I cannot believe you people who would like to see gas at $5 or $6 a gallon ! Are you really that myopic and thoughtless or do you just like to see people suffer ? Okay, brainiacs, here's one for ya.How are plumbers, electricians,construction,landscapers and many others in public service supposed to get around ? Do you suppose the train tracks runs right up to someone's house ? Or maybe they can strap a ladder and heavy equipment on top of the bus ?

Some can hardly feed their own kids or buy clothes.What happens when they get sick ? I guess those of "lower class" aren't worth much, so just let them suffer ? Even many of the socalled "middle class" have taken a big hit.Some medication is extremely expensive and can drain a person's wallet in no time, gas prices just create a greater strain.It seems that maybe you just like to here about suffering as you adhere to your own self-righteous views.Animal shelters suffer because of lack of donations, as do other charities which feel the pinch because people are worried about gas prices and paying their own bills.America is a BIG country and many areas don't have public transportation.Increased gas prices will be transferred from taxi's, buses, etc. onto those using them...unless they find a way to make them run on STUPID because then they can just plug 'em into you guys.

Fact: Adam and Eve knew that God created them and that he was friendly.

Fact: They could not and did not know everything, but did know that they would break relationship with God, who had done them no wrong and that was not right

Let me specifically address the above quoted issues as I'd imagine you feel it's your coup de grace on this matter.

"God was friendly". How friendly was he ? God was so friendly that when...he knew that a rebellious angel intent on destroying all living things and turning them against God..... decided to say exactly zippo on the subject to his dearly loved and newly created humans.They were easy prey.Now, ALL of the angels were privy to this information but apparently God felt that these innocent humans whose life, and all successive generations, hung in the balance, who unlike the angels,were not around when even the earth was created, once again decided he would say nothing and "See how it goes." Now, THAT is friendly and loving.

What loving parent would not warn their children ahead of time of ALL of the consequences ? Now, back to above quoted point...

Essentially, that statement is conjecture.It is a mere unproven presumption.Saying what they did was wrong does not make it wrong.The snake had not harmed them either.Was the snake actually the one who created them ? After all, Adam woke up and was there.Who did it ? Why wasn't he told ahead of time about an entity that sought to present another side of what they were told by another entity ? Each presented their case.The snake said they "Would BECOME LIKE God".Not that the relationship would end."Now we will all be Gods",she might have thought.Adam on the other hand apparently wasn't deceived and so he figured they would both die.But, despite the fact that he was willing to accept his fate, could he not have felt that what was pronounced upon them was wrong ? That maybe he felt that he wasn't really wrong, but merely that God said:"This is the way it is." Just because he believed God would carry out what he said he would do does not mean Adam felt it was right or even that his own actions were wrong.

For instance, a parent tells a child that if they take a cookie before dinner they will be punished.The child may very well believe they will be punished but not that their own action of taking the cookie was wrong.It is a conceptual understanding."Why can't I have the cookie ? " One might ask, "If the child knew the parents were always good to him would he not obey ? Why would he doubt ?" If the child took the cookie would you automatically assume the child didn't love the parent ? Adam and Eve weren't children but I argue that the lack of experience and information they lacked created confusion that distorted reality and made "truth" questionable.

RR certainly presents an interesting point to which some religions adhere. (I'm not sure... but I think the Bible Students still hold this view, which is a reflection of Charles Taze Russell's belief).Such a conclusion seeks to address the issue of fairness but in my opinion still falls far short as some time back I presented the case where God would not, in fact, have to let all living things suffer nor let the "Universal Issue" play out.Essentially, this would involve displaying the future to all of the spirit creatures as to how things WOULD play out if God would allow it.And since HE "cannot lie", no one could question the vision he put on display as to whether it was true or not.Having established that the future would be bad if he didn't step in, the Universal Issue was as good as answered and he could then just destroy all disobedient ones right there in the garden and make new humans.

Ultimately, I do not look at the story of Adam and Eve as one of truth, but as a concept.A morality tale if you will; and an attempted explanation of our current state.As a story it is full on many unknowable unknowns, contradictions, and ambiguities.And the God presented within it's framework, is in my opinion, worthy of neither worship nor respect.The current state of life on earth backs this up.But as an extension of the original title thread, and as was already discussed, the not yet conceived children of Adam and Eve (US) had a sentence pronounced upon them for actions for which they were not responsible and with which they had nothing to do.No amount of spin is going to justify that judgment.We will simply have to agree to disagree.

Calm down there Breaking Away... take a deep breath. That's better. Now, let's just talk some scientific facts OK? Ever heard of the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics? Systems and organisms (of which the human body is one) will break down over time unless an outside force acts upon it. Got it?

