Thank you, Simon. It's been tough to ignore some of the more abusive comments.

Getting the forum back on track
by Simon inrecently we seem to have had a few different dramas and subsequent fallout on the fourm which i feel has detracted from its purpose.
with this in mind we have decided that we need to bring the forum back on track and as such we will be clamping down on a lot of the aggressive / insulting posts which have begun to become the norm for a few people.
we will also be clamping down on the paranoid assusation type of comments against newbies, if someone joins the fourm and you do not believe everything they post - so what, why do we need to hound them away with shouts of troll and fake etc, just ignore them if you dont beleive them.

What are your Guilty Pleasures of a geeky/nerdy variety?
by Crumpet ini don't mean the ones we know about already - things people wouldn't think you did or enjoyed to look at you.. i love watching ray mears extreme survival and learning about how to survive and find food and shelter in extreme climates even though there is a strong possibility that i shall never try and escape naked from a japanese prisoner of war camp, or crash without a flagon of water into the sahara, or come stuck in my ship in a freezing ice plateau in deepest antartica.
.
what's your guilty geeky pleasure?.

Oh...one more thing, perhaps not a surprise, but unusual.
I collect Andre Norton first editions as well as Groff Conklin collections.

Masters of Science Fiction
Very well done, though paced very slow for today's MTV generation. This is what the new Outer Limits should/could have been.
Cancelled after four episodes shown, 6 episodes were at least written an promoted. Originally shown on ABC. Maclolm McDowell was a delight (though a little scary, too, as he usually is).

Since I'm well known as a head-bound, Trekkie/Whovian from the land of Geekdom, the surprising thing about me is that I love Aussie Football.

Taste/Scent Related Memories - Have you ever had one of those....
by Crumpet inhave you ever had one of those intoxicating moments where you are walking down a supermarket aisle and you suddenly caught a perfume that you'd not smelt since you were small and it brought back a flood of memories, your first grade teacher, an auntie?
or a taste?
i just had a taste moment - i kind of feel bad about admitting to it though.

Many good and bad.
Old Spice cologne - my first lover, an incredibly beautiful and sweet man. The sense of seeing his body, feeling his skin, hearing his voice.
I'll skip the bad ones for this upbeat thread!

The Satellite That is About to Crash on Us
by lonelysheep inthe local news just reported that it is now only supposedly 100 miles above earth, yet will supposedly not happen until the end of february.
oh, and they supposedly do not know where it will happen.
that tells me it's 25 miles above earth, barrelling down and will be in nj tonight.

Skylab was 20 to 40 times bigger (this device seems only 2-4 tons); while purty (as most of it burned up coming down), and some Australians got some souvenirs, the uncontrolled return to Earth of that space station hasn't left much impact.
To me, the real scandal is the cost of this spy satellite that became inoperative right after launch (in late 2006). And the intended replacement product that was cancelled after a $4B investment.
Still, gotta wonder about the potential liability claims...

Got told off by a born again-er
by White Dove ini was enjoying a smoke on my little porch at my apartments and my neighbors pull up.
the woman got out, pointed her finger at me and demanded what that "thing" in my hand was.
i proudly held up my hand with a fag in it.

I was at a pride parade once when confronted by a picketing born again-er who proclaimed that "God hates you". I looked them square in the eyes, smiled and said, "God is love".
Their response: Screaming hissy fit, "God is HATE! God is HATE!"
I shook my head and said, "I feel sorry for you". They looked stunned and I walked away.

Now That We're Outta The "Organization" Can We Be Who We Really Are?
by minimus inwhen you come here, are you comfortable to be who you really are?
can you express how you truly feel?
i know that not everyone may "understand" who we are, but being out of the organization and its myriads of rules, we should be able to be comfortable.

One model of "who we are" is that we have a core which must work through a personality. The personality is basically the mind/ego, and becomes molded from experience and memory, and it is here that beliefs reside.
We generally cannot erase our JW past, so our cores must work through the damage (if you will) created by our exposure to the religion. We can heal a lot, hopefully, so that the impact is lessened, especially over time.
I can never be who I "was" before the WTS, if for no other reason than I was raised in it. I can at least live an honest life today without the WTS strictures.
