Would anyone like to recommend a topic for March first? Some have already mentioned the idea of talking about the pedophilia scandal. It might also be worth asking about the recent layoffs at Bethel, since that is an issue that will probably be on everyone's minds.

Naked Bobbing Bible Students
by DT infrom the golden age of february 10, 1926 page 310, "air baths are good for preventing colds... what you do is strip naked mornings and evenings and then bob up and down for a while.".
i found this at the watchtower society quotes site in this section on medical quackery.
i'm not surprised that the wts tried to shut it down because of all the embarrassing information there..

There was alot of medical quackery going on back in those days. The Bible students had no monopoly on that.
Very true. I get a kick out of it because they thought they were God's channel of communication, yet they always seem to be a little behind the times.

To my conservative counterpoints, and fundamentalist foils
by inkling infirst off, i want to make it clear that this is not sarcasm.. as shape is defined by shadow, each of us is somewhat defined by understanding.
exactly how we differ from those with whom we disagree.. for me, and perhaps quite a few kindred spirits here, this contrast is particularly.
sharp drawn on the subjects of "literal bible truth" and the origin and progression .

Thanks for this thoughtful post. I'm critical of religion at times, but I think of problems with religion as being mostly a symptom of common human tendencies. Atheists may feel smug at times because they have avoided certain superstitions or claims that can't be defended rationally. However, atheists are still human and can easily make the same kinds of mistakes. Some atheists seem to be reluctant to allow their theories to come under close scrutiny. There seems to be a fear that admitting weaknesses in current scientific explanations will cause people to give up the attempt to understand things rationally.
I think atheists need to be as critical of themselves as they are of religionists and embrace outside criticism as a way to improve our theories. If we don't do that, we could become guilty of the same irrationality and hypocrisy that we sometimes point out in others.

If you believe in Evolution then your a fool! God really is REAL!
by Blackboo inhere are some questions evolution never bring up or will evade questioning.
these are serious questions that kill all the silly beliefs about how the earth or universe got here..and here is why.
think about this for a second we would not be here if nothing for all existence did not exist.

But that's not satisfying when I realize that all the movements of the atoms of which I consist are, in a very real sense, determined by their physical nature and thus by the "laws" which emerge therefrom.
The big question in my mind is whether consciousness is a property of matter or if matter is a property of consciousness or are they on a relatively equal footing. I accept that attributes of consciousness such as memory and nerve responses are dependent on the brain's structure. I also realise that quantum mechanics calls for a conscious observer to collapse wave functions. It's as if they only exist in a phantom world of superimposed states until a consciousness observes them and gives them reality. My computer is complex enough to display a simple type of intelligence, but I don't think it has any type of consciousness. It's possible that a computer could attain consciousness when it exceeds a certain threshold of complexity, but I'm more inclined to think this is impossible and it can't surpass the physical rules that control how it functions. I have some hope that consciousness is special and isn't completely limited and determined by physical laws. Of course, if I'm wrong, it may be because I have no control on how my brain functions.

It feels like I have "free will," but I can't rationally defend the existence of free will, when it's given a robust definition that is at all satisfying.
Interesting thoughts. I think it is rational to have belief in free will because if you are wrong, then you have no choice in the matter. If you do have a choice, you may as well be right about it. Of course, that doesn't mean the truth of free will can be rationally defended. I wonder about free will too. I think I have some, but I wonder how much I am controlled by other things. Whenever I do anything nice, I can usually find some selfish reason for it. Maybe I have no choice but to act selfishly and it only appears that I have morals and free will.

"No evolution talks about what happens to life after it exists. I don't think evolution has much to do with the argument you are trying to make. It's possible to believe in God and evolution. If you are going to call people fools for their beliefs, it would be nice to better clarify what you are arguing against. " THIS IS A QUOTE FROM ONE OF THE APOSTATES IN HERE I FORGOT WHICH ONE BUT ANYWAYS EVOLUTION MAKES THE CLAIM A MOLECULE SPONTANEOUSLY GENERATED AND ALL LIFE RESULTED FROM THIS EVENTUALLY THIS IS A FACT
Welcome apostate 111. I'm glad you joined in our apostasy by associating with us. The fact that you seem to disagree with us is of secondary importance. Some people who believe in evolution claim life arose spontaneously, but evolutionary theory itself doesn't make this claim or address that issue. Oh, and molecules arise spontaneously all the time. It's an observed fact. It's more difficult to explain how a cell could arise spontaneously, but that doesn't mean it can't be explained in the future.

The fact that you can see life in other people is enough to believe your existence is real and not a delusion.
I have no problem accepting my own existence. It's the only thing I can really be certain of. The existence of matter is an assumption, because all I have is my experience of it. I can't prove that my experience corresponds to reality or that there even is a reality beyond my experience. To assume a creator of matter is to make an assumption about an assumption. Quantum mechanics even provides experimental evidence that indicates matter needs consciousness to exist. If you insist on an always present consciousness, it's simpler to look inward than outward. You are asking good questions, but identifying your hidden assumptions might help you to ask even better ones.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears that you are using the concept of God to fill in the gaps of your knowledge. That's fine, as long as you define God as being what you don't understand. If you arbitrarily assign certain traits to this "God" then I think we start having logical problems. I won't tell you to not believe in God, but it might be a good idea to reduce the gaps of your knowledge. Many unexplained events were attributed to God in the past that now have reasonable physical explanations (like gravity and physical laws). Things like evolution and cosmology are more reasonable than you might realise. If you do more research, you may be able to ask better questions and make more convincing arguments, instead of getting distracted by things that aren't really relevant to your argument.
