so.. i went to the jewish temple near where i live and learned something interesting a few days ago.. i'm sure it has been discussed on here before but i was wondering how the jws explain it.

I think it's primarily a calendar issue, and (for once) the JW's are following the tradition of Christian churches -- they celebrate Easter based on some cycle of the moon which I will not pretend to understand. The Jewish celebration of Passover depends on the Jewish calendar.
I've left out the details because I don't fully get them, but that's the gist.
i was born into the religion and 3 years ago on april 1st decided to move out i haven't gone since.
i moved out live on my own decided to go to college.
i remember the meetings it was never encouraged to go to college why i ask.
Hey, I'm surprised they even suggest education beyond the 8th Grade.
Everyone else has already answered your question, but to put it bluntly, they don't want you to get too smart and risk further exposure to "the world." Plus there's very little time left to do anything but witnessing, etc. etc.
It took me ten years to get my college degree -- we mixed in some "life experiences" in that time frame, which is why it took so long -- but aside from the birth of my kids nothing has ever made me prouder.

I buy the dude. He does make a good point about indie filmmaking, and at least was generous enough to provide links and permission to use his quotes. At least he was fair about it with his explanations and didn't do the typical JW F-you response.

If by "persecution" he means "US courts deciding that JW elders must testify about known pedophiles," then brother's right on. Hey, they're right about something!

I agree with most of what you said, but in my area JW's are actually quite generous towards one another. Several homes for down and out JW's have been put up by cong members - OF COURSE it the society were to get involved they would likely squash that with a plethora of "cautions" and kill the spirit.

There are also many thousands of people who are in a much worse situation of being totally cut off from their family. Their only hope is that their relatives will leave Jehovah's Witnesses or they will change their policies or the religion will collapse. He did these victims a great disservice by making a proJW film that glosses over these facts.
You know what I wish? That somebody would buy the film rights to "Crisis Of Conscience" or Joy Castro's "Truth Book". I'm a bit short on that kind of capital at the moment.
this just went up on freeminds regarding the jw elders in southern california, who have so far been stonewalling about their private conversations with accused jw child molester gilbert simental... the judge in the case has issued an order for them to testify:.
(the judge) said... "it was more like a third-party investigation into immoral conduct."...
the judge said, the elders' duty was to determine guilt and to protect the congregation, not to keep the communications under wraps.
This could be a watermark ruling ; forcing elders to have to come to court and publicly testify about what they know in particular child abuse cases within their congregations . The Watchtower society hates publicity , as evidenced by their out of court settlements in the shadows of the dark alleys with 16 witness abuse victims in 2007 ! So being forced to testify will be more bad publicity for the witnesses in the public forum. It will also be interesting as well to see if the "mother " governing body supports these elders in their testimony - or throws them under the bus as they do elders calling from phone booths about child abuse ! I think they must have known this was coming. Wasn't there some GB guy giving out new light recently, about the possibility that JWs will have to geographically isolate themselves, and that the "King of the North" might soon be attacking them?
The US justice and media system look awfully damn north to me. Well, northern hemisphere, at least.
All you have to know is that no matter what the end result is, the WTS will find some way to use that result as justification for their beliefs. If they win, they'll say they've been victorious, and they are therefore the truth. If they lose, they'll say the system hates them, and they are therefore the truth.
It sure would be nice to see them felled by something they didn't see coming or didn't plan for.

You know, the filmmaker always struck me as being an okay guy. I understand his point as a documentarian. But his experience was far more benign than mine was, I guess. When I was a JW, though, they absolutely put down other religions, or at least considered them all Satanic. I don't think that exhibits a willingness to co-exist. I know there are other religions like that as well. And I'm not a member of their churches either.
The political/social achievements of JW's in the courtroom have long been obscured by their shadowy practices away from the public view. But they won't be out of that view for very much longer.

Since JW's LOVE to go to the Supreme Court, it would be nice if this went up also. Just to get some bad press for the JW's and show America and the rest of the world, how horrible and cultish the JW's are.
I still can't understand, how the Scientoligists can get such bad press, and people know that they are all wackos, but we can't break the barrier, and have the JW's declared wackos.
This is different from the flag-salute thing that they went to the Supreme Court for in the first place. I think they realize they can't let it get that far and maintain their public standing. They'll drop it before the world starts watching.
Either that or turn on the persecution sign and claim the American justice system is the "king of the North" (although they've bailed 'em out before).