So at this point, they apparently didn't know what good and evil was,or as some say "Good and Bad",so they didn't know good from bad.Or was it just the extent of evil ? Therefore, could they know if eating the fruit was good and bad ? Because God said they shouldn't.And yet, they didn't know right from wrong, so the "test" was pretty unfair.They were made innocent and had never seen badness.However, if they DID have some idea of Good and Evil then they already possessed what the tree had to offer and the tree was essentially false in itself,as well as it's premise. And God's statement that "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil." presents a contradiction as well

However, the concept presents itself that eating from the tree of good and evil refers to the experience of good and evil.That is, one might say that they had never experienced evil and after eating they came to realize that they had been tricked and thus experienced evil and that's why God warned them because he never wanted them to experience it.But is that so ? For that to be true then same must also be true about Good.That their eyes were opened to what "good" was.But isn't everything God does good ? Surely, they experienced that before eating.Or if Good refers to the idea that now they came to realize that their actions were bad and obedience was good then did they really know good to begin with ? And if one doesn't really know good then how can they be fairly tested ?

Just one more thing:

The person who sins will die. The son will not bear the punishment for the father's iniquity, nor will the father bear the punishment for the son's iniquity;

He Who Controls the Spice Controls the Universe ! Oops, wrong story....

I just got home from work and noticed that this thread certainly took off.While some here obviously fully understand the point and premise of this thread it's also obvious that some who are so utterly infatuated with God, and the supposed eternal rewards they hope will be given them because of 'sticking up' for Him, that they can't get past the idea that he doesn't play fair at all ! So please let me 'splain it to ya...

"Who are we to question God ?!? ", "You think you know better ?", "God can change the rules if He feels like it, He's God for god's sakes !", "He can do what he wants ! ", "Might makes right ", "Leave Britney alone !!! "

You see, these statements defy all reason. Why ? Because according to the Bible: "God is LOVE " And love doesn't look for it's own interests.

If someone can read this thread all the way from page one to here, and more importantly read the Bible from page 1 to here, and still cannot see how God doesn't play fairly and changes the rules whenever he feels like it, I don't think there's much of anything I or anyone else can do.

When someone's mind is made up, practically no one can change it.However, if you can change the circumstances, or if the circumstances change by themselves, the person's perception might be altered and achieve the desired result of a changed mind.This is how sympathy can come about.A person may judge others harshly until they themselves experience the same circumstance, then their entire outlook can change.What does this have to do with anything ?

Put yourself in Adam and Eve's position.The mandate: Eat the fruit and the day you eat of it, you die.Very clear, is it not ?

How would you take it ? Is the fruit poisoned , is that why I'll die ? Well, a talking snake says: "You won't die, instead, you'll be like God ! " Eve is deceived and eats... and doesn't die ! " So she offers some to her husband.He's not deceived and thusly takes God at His word...that he WILL die; and in the day he eats of it.Take a moment and consider that.Eve believed Satan that she wouldn't die and ate.But as Adam looked into her eyes...she was VERY much alive ! According to the apostle Paul,Adam wasn't deceived, so he must have thought he would die.The day was not yet over.So whether Adam believed they would be executed or that they would simply die from the fruit, is really immaterial. Why ? Because it doesn't change things and this discussion is about God's role in all of this; a subject that makes some very uncomfortable.

There is a line that many believers are unwilling to cross.That God may, in fact, not be what He says he is.Or that the concept of God may not be what we think it is.

What seems to be overlooked by many when reading this account, is just how much information is kept from Adam and Eve.One would think that since the future of the ENTIRE HUMAN RACE is at stake, that God would do everything in His power to make available as much information as possible and to make sure everything is exceptionally clear.What IS left out, is the fact that NO mention of a FUTURE DESCENDANTS is EVER mentioned in regarding to eating the fruit.THREE people are involved God(1) who tells Adam(2), who apparently tells Eve(3)

Again,it's just them.Eve was not pregnant.No children had been produced and so there was NO reason to think ANYONE ELSE besides themselves would be involved, so let's not just make up what isn't mentioned in the BIble , 'kay ? Cause I've noticed that many apologists frequently like to take a ride on the Assumption-O-Rama when the facts get just a little too real.Again...

Hello Everyone,
I am really feeling depressed. My relationship with my JW mother is deteriorating rapidly. I can't even look at her sometimes. Yesterday at the gym I just waved and left.
I was raised in the "awful truth" and she will insist she did the best thing for us. I imagine she thought so.
My older sister who has been out for ages now is spouting off that she wants to study again. I know it's a load of BS because she won't change her lifestyle, but I still cautioned her about joining again.
My mother phoned me up the other day and asked me to PROMISE I wouldn't talk "negatively" about the the truth, to let my sister make her own mind up. I agree she should, but I won't stand by and watch a family member that I love get caught up in the JW mess. God knows what she's telling my sister. I my mother that I cannot accept a religion that puts a death sentence on anyone that's not one of them. Of course, she went ballistic, saying that only God can judge, etc., and if you lead your life morally according to the Bible, you should be okay. Then I said, well, then you don't have to be a JW or any religion for that matter as long as you live your life morally by the Bible? Of course she said no, you have to be a JW. My head hurts.
I have a cruise booked with my mother and sister in June. I paid for it already but I don't want to go. I really need your input on this. I feel like crying all the time and have even thought about just not being around anymore. Obviously, my mother can't wait for me to die in Armegeddon and I may lose my sister, the only relative I really connect to. I hate the way this has divided everyone.
I am so depressed.

