Hehe Funny to see the contortions and contradictions needed by those of faith to make their worldview seem less infantile. Christians are idiots, and arrogant little liars.

The Portable Atheist - Christopher Hitchens
by portcontrol7 ini'm slowly making my way through this strangely titled (portable isn't the first adjective that comes to mind when looking at this book) tome of atheistic thought throughout the past 2 millennia.
most of the samplings come from the past few centuries, but it begins with some writings by lucretius and omar khayyam.
this book is a delight and a must have for an atheist who wishes to see the progression of atheism over the centuries, as well as some of the most damning polemics against the illogic of faith.

Why all Christianity is repulsive to me
by portcontrol7 inthe crux of all christianity is that an omnipotent and loving god sent a human sacrifice to atone for the sins of a (fictional) man, knowing full well that he would be horribly tortured and mocked.
if that god existed (which i'm grateful he/she/it doesn't), i would be proud to oppose it.
there are 3 main types of christians in my opinion:.

"This is true and I realize it about myself, and once you comprehend your own staggering ignorance, once you realize that you know nearly nothing, you will not be so quick to point out what you think is stupidity in others.
BTS"
Recognizing one's ignorance is a far cry from stupidity. Stupidity is reading the bible along with whatever teaching aids are published to "accompany" it and seeing absolutely no problems with the logic. I have no problem with pointing out stupidity, but to mock someone's ignorance is just, well, stupid.
Arguing for the logic and reason of the scriptures is and oxymoron, faith is the antithesis of these principles. If Christians would just admit this I'd have a measure of respect for them.

I'd have to agree to an extent with Burn the Ships regarding God is Not Great, although I found it extremely entertaining. Hitchens is a contrarian. If you want a more precise and cutting polemical essays on religion you'd do better to read the Portable Atheist by far. Particularly fun for me was to notice how so many of the arguments made by some of the leading figures in the "new atheism" are really old arguments that have yet to be refuted by the religious, and they are often more eloquently stated in that compendium.

Book: Misquoting Jesus (The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why)
by Quotes inmy brother gave me this book for my birthday.
the author is bart d. ehrman, who chairs religious studies at the university of north carolina, chapel hill.
it is a simple introduction to the topic of textual criticism (a branch of literary criticism that is concerned with the identification and removal of transcription errors in the texts of manuscripts) of the new testament.

This is one I've had my eye on for awhile now. Now that the Border's near my home is offering 75 percent sales I think I'll pick it up.

"Hi, I am The Stupid.
I wish you had more categories, but pleased to meet you. But I know you won't hang around for long.
BTS"
Nice to meet you as well BTS. Understanding one's stupidity is the first step in remedying it. Your candor is refreshing, and I take it at face value. You see, for all my vitriol toward Christianity, I merely pity the category you belong to.

"Well portcontrol07, if you hate Christianity that much, that puts you at odds with 75%+ of the population, you aren't much different than you were as a JW. That would make you an outcast still."
Well Junction, that's quite alright with me. I suppose I'm used to it then! But you raise an important point, namely that Church of Kingdom Hall serves a strong social function and gives people a much needed sense of "belonging". That makes the practice of disfellowshipping all the more painful. I've even known some witnesses that strived to become reinstated if only to be able to communicate with those friends who so dearly love them. Revolting.
"There is a lot stuff that can't be definitively proved (like the existence of Jesus), and stuff that doesn't make logical sense (like the ransom). But the tenets of Christ as written in the Gospels, are mostly sound and make for good living. Many Christians follow them and are wonderful people. Even if they are as made up as Disney, until it all can be definitively DISproven, let's make room for them and never forget the kindness that many Christians show. Don't let the bad apples ruin your perception of the rest of them.
BTW-The same can be said for other religious points of view such as Islam, Judaism, etc."Mostly sound and makes for good living eh? Again, the crux of the Christ story is what I find so abhorrent. Whether or not a particular Christian is a "wonderful person" or not doesn't really concern me. I can find decent people of many false belief systems, decent by my standards of course, and of course that lends zero credibility to their arguments about the nature of the universe and our place within it.
As far as Christianity proofs are concerned, I'm sure you know who the burden lies with. In my examination of the bible I have found plenty of proof that it was written by people with a bronze age morality, and to think that we base our morality upon the bible is thankfully false. I'm not judging the writers according to the standards of more progressive morality, but again I'm thankful that we don't live in a society with the liberty of the Taliban.
I used to argue with members of the "truth" based upon particular problems I found with the Watchtowers shady biography, probably because I was so bitter with the hypocrites I was raised around. In the end what I remember most about my youth in the Kingdom Hall was my inability to have any kind of loving feeling toward Jehovah, he seemed like a monster then and he seems like a monster now. Only now I'm no longer afraid of his vengeance, and have found that life is not watched over by a cosmic dictator. Reality is so much more wondrous than the barbaric and crude creationist vision of our vibrantly living planet.

3. The Selfish and Fearful
These groups are not necessarily mutually exclusive.
Anyone who could serve such a God isn't anyone I'd want to be around. Leaving the Jehovah's Witnesses in order to find some other version of this putrid and ignorant death cult is idiotic. -

No Lisa, it's at least a year or two old. It was released not long after "God is Not Great". I've had it for several months, and like I said I'm taking it slow. I'm acquainting myself with each of the authors before tackling the samples, letters, or essays Hitchens included in this volume. It's the most bang for my atheist buck I've found.

If anyone else has read this, please share your thoughts. If you haven't read this, I highly suggest it to both atheists and believers.

Chocolate News
by leavingwt inhas anyone seen david alan grier's new show, chocolate news?.

it's the most irreverent thing i've seen on comedy central since dave chappelle.

I watched the first 2 episodes and that was enough for me. Any comparison with the Chappelle Show is purely racial, and David Alan Grier isn't half as funny as Dave, and about 10 times more annoying. The whole premise of the show I find annoying, and it's just furthering the bullshit racial division in America.
