To me it's scary, saddening and heartbreaking. I never knew much about it until I started going out with my JW boyfriend 5 years and 7 months (!) ago - JWs were just those suited and booted people who sometimes knocked on the door before that.

Now all I can see is this controlling organisation that is taking honest, innocent people's faith in the Bible and turning it into something that is ruining and will continue to ruin lives around the world.

I ventured into Manchester city centre today. It was still pandemonium and I think I may have some lovely bruises tomorrow. But I managed to come away with some very cheap DVDs (Scarface, Pan's Labyrinth, Sunshine), a couple of faux-silver necklaces from New Look and a make-up bag from the Body Shop.

The problem with doing 'proper' shopping these days though is that every time I go into a shop and pick up, say, a tantalisingly cheap DVD or a video game there's always a little voice in the back of my head going 'what are you DOING? You KNOW you can get that cheaper online!'. Bah.

Peter Bjorn and John are ace! And I think it is possible to suffer from both at the same time.

Incidentally, I have been suffering from writer's block for years. I think it was cramp at first but then it slowly turned into mental blackout, sadly. It's a shame, because I'm quite proud of the things I wrote up until then.

Ha, I guess that such a response is only to be expected.

I found it inspiring reading, although a few bits (the indepth discussion of 1914 in particular) kind of went over my head. I was very impressed with how Franz attempted to back up as much as he could with hard evidence. A very appealing quality to a news writer like me!

I also admire the calm, measured tone taken throughout - it would have been so easy to lapse into bitterness and turn the tale into a piece of pure whistleblowing revenge.

I just hope I can gently persuade my boyfriend to take a look at the book now.

I finished reading Crisis Of Conscience today. I found it pretty mind-blowing, and I'm not even a JW. I was just wondering what the official/non-official response was from the Watchtower Society when it was published? Did they even deign to officially acknowledge the existence of the book?

- I have heard conflicting things about what is supposed to happen to people other religions when The End arrives. What exactly IS supposed to happen to those not in 'the truth'?
They are all supposed to die in terrific cataclysms, raining fire, earthquakes, etc. Extremely terrifying, will wipe out 99.99999% of the people on earth and leave a miraculously squeaky clean paradise for the survivors.

I'm not sure what this off the WT site means then... are they basically saying 'no' when they actually mean 'yes'?!

No. Millions that have lived in centuries past and who were not Jehovah's Witnesses will come back in a resurrection and have an opportunity for life. Many now living may yet take a stand for truth and righteousness before the "great tribulation," and they will gain salvation. Moreover, Jesus said that we should not be judging one another. We look at the outward appearance; God looks at the heart. He sees accurately and judges mercifully. He has committed judgment into Jesus' hands, not ours.— Matthew 7:1-5 ; 24:21 ; 25:31 .

What the hell??!!!?? It's not like you are trying to convince her to believe something that is not true, or does not make any sense when scrutizined closely! Think of how many current J-dubs have been convinced to believe utter bullsh*t...
You simply need to nudge her in the right direction to start looking in to her own faith. Be like a Borean. The WT is no match for pure truth and pure logic. It is true, that the brainwashing is highly effective - BUT IT CAN BE CUT THROUGH!!
Maybe I am just a romantic at heart, but GEEZE LOUISE - if you love this woman then GIVE YOUR HEAD A SHAKE AND GO GET HER OUT OF THE CULT!!

I'm kind of leaning towards this response myself. I'm in a similar situation and am currently trying to very subtly make him face up to the questions already in his head (there must be some there, otherwise why else would someone studying the JW faith even give a heathen cow-worshipper like me a look?). It's tough going but I feel like I'm really trying to DO something about it instead of lying in bed being depressed about it like I used to. And who knows, I might even be successful one day.

If she's really the one it's worth a go, surely?

Things I have always wondered about JWs but never asked my boyfriend about (because I thought I would sound stupid!)... at least none of you know who I am

- What goes on at JW wedding ceremonies? Are they that much different from other Christian weddings?
- And what about funerals, for that matter?
- At what age are young people considered to be first able to decide whether they get baptised or not?
- Are JWs obliged to throw away/burn birthday and Christmas cards and presents that get given to them by unknowing non-JWs?
- I have heard conflicting things about what is supposed to happen to people other religions when The End arrives. What exactly IS supposed to happen to those not in 'the truth'?
- If JWs don't belong to this world, shouldn't they try to build a spaceship and travel far far away, to a distant galaxy? Or at least to Mars?

Ok, the last question isn't serious, but answers to the others would be appreciated