In my opinion, the best thing right now is to relax as much as possible and to not interfere with your sisters plan.This will help to reduce some of the friction between you and your Mom and will show her that you are abiding by her wishes.You're sister is a big girl and since you guys were raised "in the troof" she's had plenty of time to decide.Besides, right now she's talking about a study, right ? Since you believe it's just BS, don't spin your wheels needlessly and waste your emotional energy.Who knows what will become of it ? Perhaps, when the time is right, your sister will ask you questions.If they want to go on a cruise with you then I think you should.You need to get away and perhaps the more relaxed atmosphere will open a casual discussion.But religious conversation is not really the purpose of the cruise anyway, just go to relax and enjoy yourself. I think you're getting worked up over "what if's " (your sister thinking about studying, "What if she does become a JW ? ", "What if..." ,etc) But you know what ? That's what your Mom is doing to."What if my daughter doesn't become a JW ? " What if she doesn't make it through Armageddon ?" ,etc." If your Mom is open to it... try to concentrate on what you do have in common; even if that just means enjoying each other's company free of religious discussion.If she brings things up during the course of association, and you feel it's not going to be anything productive, then just change the subject.Tell her you don't want it to come between you.That you've abided by her wishes not to interfere with your sisters "study" and that you would appreciate it if she didn't interfere with you not studying.Sounds fair, doesn't it ?

Awesome conclusion. Don't try this argument at home with JW loved ones.
But it plays well to those that understand.
Good points about not choosing the God of the OT as a friend, also.

Thanks OTWO.You're certainly right about not telling JW loved ones about this stuff as it could result in an attempted exorcism/stoning.Probably the exorcism first, and then the stoning to make sure "they" don't come back.

Thanks Darth Frosty.I would have to say that the account at Genesis 11:1-9 falls into this territory as well.After all, God directly intervenes in an activity he never even formally forbid.Oh, he did say to "fill the earth and subdue it", but he never mentioned how long that was supposed to take.Apparently someone lost the deadline papers.The main problem seemed to be that Nimrod was in opposition to God.Ordinarily, that attitude in itself might have been ignored but Nimrod was drawing lots of attention to himself through the building of a massive tower and this in turn drew everyones attention to the issue at hand, namely, that Nimrod essentially said: "let us make a name for ourselves." That declaration apparently pissed God off big time.

From the information presented in the Bible it seems rather evident that Nimrod was a tyrant and was also the founder of Nineveh which was referred to as, The city of Bloodshed.So bloodshed , both of animals and humans, is what he enjoyed.Not a nice person, to say the least.(Incidentally, God seems to enjoy this activity as well.So you'd think he'd at least buy the guy a beer before taking him into the corner and saying:"Look guy, I've got an image to maintain here, so it's nothing personal but I'm gonna have to break up the party.So shove off'.")But this is also the reason why people like the account so much; since God steps in and breaks up the activity.But ultimately, did it accomplish its purpose ? Yes and No.It certainly prevented them from completing the construction of structure that was said to be anywhere from 1,000 feet to over 1 mile high ! As a result of lack of communication they scattered throughout the earth.However, they ALSO took with them their various religions and attitudes.If such ones were of a murderous nature, then instead of concentrating them in one central location , it would cause them to fill the earth with such a spirit.It could be argued that it actually facilitated the spread of false beliefs and violence.And now hundreds of religions exist instead of the main one that was concentrated in Babel or Babylon.

One might argue that all of this was necessary for the protection of a select group through whom would be the appearance of the messiah.Nevertheless, this very same select group was also later responsbile for the death of the messiah.This resulted in their abandoment by God and ultimate destruction as a favored people.Obviously, mankind, both as a society and as individuals, just doesn't seem to have what it takes to please God.The first man ever made , Adam, "screwed up", so he killed him..The first woman ever, "screwed up", so he killed her..One of the top angels (and his buddies)screwed up, so he's gonna kill all of them.The preflood descendants of Adam screwed up, so he killed them....and kicked in the innocent animals as a bonus. God's chosen people screwed up, so he killed them.The world today is in opposition to God as well, so he's gonna kill all of us.Does this guy create anything he doesn't get pissed off at and kill ? Might I put a note in the suggestion box to stop making stuff that screws up so you don't have to kill it ? Or how about just not acting like a dick and having impossible standards ? Which brings us back to the original thread about being judged unfairly.

BTL has not failed to understand the premise of this thread as the premise of this thread is clearly stated in the title.Any God, of any form whatsoever, that arbitrarily changes the rules when he knows he's about to lose or "he's been had", is worthy neither of worship nor respect, in any form.

Such actions would never be tolerated by an imperfect human (who consequently has greater excuse for said behavior) and would subsequently be punished.Being the biggest kid on the block who is stronger than others does not give him the right to do as he pleases without regard to others or the consequences for such actions.I believe the term is "bully" or "asshole".
