Kingdom Halls online
by GinnyTosken inup late and feeling a little silly, i decided to do a search online for "kingdom hall.
" given the society's stance about the dangers of the evil internet, i was a bit surprised to find so many online.. at my favorite site, a kingdom melody in midi format plays when you enter.
if you click on "kingdom hall picture," a seductive, jazzy song plays.

The Kingdom--Present or Future?
by GinnyTosken inthe five gospels: the search for the authentic words of jesus by robert w. funk, roy w. hoover, and the jesus seminar, includes topic essays amidst the text of the gospels.
i thought this particular essay might be of interest to some folks here, since we came from a religion that saw the kingdom as future.. ginny.
present or future?.

Red Religion and the Lawless Man
by GinnyTosken inive been sorting through my old jw books and found one published in 1951, what has religion done for mankind?.
skimming through it, a few sections caught my eye.. the societys comments about the dangers of the totalitarian red religion of communism are hilarious, since they easily apply to the society itself.
substitute russell, rutherford, knorr, and franz for marx, engels, lenin, and stalin, and brooklyn for moscow, and voila!.

Timothy McVeigh--A True Believer?
by GinnyTosken ini visited my mother this morning.
we sipped coffee in white wicker rockers on the breezy front porch, talking about things we can't discuss while my dad (still a jw believer) is around.
i told her that i'd heard that the upcoming dateline show about jws should be explosive, and about the letter on the silentlambs website from the society--unconcerned with reporting murder before baptism, but very concerned about investigating marijuana use after baptism.. she told me about an editorial she had read this morning by ellen goodman about timothy mcveigh.

Should Christians charge interest?
by GinnyTosken ininterspersed amidst the text of the five gospels are short cameo essays about topics related to subject matter at hand.
one that caught my eye is called hard sayings softened:.
hard sayings are frequently softened in the process of transmission to adapt them to the conditions of daily living.. luke 6:30a give to everyone who begs from you.

In what order were the NT books written?
by GinnyTosken in"jude," she [sue bridehead] said brightly, when he had finished and come back to her; "will you let me make you a new new testament, like the one i made for myself at christminster?".
how was that made?".
"i altered my old one by cutting up all the epistles and gospels into separate brochures, and rearranging them in chronological order as written, beginning the book with thessalonians, following on with the epistles, and putting the gospels much further on.

Your Top Ten Books
by GinnyTosken ini love the book lists on amazon; i get lost in them for hours.
recently someone asked me for book recommendations, and i thought it would be fun if we shared our lists of top ten books that helped us think our way out of the jw dogma.
im putting aside the obvious ones, like crisis of conscience and apocalypse delayed.. heres my list, in the order i discovered them as best i can recall.. ginny.

Sexual Ethics in the Bible
by GinnyTosken ini have been reading why christianity must change or die by john shelby spong.
i found his discussion of sexual ethics and the ten commandments both interesting and funny and thought i'd share.
this comes from a chapter called "a new basis for ethics in a new age":.

Book Recommendation: The Bible Unearthed
by GinnyTosken ini recently finished reading the bible unearthed: archaeology's new vision of ancient israel and the origin of its sacred texts by israel finkelstein and neil asher silberman.
here is part of a review that drew my attention to the book:.
the book reaches its conclusions from a huge array of archaeological evidence of different kinds, some quite clever, such as the analysis of camel bones; others representing new trends in field archaeology, such as settlement surveys.
