on JW in the third reich. (This book is also distributed by the public affairs desk.) His is mentioned in the imprint of http://www.standhaft.org/impres.html (this shelters this private JW-site from the WTS).

  I own both books and would say that Penton's book has a more negative touch. Of ocurse, as an XJW Penton remembers that the JW claim to be God's only religion and this is the benchmark he uses. Garbe sees them as just another group that was persecuted but was outstanding in some way. To me, Garbe collected more details and has more internal distance to the topic. Penton does a lot of ad hominem against JW apologets (which may be deserved). When reading Penton I did not find anything new because I had read Garbe before.
  

  Some claim Garbe is pro-JW because he spoke at the "Stand firm"-exhibitions and because he changed some things in later edition after having access to the Watchtower Archives. But you have to notice that he also rejects the idea of JW being an "example for today" as they have claimed in Germany.

  Garbe is not a JW. He is the director of the concentration camp memorial Neuengamme near Hamburg. He wrote his doctoral thesis on JW without any support from the Watchtower who denied. When they changed their policy they started to support him and granted him access to the Watchtower Archives. To me, it is still one of the best (the best?) work on the topic.

  1980's Pop Song that Ends with Ahhhhhh

  this might be a difficult question, but i am going to ask it anyway.

  someone here probably knows the answer.. does a pop song probably from the 1980's sung by a solo female artist that ends with several lines of "ahhhhhh" sound familiar to anyone?.

  the song ends with the singer modulating "ahhhhhh" for at least 20 seconds.. when this song is played over the radio the dj's sometime "sing" along with the "ahhhhh" part.. ahhhhhh ahhhhhhh ah ahh ahh ahhhhhhh ahhhhhhh a".

  Ian (Dansk) in hospital with CMV

  hi, everyone ---.

  claire asked me to let the board know that ian is back in the hospital and expected to be there for about a week.. those of you who have been following the weekly vigil thread know that his cmv has returned.

  the virus is not responding adequately to the tablets, so ian needs to be medicated intravenously.. please keep ian and claire in your prayers.. marjorie.
