[p]1. "I found it interesting that even though christians ALWAYS claim a moral highground over atheists, mostly due to their stance on things like abortion, cheating".[/p] [p]2. "Atheist have a clear, definite answer: Yes, it is always wrong to burn people to death, no matter what the circumstances."[/p] [p]I'm unclear why you think all athiests think and feel the same way about these things.[/p] [p]1. Not all athiests are pro-choice, and I have no clue what you think athiests think about cheating. I think most people in general are not okay with it. You think athiests want to be cheated on or don't mind?[/p] [p]2. Same problem, not all athiests think definitively that burning a person to death is always wrong.[/p] [p]I am what I consider an open-minded agnostic, but basically an athiest. Although I tend not to believe in God, I feel that saying absolutely there is one or there isn't one is close-minded. My husband is an athiest and I can tell ya, neither of us is okay with cheating on one another; and I happen to think that there are crimes against humanity that would be deserving of death by fire (ex. ordering genocide or the attempting genocide).[/p]

Is it wrong to burn people to death?
by DoomVoyager ini'm an avid reader of steve wells' blog on religion and atheism.
this article discusses the hebrew god (we all know him as joe hoobie) and his propensity for burning people to death.

Einstein on God....Rare Letter At Auction
by hillary_step inthis rare letter gives us a good insight into the 'religious' views of einstein, oft quoted by mainstream religionists in the hope that they could glean from him some allusion to his belief in a conventional 'god'.. why his views on god or even the rear end of marilyn monroe would be of much interest has always eluded me, but it is just as well that we all know that einstein did not believe in any god, at least not in the conventional sense, so that defenders of the bible and a god free of sociopathy are not tempted to haul his einsteined majesty before the court of debate again.. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/articlenews/story/ctvnews/20080513/einstein_letter_080513/20080513?hub=scitech.

Lewis Black: Red, White And Scr*wed
by chickpea infrom curtain up to curtain down he is masterful in relating his perceptions including politics and religion and the nature of living in the residue of both.
he rails against inanity of the original venue ( the john f kennedy center for the performing arts) disallowing the use of its name in publicity, as mr. black's use of the f-bomb is prodigious and not in keeping with the character of the facility... he delicately points out the acutal kennedy for whom it was named was prodigious in the activity the f-bomb pertains to!.
evicerates cheney just because he can..... hunting quail?

Dumb and Dumber, Office Space, Shawshank Redemption, Scary Movie, all of the Indiana Jones movies, Aliens, Terminator 1 & 2, The Green Mile, The Little Mermaid, and Friday. Strangely enough Crash is my 2nd favorite movie of all time but I wouldn't want to watch it over and over again. It's pretty deep and needs to be viewed only every once in a while.

Kensei- LOL.. I agree that most Blacks loved the Clinton era. Although he wasn't the best husband, I appreciated him as a President in many respects. Still, Hillary is not my first choice. My primary draw to Obama is his stance on healthcare. I, personally, want the country headed towards a nationally funded healthcare program SIMILAR (but not identical) to Canada and England. He is the closest front-runner to my ideal. As for my comment about Blacks liking Clinton best I posted that just to counter someone's claim earlier that Obama appeals to Blacks SIMPLY because he is Black. If he were a Republican and Black I doubt this claim would have been made besides the fact that some polls show that Clinton (a White lady) appeals to more Blacks than Obama.

Are Witnesses really all that different today, from other religions?
by free2beme ini know that in the early days of the witnesses, they really stood out from other religions and shocked people with their thoughts.
this was a different time, a more conservative time, in which new ideas were often seen as trouble in a world that seemed to be doing just fine the way it was.
today though, despite their desire to seem different.

I agree JWs aren't drastically different from others. One area is that they consistently go door-to-door. Only the Mormons could really compare but to a lesser degree. OnTheWayOut- "No organization [religion?] asks you to shun your grandchild and certainly to never eat with him." Uh.. that's not really true. The Amish practice shunning to a greater extent than JWs. Also, many Catholics will not associate with Catholic's that have been excommunicated. Muslims would not associate with a Muslim who said he or she was gay. Almost all religions recommending shunning in some fashion if a person commits CERTAIN "sins".

Do you let your dub relatives watch your kids?
by avishai inthis was mentioned on another topic but it needs it's own thread.
ok, i'm gonna say it again.
if your relatives will not speak to you.... do not let them have any contact with your children, period.

Carla- I have been df'ed for 7 years and was a very prolific poster on this for years so I know many of the stories. I'm not a "newbie" in the traditional sense. Still, everyone is not the same. My parents and I have a strained relationship and I made it more strained by moving out of state. My mother is eager to become a grandmother and she's never been pushy to me about returning. I've already told her my rules about contact with my future children and she has agreed. She will not take the chance of not seeing her grandkids, especially since I am the only married child and the most likely to have any kids soon. Also, like I said before.. if she did pray with them or read them Bible stories, it wouldn't be the end of the world. My experience as a JW was not horrifying. This is a bit dramatic, "I don't care what you have to give up to protect your kids from the potential physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental abuse the jw's hand out on a daily basis, never ever leave a child with a jw. Sometimes you have to put your career, a fun night out, and even your life on pause to protect your children. No babysitter is worth the very life of my child." I did not have ANY of these experiences as a child of a JW couple. My parents were NEVER abusive in ANY fashion. I'm sorry that you have gone through that. I was raised by my parents, not you. They in no way abused me and I have no reason to believe they will be less of a grandparent because they are JWs. Also, I believe in the benefit of the doubt. If my kids come home asking about Jehovah I'll sit them down and explain things, then I will give my parents an ultimatum. I used to be a JW, apparently some around hear have forgotten how they used to feel about the df'ed and da'ed. My parents are the victims of a form of brainwashing and although they haven't treated me the best way in the past few years, I DO understand.. I used to shun people too.. even close friends. So, if they want to see my kids, I think it will benefit all parties involved. My in-laws are Muslim and they are very good parents. I'd let them watch my kids too.
