  Thanks for posting that Daily Show clip, Bizzy. I hadn't really stopped to think much about the "small town values" angle the Republicans are pushing. It was quite interesting to see what happened when (a) their intrepid reporters interviewed people to find out specifically what "small town values" are, and (b) what happened when they tried to be friendly-small-town like with the Republicans running the various break-out meetings. From watching the video, it became clear that the (R) party was just sloganeering.

  FWIW, years ago a client said to me that choosing between candidates, for him, was comparable to choosing between broccoli and cabbage:

  I don't like either one

  Actually this political season is different. While it's true there is still a considerable amount of apathy and cynicism during this election cycle, this campaign is way better and more interesting than the Bush-Kerry "boring-boring" campaign of 2004.

  Supporters of both sides are fired up and really believe in their candidates this time around. There's a pretty clear choice in the American presidential race, and for most people the comparison is more like a choice between a juicy steak (their side) and a celery stick (the other side).

  some of you remember about 9 months ago when my son's fanatic witness mother ( my ex ) tried e-mailing him at college to preach to him of the evils of higher learning.

  he stood up for himself admirably.

  she left him alone - but she's back at it again like a bad dream that just won't quit !

  Your ex's non-private condemnation of your son leaves me speechless. Even when I was a JW, if I disagreed with someone I never told them that I thought they were on the Devil's side.

  JW's wonder why so many people hate them. No wonder, when not only their leadership but their members are full of foul language and foul ideas about non-members.

  This kind of dub-speak is excellent innoculation for people like your son's girlfriend, who can only look on in awestruck amazement at the absolute cruelty and narrow-mindedness of JW's and their beliefs.

  The world is a better place because of helpful people like your son and his girlfriend. I wish them all the best.

  firstly my thoughts are with anyone who lost loved ones in this terrible trajedy.

  the other point i wanted to make was i remember the witnesses here only seeming to be bothered about 'the brothers' in new york at this time.

  made me feel sick !

  Participation in politics DOES matter in a society like ours. Even if the candidate you vote for doesn't win, you still had a voice in the selection of your representative.

  The system isn't perfect. Of course government is influenced by a lot of factors the voters have little or no control over.

  But for those who believe "not voting" is somehow noble, please don't complain about anything that happens in your city, state or national government. If you don't even care enough to cast a vote to try to sway things when you have the chance, why should anyone listen to any complaint you have about how our society is governed?

  guess i'll be the first one to do an (inevitable) thread about 9-11. hard to believe it's been 7 years already.

  i was at work when one of my co-workers came up and told me that a plane had hit the world trade center.

  i thought it was awful, but i figured it was a small single engine plane that maybe lost its way in the fog.

  I was driving to work.

  I spent much of that day posting on and reading this discussion board. It was really comforting to have a place to share the experience with Americans and concerned fellow posters from around the world.
