Speaking only for myself, this was not an issue in any of the Kingdom Halls with which I was associated. However, I recall reading that this IS an issue in Israel's "Holy Land." It seems that every year, Israeli police have to deal with people - mainly foreign tourists - who "snap" in a psychological sense. They undergo a sort of mental breakdown [or in clinical terms, an "acute psychotic episode"]. These poor souls then have to be institutionalized for their own good. I read that men often believe they are either Jesus Christ or John the Baptist, while women suddenly feel that they are one of the Marys named in the Bible. This is a big problem in cities such as Jerusalem or Bethlehem. It happens routinely; the Israeli cops have to deal with it on a regular basis and may even have a specialized "bureau" to handle cases of foreigners found wandering around and speaking incoherently. The theory for why this happens holds that people who are already pre-disposed to such delusions are overwhelmed when they visit the "Holy Land". They are totally overcome by the historical "weight" - the historical gravitas of these places. The Holy Land is the most holy for the followers of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Actually,I think that it would be interesting to study this phenomenon more carefully. although it is a sad phenomenon. It would be interesting to see where these people come from and what religion they adhere to. It would be interesting to see which Bible character they identify with. And in cross-cultural terms, it would be interesting to see if this phenomenon has been observed and documented in other parts of the world deemed to be "sacred ground." For example, would a person claiming to attain "Buddha-hood" in the Lord Buddha's supposed birthplace be considered as divine in some sense, or as suffering from psychopathology?

Freydi - The biblical legend of Sodom and Gomorrah has NOTHING to do with homosexuality. The "sin" of Sodom and its adjacent towns was NOT homosexualtity, but rather inhospitality. In biblical times, inhospitality was considered the most egregious of sins, probably the worst sin imaginabIe. If you think about the harshness of the conditions, you will come to realize why inhospitality was viewed as being so hateful. The conduct of the residents of Sodom was hateful becuase they were intefering in Lot's role as a host. He himself says: "These people are my guests!" As host, Lot had a crucial role to play; he had all-important duties and obligations to carry out. And the residents were preventing him from doing what he knew he had to do. In Lot's day, a host's obligation to his guests "trumped" everything else, even familial relations. As I remember, didn't Lot offer his daughter? But if the residents were homosexuals, why offer a daughter? In my opinion, this story shows two things: It shows in what high esteem the notion of hospitality was held in that society, and how low the status of women was in that same society.
When considering Old Testament taboos, any reading of the O.T.'s numerous laws will show that eating frogs and cutting one's hair are on par with the injunctions against "men lying with men." But why don't you we see people up in arms and protesting against French restaurants or barber shops? I mean, why selectively pick and choose among "sins"?
In the New Testament, Jesus instructs his disciples on what to do if they are not well received or are mistreated in any way; he tells them to wipe the dust of the offending town off their sandals. He tells them that in the end days, things will go better for the residents of Sodom than for those in the towns that reject the disciples message. And just what did Jesus have to say abouty homosexuality? Nothing, nothing at all. However, he DID have something to say about adulterers. It's strange how adultery is not a criminal offense. Lucky thing for a lot of people.

Anti-Christ: Although the term "propaganda" often has negative connotations, it is not, in essence, a negative word. In etymology, it is not derived from politics, but rather from religion. The word "propaganda" is a Latin gerund found in the expression Congregatio de Propagando Fide, that is to say the Congregation for Spreading [Propagating] Faith. In other words, "propaganda" lierally means "spreading" or "propagating". In its widest [and most neutral] sense, it refers to the spreading or propagating of information so as to influence people's ideas and thinking. In other words, it is something that everyone does at one time or another. Although "propaganda" - the organized and systematic propagating of information to sway public opinion and thought - has, in fact, been horribly abused by political and religious leaders throughout history, the term need not necessarily be understood in a negative sense.
JCanon [his name = "Jesus Christ Anonymous"] is an interesting character indeed. Even though he has been posting on this board for five or more years, I still do not know what to make of him. He's obviously of average - or even above average - intelligence. He also displays wit and an understanding of irony. He can take a joke, even if the joke's on him. I have no training in psychology, so I am in no position to "diagnose" him. He may be a delusional paranoic, or he may be a supreme, merry prankster a sort of jester who posts on this board for the fun and sport of it. Maybe he posts simply in order to "yank our chains" as the colloquial American expression goes. I would be curious to know what he does for a day job. I would also like to know if he takes seriously any of the stuff that he posts;my guess would be that he does not.

Perhaps the seemingly hallucinatory aspect of John's Apocalypse is due to its Gnostic nature. In any case, the text is highly symbolic and can be interptreted in many ways.
i heard one recently from a paramedic.
he said he uses the line "take off all your clothes, lay down on the stretcher and do everything the nice paramedic tells you".
