They attempt to obscure the fact that while they never donate their won blood, they make use of 'fractions' of blood donated by others (as they do in the acceptance of Factor VIII); why would a true Christian reap where (s)he's not sown?

LDH is making quite a powerful point: the same Christian Congregation claiming that the love amongst themselves is the true mark of their discipleship of Jesus Christ, who are organised to accomplish God's true work on earth, isn't organised to help the most needy amongst them. This is the point, and it's powerful.

i don't know a lot about joel osteen.
i've never read his books or watched him on tv but i was struck with how positive he is and how upbeat and encouraging his message is.

Always interesting to hear Joel Osteen preach. His God is a wonderful god: helps at the airport to upgrade his seat to first class, finds him a parking space when everywhere looks occupied, y'know, things like that. His smile takes in the unwary, the happiness he exudes, and the noted positive attitude infect you with ease; and there's the mantra: "This is my bible... " His is a different brand of Christianity, it appears harmless, and unthreatening.

an elder i know who has a good job in it has already lost several thousand dollars of his 401k.
it's hard to know whether to sell.. cash is king.. .

It's ravaged my folio. I'd exited some positions before things started to cool. For the rest, I'm now in for the very long haul. And I'm lurking, waiting for prices to drop low enough to be able to take some juicy positions. In the mean time, I'm keeping with the general principle of buying small volumes (very small) in apparently fundamentally sound stocks; of course, no one knows what's fundamentally sound again in this market with the last few giants hitting the ground...

university-educated congregations?
by ID Crisis indoes anyone know of (eg central city) congregations that have many people with uni degrees and/or professional careers/occupations?
if yes, can you comment on how the anti-university talks are delivered in these congregations?

Interesting. One of the rather exciting congregations I've been in was one located near a university. More than 80% of the JWs and other friends were full-time students at the university nearby. The congregation was usually be in a state of sth like flux, with a student staying for 4 or 5 years, and a few proceeding for advanced degrees (Masters and Phds) at the university. It was always exciting to be there, and the level of contributions (comments, that is) during the meetings was solid, intellectual, and sharp. The rather less educated elders appeared to be more reasonable in handling judicial matters; they were however less accomodating in dealing with themselves; the power struggle was legendary.
The brother/sister students were an exciting bunch; there's always stuff going on. Disfellowshippings were painful and tough; there were two or three that were well-known in those days; more than a few students tooks sides, ignoring the shunning rule, discretely keeping up some form of communication with the disfellowshipped. Reinstatements were quite swift. At least two of the JW students in those days had worldy love interests who attended meetings; there were no widespread talk of misconduct (make of that what you will...) but it was clear this was no ordinary congregation. WT studies were exciting, with interesting spins to study article points; this necessitated two/three of the more intellectual MSs conducting the WT studies.
Much of what's happened since then have made nonsense of what was an interesting group. It couldn't smply have been that once torn away from that intellectual environment, many of these regressed to being "regular" JWs, or that their new congregations got to them. For many, the university was a hurdle to scale, a temptation to resist, until they returned to the "real" JW world.
